Description

Description

Two masterly mid-tempos from the summer of 1969 back to back on one extremely elusive Los Angeles "ghost".

That started its British journey as a renowned 100 Club cover-up play for the "guvnor" Ady Croasdell, causing a sensation, as hoards of rival DJ's and eager collectors, tried to find pout its true identity; after the finder inappropriately credited the song to an "unconvincing" Richard Temple.

First recorded by Debbie Curtis on Jack Brown's D.I.Y. label JaBro; Juan Williams continues with Rosa Davis' narrative of a aching mournful testament to the frustration and worry of abandonment, triggered by the absence of no letter from his/her loved one.

This 1969 "Blue Soul" recording is blessed with the luxury of the consummate studio skills of the great Willie Hutch, along with Jack Brown himself the couple throw down a carpet of moodiness, cradled by choir of shrill girls, prompted by "Thee Counts" providing a sulking saxophone, subtle percussion and hanging guitar riffs, supporting Juan in his, as he convincingly pours out his constant anguish...as the despair becomes more and more unbearable.

The perfect tune for the 100 Club in Oxford Street, 3 flights of stairs descend you into real-deal sorrowful soulfulness where for decades, heartbreaking soul tunes have been the stable diet for its regulars.

But I must point out our surprise that the flipside, a truly killer deconstruction of "The Miracles" Motown classic "My Girl Has Gone" has not attracted as many followers as "My Mailbox" when the artistic J. B. Bingham gives Smokey Robinson's song a facelift, changing the pace, giving it an enchanting dance-beat with burping saxophone, violin-string plucks, zipping full string section, all slide into place for a "Motown" remake with an identity of its own.

Two brilliant sides, one extremely rare disc. Listen now and prepare to be impressed.
