The Detroit bandleading legend himself, revealing his mastery of the piano whilst demolishing the entire structure of Barrett Strong’s first Motown hit “Money ( That’s What I Want )” ....radically rebuilding it, as the great man saw fit.

A crazed statement, of this 21 year old’s gifts, as he gives up one of the greatest Rock & Roll performances that very few people have ever heard.

Wow! What a remake..

“Popcorn and His Mohawks” send strong signals of his genius to Berry Gordy, who afforded “Popcorn” a total of 3 45 releases. With piano prowess also featuring on some of the label’s biggest hits. “Shop Around” “Please Mr. Postman” etc. With his fellow “Mohawk” James Jamerson later becoming a defining component of The Motown Sound.

Unfortunately “Popcorn’s” tenure at Motown sadly only lasted a little more than 2 years, after a falling out between Popcorn & Berry. Wylie left Motown to join Epic, later coming back to the Motor City street-level music scene to write, produce, arrange and sing more truly great Detroit indies than arguably anyone else. His legacy to Northern Soul is unparalleled, one can only wonder what course Popcorn’s career would have taken had he remained at Motown through their Golden years.

Maybe, we could also surmise that without Popcorn leaving Motown, all those Northern Soul classics on small labels may never have been made.

Here is Richard Popcorn’s rarest Motown in “Impossibly” clean condition
