Description

Lillia Lavell White, the teenage girl poet who blossomed into the top Texas R&B Diva when she was introduced to Don Robey of Duke / Peacock by local R&B singer Johnny Copeland, who she later dueted with as Johnny & Lilly on "Wet Soul" & "Veep"

This for me, is her very best session, from 1960. Two hugely powerful, big n' moody 1960 Deadric Malone creations. both sides giving up brooding Texas R&B.

When it comes to sister "Popcorn / R&B" "Stolen Love" is one of the very finest examples. The attention seeking Spanish guitar, slow intro is flipped on its head by rasping baritone saxophone, then Lillia steps in with her persuasive anguished voice, riding brass pulses, followed by a fabulously sombre saxophone break, bridging the mournful story together. Her voice rises and falls at all the right moments.

This is R&B / Popcorn at its very finest, in rare, rare unblemished condition.

Flip it over for the almost as brilliant "You're The Most " this, the original a-side showcases "Lillia" gliding on a raft of snaking flutes, coaxes Miss LaVell into labyrinth of comfy bluesy reflection as her man protects her from everything, including a cold biting wind. She feels absolutely safeguarded, but is still able to deliver a convincing sullen mood, that brings a level of pure Diva blues, the listener can't help but fall in love with.

This disc is so challenging to acquire in clean archive condition, this one is near mint, and it needs to be, to fully appreciate her sulky authentic Blues vocal, splendidly understated and smooth.

Condition Report

Red X on each label, full gloss vinyl. hardly a blemish to be seen on its beautiful gleaming surfaces. A beauty ...still housed in flipback birth-sleeve.
