Original 1968 UK Promo giving up two fabulous examples of early beginnings Prog Rock as Ray Philips and team deconstruct the Bob Dylan song, stamping their own progressive style into the proceedings.

Dropping the signature Dylan harmonica, producer Vic Smith replacing it with trippy "west coast" influenced guitar mastery. Edgy vocals prowling, piano pulses, drive the song, echoing choruses meld a magnificent excursion still retaining the mood of the "summer of love" a year before. Those haunting guitars having the power to swirl around your head, long after the record has finished.

Released in March 1968 it achieved very little in the way of sales, but possibly triggered Jimi Hendrix to enter it 6 months later onto his iconic "Electric Ladyland" album release. "All Along The Watchtower" ironically became Jimi's best selling 45 in the UK, Whilst this spectacular earlier British reworking by "Nashville Teens" fell by the wayside.

Personally I prefer this edgy, trippy inventive take from Jimi's, possibly because I'm only just hearing after an absence of decades. For me today it sits right up there with some of the very finest rock singles ever produced in the UK. But this disc is certainly much more than just a pathway for Hendrix to consider his track listing for his 3rd. and last studio album. the flipside is a magnificent original composition from the group, a potent R&B rocker with the whole band plus producer Vic Smith contributing to its creation.

Two great sides, one so addictive I've just gotta play it one more time.. "Watchtower" I'm finding is a narcotic version, that mesmerizes.

Condition Report

fully intact 4 prong centre, two clean promo labels, vinyl a-side reveals some light hairlines under direct light, but plays clean ; the flipside vinyl is 1/2 a grade lower with marginally more hairlines. As you can hear both sides play loud and clean. listen..
