Description

This classics first incarnation!

From a Detroit warm spring, to the steaming hot cauldron of the Twisted Wheel dancefloor. Here's the much-loved "Big Apple" attempt to rival the sound of Motown and The Four Tops' in August 1967.

"Washed Ashore (On A Lonely Island In The Sea) showcases The Platters finest NS offering inspired and crafted by Detroit's most gifted writer / producers. Musicor employed the services of Richard Popcorn Wylie to produce this winner; arranged and conducted by Sonny Sanders. Penned by Richard Wylie & Tony Hester one of the most prolifically consistent Motor City pairing of street-level 60s soul ever to be matched together. In an attempt by Musicor to emulate the runaway success by Four Tops were enjoying at Motown. With their oversized productions, big vocal dance tunes. Surely The Platters under the right supervision could grab some of that action.

The Platters were the perfect counter-reaction employed by this successful East Coast company following the trends of soul music. "Washed Ashore" was a genuine soul-masterpiece that became a minor hit in the USA, but in the UK was passed over by the radio stations before being recued by the MOD club DJs and elevated to anthem status, where has remained for the last 58 years.

Starting life as a "Twisted Wheel" "King Mojo" "Dungeon" "Beachcomber" etc. favourite, now heralded as a record nobody has ever grown weary of hearing, always a welcome drop, as the magic of the Motor City influences flood your space!

To own it in its rarest form, we think is something very special indeed.

Look, listen to those brilliant lyrics delivered by the East Coast's most powerful soul vocalists...
then prepare to fall in love all over again.

I vividly remember in the late 1994 at a Manchester Ritz "Rarest Of The Rare" allnighter, where every full of adrenaline DJ glowing with puffed up egos, trying their best to upstage the previous and next DJ's with their "rarest" of the rare. When Richard Searling in the midst of his parade of the "rarest" set dropped Platters - Washed Ashore (On A Lonely Island In The Sea) - now that is CLASS!

The place exploded with ecstasy, lifted by one of the greatest Northern Soul creations ever made...

Condition Report

Two clean green and white promo labels, an ultra fine ballpoint X on the a-side label, is this beauty's only freckle, strong gloss on the vinyl, some mild surface surface hairlines visible when angled in the light, as you can hear it plays clean and true. Still beautifully presented in the iconic Stateside sleeve.
