I do remember in my youth I considered this Chicago Northern Soul stomping "Ain't That Something" an overlooked possible dancefloor monster. With Ted Daniels injecting that meaty Darrow Fletcher type motivating horns. Tinkling piano (very Darrow). Paul Smith similar in vocal style rolls out, archetypical Chicago Northern Soul, subtle girl group back-up is overwhelmed by those horns, so I never bothered taking miuch notice of the slower flipside..

To my eternal shame, "I'll Run" is today universally heralded as one of the greatest big-production examples of Beat-Ballad-Heaven it is possible to hear. I've catapulted myself back to the mid-seventies to listen to "Ain't That Something " once again... I wasn't wrong it is a meaty serving of Chicago Northern Soul, a beast of a tune!

Trying not to wince I'm gonna flip it over..."I'll Run" understated horns float above, gorgeously soulful girls diffuse through my space, as the song gently rises up into a spine-tingling MASTERPIECE of unrivalled mid-pace soulful elegance. Such embarrassment that this record came through my hands without being absorbed. I was far too young to understand the finer writing intricacies of the brilliant Maurice Simpkins.

It wasn't until my dealings with the New York/East Coast "Island Music" scene in the early90s that I was able to fully embrace these frighteningly awesome tunes the Northern Soul scene had only given a cursory glance to. Al McCarther ‎– His True Love For You, Lenny Vestel - It's Paradise, Johnny Dunn - False Pride.. recordings without parallel. The rarest of the rare in Beat Ballad Heaven, all of which were bootlegged. Today the originals are beyond elusive, that goes for Paul Smith - I'll Run - counterfeited because of the huge demand, but before you today, of course, is the authentic seldom seen for sale original.

Fortunately in the UK Sunday chill-out, especially "Carib Soul" in London an oasis of cool tunes and DJs with impeccable taste...

Today listen to what Northern Soul missed out on in those halcyon days whilst chasing the stompers..

Me? I'm catching up on lost tome., trying to find more and more records of this calibre.. unfortunately there wasn't too many ever tunes ever made that are drenched in this level of quality...

Just adore it... beyond words

Condition Report

Two clean labels, full gloss vinyl reveals only the softest hairlines, none of which affect plays. There is the forgivable soft thud from the uneven surface of the masterplate. No crackle, no pops just glorious seepinf from the speakers.
