A truly stunning early 60's girl floater with full vocal group support, a 1964 New York Budd Johnson production borrowing from the Motown hit formula created for Mary Wells, but Johnson retains a grain of soft Jazz within his creation, to make it a stand alone individualistic floater of pure class.

"I Was A Fool" is a Northern Soul stroller perfect for those laid back Sunday's, when the DJ is expected to pull at least a few surprises into his "Carib Soul" style session. Mary Wright has yet to break through to become as widely appreciated as it deserves. We do love exposing a few hidden treasures on these pages. This mid-tempo stepper is sodden in potential for a much larger audience. Beautifully constructed, in a way that takes you to that lone-girl era when zipping strings, a lush group harmony background rolling out the so-often-told-story; when the realization of "you never know what you've got until you lose it" hits you. An old narrative that always works so well, especially when a sweet voice portrays aching "regret".

The flipside is arguably even better, as Mary is this time supported by even richer harmony backdrop, moving it into not only "Carib Soul" territory but also "Lowrider" and "Sunday Chill-out" possibilties.

Both sides just drip with pure quality, silky smooth, addictive and vastly superior to most everything of this style, from a transitional era when the record producer still valued the romantic power of full blown harmony landscape cradling a seamless sister vocal. Two faultless potrayals of remorse...

Two great tunes, one elusive disc, that we feel is perched and ready to rise up within any of the three vibrant rare-soul scenes mentioned above.

Acqire ASAP or live is regret.
