The RARE and mysterious Georgia label Delphi again throws up one of it's rarities Delphi 0012 reveals itself to me for the first time and again it's great Northern Soul not once but twice over!.
Crafted like the other known Delphi recordings, in the tradition of the 60's Carolinas dance Soul that influenced Georgia based blue-eyed bands. So much so, it crossed the border south infiltrating the clubs & dances of the time.
Delphi a record label I've personnaly been enamoured with since my very early days of USA diggin' for vinyl. When I first encountered this previously unknown to me label, finding The Prophets - Talk Don't Bother Me - Delphi 007 and just days later The Pallbearers - Delphi 000011. Both really great tunes, the search was on for more Delphi 45's. Now 40 years on, I've still not encountered every 45 Delphi released, there are so many numbers that remain undocumented. I've never had a copy of Delphi 0012 before today. "The Vistas" was completely unknown to me, so you can imagine my trepidation, as I dropped the arm on "Thank You John" a "Willie Tee" favourite of mine...
Roy Smith's Delphi label has never disappointed me, consistently giving up solid Northern Soul. "Thank you John" the first side I played, is a highly accomplished street-level vocal group take, complimenting the very spirit of Willie Turbinton's original. I was well pleased with this find, my Delphi love-affair even 40 years later, again rewarded my constant interest in this insanely elusive label, with a damn good tune.
So with even more apprehension, I cued up the other side with the enticing title of "Keep On Keeping On" staring back at me. Fingers crossed my hopes were high, for this Oxford Nights clone to deliver something as good as all the other Delphi recordings I'd drooled over for over 4 decades.
Exhilaration, adrenaline rushes my veins, another great Delphi tune belts, flooding my ear-canal with typically Carolina burping horns cradling finely tuned blue-eyed harmonies, driven by rhythmic drum pulses and trumpet blast punctuating the process. A slow down part, a speedy pick up a bubbling saxophone enriches the arrangement. Vocally flawless throughout... DELPHI delivers again..
What about all the other missing numbers..?? Delphi perhaps more than any other 60's Northern Soul label still holds real mystique and possible treasures in its yet to be fully heard or documented catalogue.
For me personally this is a FIND! Can't wait for my next Delphi adventure..
Condition ReportTwo clean labels, visually the playing surface has light surface marks vg+, but the replay is much better as you can his from the more than excellent soundfile..
