BOOM! Top Drawer Northern Soul crowd pleaser.
A Northern Soul vocal group masterpiece! That just rams those floors into shoulder to shoulder dancefloor congestion.
I can actually remember when this was an occasional spin at the Blackpool Mecca circa ‘75/‘76, but never reaching the dizzy heights of other “Curtis” cliquish turntable delicacies, although my “Mecca”buddy Shelvo from Leicester would always pester Colin to spin it.
Just too classy for those golden years of Northern Soul diversity, when LP tracks by Tavares, Babe Ruth, The Miracles, Moments, Bobby Hutton, George Clinton were edging out these exclusively rare 45s with their dancer preferred dominance, presenting a moderner “Ritz floor-shaking” pulses.
So this St. Louis, Ms born male harmony killer, snoozed in its own obscurity, steadily it’s reputation growing, its value percolating towards boiling point. The lifeblood required to make this beauty explode into the complete Northern Soul monster, then happened. A local St. Louis dealer located enough copies to feed that simmering British DJ demand, allowing several NS jocks to play this gorgeous tune, simultaneously. It immediately exploded into being one of the scenes most-wanted, best-loved floor-packers of the 21st century. The previous dearth of copies had sadly hampered its undeniable class to be heard by enough dancers to trigger the unstoppable Northern Soul monster it became 30 years later.
Their were of course many collectors, DJs and dealers envious of the St. Louis “find”, instructing the scene to avoid buying a copy. “There was 1000’s found, it’ll be worthless next year” a dealer of renown advised me at the Austin Record convention. Oh how many times have we heard that one ? Of course there wasn’t 1000’s found, the market didn’t become irreparably flooded and the doubters and meddlers were left with “egg on their face” as supply quickly dried up as we watched the value soar and soar…
Today this beyond-brilliant Northern Soul beauty is one of the world-wide scene’s truly essential 45s…do not ponder the value of this eternal must-own is only going one way…
