Jamaica does Rare Soul...

Rare UK Reggae 45 currently crossing over into the Rare Soul scene for more reasons than one...

Topside played by those intrepid Carib-Soul boys (Del & Michael) upon recent gracing of Doncaster's legendary Sunday chills at the Horse and Groom. Here is an impossibly clean 1970 UK press, on one of those artistic Pama labels we all adore..

It was the a-side "It's Grows" that caught the ear. A fabulous version with full group harmony choruses cradling "Jimmy" Riley's crisp vocal. Of course it's a version of the Tamla Motown classic The Temptations - It's Growing" - a fine version it is too; driven by Soul influenced Jamaican dance rhythms. I hear it turned a few heads at the "H & G" as the lead vocal was an instant ear-pricker with the backing boys velvety slick harmony, dare we say, very "Temps-esque"

Guiro ratcheted rhythms drive the song along, with those honeyed voices adding the Soul element.. not too many Rare Soul DJ's will own this 45, in acceptable condition.

We said at the start "for more reasons than one"... well, just flip it over, to be amazed at a top-quality Deep Soul stroller. Check out "We Had a Good Thing Growing" a beseeching Beast-Ballad decorated by a haunting flute, soon to be joined by a considerate "Muscle Shoals" inspired bank of horns. It's a stunning piece of real-deal Soul from a most unlikely place, the flipside of a Temptations cover.

A double header of real substance in a rare level of condition, do not pass by. we can see the 45 growing in stature as the ripples of it's Horse & Groom debut spread far and wide...With the flipside has yet to be let lose on the Soul fraternity..

but maybe this Sunday at Feed Your Soul, Newark. Another iconic Sunday chill-out venue it will receive a long overdue turntable outing.

Condition Report

Both sides of the vinyl are flawless, 4 prong centre intact. Those artistically brilliant labels, clean except for a discreet L.P. written on the a-side
