Hugely popular current dancefloor filler. A Papa Don Schroeder guided version of the 1963 Norman Johnson's "Showmen" classic..

General Johnson not only had one of the last century's most distinctive voice, he also had remarkable gifts as a lyricist, this song being a prime example of his imagination transformed into clever, sing-a-long lyrics. A Carolina Beach Music anthem.

When this version started to get plays on the Northern Soul event circuit; I did hear, some misguided comments of "Pop version". Which couldn't be further from the truth, the producer although "Papa Don" was a white guy. He was also responsible for a plethora of 60's Soul classics for such notable artists as James & Bobby Purify, Mighty Sam, Moses & Joshua Dillard to name but a few..

Then there's the fact that Jimmy Jones is the same ethnicity as Norman Johnson, with Jimmy also serving an impressive musical apprenticeship singing in Doo-Wop groups The Pretenders, The Berliners & The Savoys. Before renowned New York writer/producer Otis Blackwell picked him out of obscurity; to become a successful solo artist. So Jimmy Jones was no "pop" artist although his most famous 45 "Handy Man" crossed over from R&B to the Billboard Top 100.

"39 - 21 - 46 Shape" is a damn fun dance record, both sides of the Atlantic. Whether it be Jimmy Jones or The General singing it, it's an instant dancefloor igniter..

and we've not even mentioned yet, it's glorious format.. an irresistible August 1967 green & white British Demo!
