We actually lead with this side, over the brilliant "40 Days" as "Do You Get The Message" is proper real-deal Northern Soul saturated in the potential to become a humongous Allniter sound. After living in the shadows of being a flipside for too long. We are sure you'll be blown away by all the ingredients Mike Terry showers upon this uncompromising dancer. Reminding me of other meaty NS recordings by Jerry Cook, Johnny Sayles, Marvin Sims and the like. Growling lead vocal, sizzling girl-group choruses, a barrage of blasting brass. Pelted with bluesy guitar breaks and pulsating drums driving the pace, but all the while Jimmy's imposing message snarls its way to the fore.
Overlooked Chicago Northern Soul - the genuine article - oozing with attitude!
I think she and us "Got The Message"
The other side of course is Joshie Jo Armstead's brilliant song " Rained 40 Days & Nights" supervised again by the immortal Mike Terry. The original version of the song, that Garland Green so silkily recreated is forgotten with Little Jimmy's version benefiting from his credible desperation drenching the lyrics. That repetitive guitar riff hooks into you, his gravel-coated vocal, all making for a meatier Northern Soul experience of real presence and attitude. That will actually have you believing it really did rain for 40 days and nights.
Love both sides, with the message being ... how long can the Northern Soul scene leave stompers of this quality sit at the back of the box..
One listen, you will be asking...why?
