In many leaned Soul scholars opinions "I'll Go Crazy" is the most important Deep Soul 45 on Planet Earth.. constructed by Kansas City's greatest Soul prospect, who had his life cut short when he was inexplicably murdered at his place of work by a hit man. This his 2nd. 45 for Decca produced in Memphis by Willie Mitchell. Itnever got to market, as it was immediately withdrawn upon the news that Tony Ashley was dead.

Tony was working in a tailor shop, everybody was pleased he'd broken through by being produced by the legendary Willie Mitchell, big things were expected to happen for him. Apparently the hit man, walked into Tony's place of work ask for him by name, when Tony made himself known, he was shot dead inside the "President Hat Shop" on December 15, 1969. A massive loss to his many friends, to Soul music and for the unique make-up of the Kansas City Music scene

Listen to "I'll Go Crazy" and you'll hear why many people considered he would have become Willie Mitchell's prodigy, a place soon to be filled by Al Greene. Today in Kansas City, the mystery of Tony Ashley's murder is still a topic of discussion. A film of his tragic life has been on the table for making this last 18 months, the outline for a script is already in place. Let's hope this accomplish Soul Man's story will eventually hit the silver screen.
