Description

Description

Universally acknowledge by R&B/Blues/Soul scholars as one of Texas's greatest ever writing, singing talents.

Just three years younger than Bobby Blue Bland, growing up in the same town, and later signed to the same iconic local label Duke. Joe you would think was heavily influenced by his local Blues idol, but the truth is equally the reverse; as Joe was a lyrical genius writing countless songs for Don Robey owner of Duke / Peacock labels, usually losing the credit but gaining immediate payment to enjoy his very sociable lifestyle.

Coincidently Joe possessed that same gargling throaty voice; that effortlessly snarling, growling whilst singing these usually self-composed lyrics. Joe and Bobby were certainly similar in style and expression, with Bobby singing a plethora of Joe's creations. With Joe staying away from the limelight, that could so easily have been his also.

On this 1969 creation he collaborates with another Houston-born Texas R&B bandleader and trumpeter Calvin Owens. All the experience Calvin gain from being B. B. King's musical director shines through on this session with Owen's opening blast of his preferred instrument. Brutal percussion drive the horns, Joe's vocal as we've heard so many times before is not damped by the full-blown surroundings. His fable-painting lyrics shine through as he manages to mention most every pillar from the bible, whilst neatly slotting James Brown into the biblical roll call.

The comes an earthshattering instrumental break, starting with a double-bass solo, Calvin's fully energized trumpet and brutally relentless Gatling Gun percussion...

A full Texas attack on your Northern Soul R&B senses... incessantly powerful dancer, as you'd expect from this great man, he backs it up with defiant slab of roaring bluesy Deep Soul.
