Description

For decades the Northern Soul culture has feasted on highly regarded Northern Soul cruiser " Isn't It Just A Shame", one utterly captivating "never bootlegged or reissued NS dancefloor favourite.

But in more recent times the wondrous flipside "I Can't Stop" has become equally revered, with more and more people get to experience its mesmeric charms of its outpouring of ironic regret. The mysterious Kenny Wells from New York is blessed with a typically rich sulking Herb Bernstein arrangement and a truly magnificent Gary Knight kitchen-sink production from composer Gary Knight, drawing from his apprenticeship under demigod of the recording studio Bob Crewe.

The embellishment of a male-vocal-group harmony and the boost of a trombone salvo, elevate this, my now preferred side, into Beat Ballad Heaven grandeur. Utterly brilliant, a Sunday "chill" essential!!

The Big Apple had few more accomplished teams than the one assembled by Bob Crewe in his endless search of excellence. Constantly servicing the Northern Soul scene with richly endowed productions of overwhelming class, beauty and inspiration. This disc calls upon the skills of Gary Knight, Herb Bernstein, Artie "I Can't Help Lovin' You" Schroeck producing not one, but two spectacular mid-paced Northern Soul cruisers.

The obvious side the highly coveted "Isn't It just a Shame" has for decades been held in high-regard with the DJ's, Collectors and the dancefloors of more discerning NS events thought the last century, escaping the dubious fate of being bootlegged until the year 2000, when the magnificent flipside was criminally passed over. How very refreshing, that it doesn't seem this captivating style is not the diet-list of the bootleggers to reproduce truly classy Northern Soul grooves. Which certainly adds to this 45's DJ kudos.

But for me it is that hidden delight that sat on the flipside, that raises the hairs on my neck, distilled Soul seeps from the grooves as the Kenny Wells' vocal is cradled by a male-harmony flow of beseeching validation of his despair, brought on by being a "fool" .

Two utterly brilliant tunes, one a NS classic with a flipside that should be an essential part of Sunday chilling.

Crafted by New York's finest.
