Description

California 1977 memories of dust up my nose for two weeks. Local Stockton, California soul band loosely associated with other Stockton soul artists like Waymon Hall,The Calif. Malibus, Apollos Show Band etc. Stockton had a small local soul scene but it gave up some fine low-run independent labels promoting interesting and talented artists..

The Lo-Kals released only three 45s locally, all seldom seen for sale; all very hard acquire and most still sitting under-the-NS radar.

In the late 70's Stockton was a regular port of call for me; after visiting the iconic denim waist-coated John Hillyard who always had great vinyl, the dapper Bob Catteneo a proper soul dealer, Rip Lay's mind-boggling 4 million 45s warehouse in Concord, then on to Stockton, and the "Bird-man" his back yard outbuilding full of 1000's of 45s. Then on to the super-suspicious hard to deal with owner of the K-Street record store in Sacramento and then the ultimate prize of Richard A. Bass's vinyl treasure trove (still one of the finest collections of odd-ball 45s I've ever seen). Before ending up in a bar a the backwoods town Clarkesville, that had a record room near it, where an indestructible, chain-smoking wheelchair- bound man had been hoarding 45s for decades. That trip was a regular twice a year, two weeks of hard work, pulling in "Village Music" in Mill Valley, Mark Edmond in Albany... and the very beginnings the of "Amoeba" empire.

These were the very best days of my life, finding rare soul 45s all day every day. Until there was so much dust up my nose, all I needed was a beer and a long sleep.

But Stockton always disappointed, it felt like a city that should have had records everywhere, a poor town, but other than "The Bird Man" it didn't have any hoards of vinyl that I could find. Although I did locate a meagre few Waymon Hall's, The Calif. Malibus, Apollos Show Band along the way; but I can testify the "Lo-Kals" were one very hard group to find anything by. Apparently playing live in bars was their "thing" not making records seeking a hit. ( I was told) by the local "Freitas" record store owner.

Now, nearly 50 years later I still feel a glow inside when I remember the road trips, in California. I even once had a good record haul from a bookshop in Lake Tahoe...

The best of days I was very, very lucky to be addicted to rare soul vinyl digging at a time when they were still out there to find... today I have more chance of waking up with Beyonce than finding this disc in the wild...

Condition Report

Two clean labels, full gloss vinyl reveals only a few soft surface hairlines.
