British Decca led with the Motownesque mid-tempo delight "Dear Lover", whilst the British allniite Soul clubs championed the frantic Barrett Strong stomper "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)" firing up the need for amphetamine burn-off.

But as dance-trends evolved through the decades, it was "Dear Lover" that took up pole-position as the DJ's choice. The gifted partnership of Gerald Sims & Carl Davis replicate Mary's Motown moods, simulating her Smokey Robinson classics with a finger-clicking, zipping string stepper driven by simplistic piano notes showering subtle horns. Just a seamless mid-tempo delight arguably trumping her Motown past. With a fabulous instrumental interlude towards the finale.

But when it comes to Twisted Wheel revival evenings, it has to be the foot-tangling "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)" that whips up the euphoria on a frantic dancefloor.

Two classic sides framing one of soul's most-loved of all, soul-songbirds.
