In the top 10 of everybody's favourite Northern Soul classics.

When I was a young lad, a naïve-sponge discovering new Soul sounds to feast upon, circa 1972, I heard this Philadelphia juggernaut of vocal-group Northern Soul...for the very first time.

Wow, I thought I'd just witnessed the greatest record ever made...

Earl Young's crashing drum rolls collide with the most spectacular barrage of "vibes" ever recorded. A starting pistol for this recently formed quintet to launch an onslaught of silky smooth Soulful vocals.

I was totally blown away by its unforgiving power, whilst still retaining flawless harmony, peppered with searing crescendos. Then of course there's the Mike Terry burping Baritone Saxophone constantly prompting more and more energy from the guys. Another life-changing moment, that elevated Northern Soul into the most important influence in my life.. more important than football, fishing and flirting... I was more focused on hearing more music like this, than anything else in my life.

I was 3 years later, fortunate enough to get a birds-eye view of these guys when Mary Chapman booked the "Trammps" to appear at Cleethorpes Pier and I was the next DJ on after they finished. The place was jam-packed, a record attendance and Earl Young, Stanley & Harold Wade, John Hart etc. were brilliant.. but not once did they go back and sing any of their Volcanos recordings.

You can guess what I had lined up for my first record. With the volume pushed to the max "The Laws Of Love" exploded, the moment the encore subsided. The Pier erupted in gymnastic mayhem, the vista is still one of the most-treasured memories of my youth..

There could not be a more obvious turntable drop, nor a more potent intro to ignite the touchpaper for one of Cleethorpes Pier's greatest evenings ever..
