Description

A unicorn-rare 1958 cocktail of thumpin' R&B / Rockabilly from the unlikely streets of Kingston, Jamaica. Both sides, as contrasting as they are, written by Archie Stephenson backed up by child prodigy pianist of the beginnings of Coxone. Monty "Dog It" Alexander and his Cyclones. An young talent who worked with Roland Alphonso, Ernest Raglin, provided the raucous backing for this rumbling late 50's R&B rocker with Monty Alexander furiously banging on his keyboard.

We first cover the R&B thumper "I'm Through" with Monty's piano / accordion mix opening proceedings, for Archie's nasal vocal bounce off of, creating a relentless crazy freestyle Rocker with few comparisons, Archie's enthusiasm rebounding off those relentless pounding notes encouragement.

A beyond rare 45 that has only been auctioned to my knowledge, once before. A rather shabby example that turned Ebay in a battlefield some years ago.

But that bidding war could just as easily been declared by the endearing Doo-Wop styled flipside ballad. Again Monty Alexander enriching the session with some calculated piano decoration in the background. An addictive ballad that will certainly catch the attention of the East Coast "Island Sound" DJs and collectors, as it suitably fits their discerning qualifying rhythms and vocal prowess.

Which ever sides drew those big bids we are not sure, but for me both sides have captured my imagination, painting a picture of Kingston, Jamaica in 1958 and the rich tapestry of quality music that was born on those streets. This example is one of the rarest 45's to emerge from that fabled era.
