Description

Description

Big John an integral part of The Philadelphia Soul scene during the early 60’s, working with the up and coming writers and producers of the embryonic Philly sound. Rubbing shoulders with Steve Shulman, Frankie Beverley, Norman Baker, Johnny Stiles, Mike Lewis etc. With his successful local group “The Philadelphians” before branching out on his own, as the peripheral John Bowie. As others in his past contributed to the birth of TSOP within the rich tapestry of Philadelphia’s black music Soul scene.

But there is absolutely nothing unremarkable about his lone single Bowie released on Merben Record in 1966; when John’s two compositions came under the guidance of talented conductor Bob Lowden. A jazz man and trombonist with a full orchestra of his own to call into the studio. Resulting in two mighty Northern Soul movers, that today enjoy a huge collector’s following hoping to one day achieve ownership.

Big John’s rich vocal supported by the weight of a Lowden’s full orchestra, a man with the experience and know how of layering an arrangement, producing an ever increasing build up of power, was the perfect marriage, giving birth to two muscular “big city” NS winners. Sadly John Bowie and Robert Lowden made only two singles together. Before Bowie’s 45rpm career came to a close working with even more Philadelphia Northern Soul magicians Luther Randolph (Harthon) , Bob “Girl Across The Street” Finiz and Ross “Prove Yourself A Lady” Matico.

Why fate limited John Bowie output when he seemed to have been acquainted with so many Philly Northern Soul contributors may remained a mystery. But this is by far his greatest ever studio session. A real monster oldie, that seldom comes to market.
