THE PHILCO RECORD Hip Pocket Record a little bit of history:

Before the Sony Walkman was even a passing thought of mobile music, there was the Hip-Pocket Record player marketed in the USA circa 1967. THe first big businesses attempt at making vinyl portable and affordable for 50 Million kids of America (so the advertising says)

Philco-Ford invented the battery operated record player you could carry in one hand or even slip into your coat pocket along with the fabulously package records in picture sleeves that can fit in your back-pocket; Don't worry apparently you can sit on them as they are virtually indescribable, according to the launched advertising at the time . These tiny 3.7/8th inch records for the mini-turntable were available in Woolworth and other USA chain department stores. With a deal struck with Atlantic, Mercury, Roulette & Apple to ensure top hits were available for this revolutionary invention, all the records came in a card-backed special picture sleeve. These are highly collectable with the Beatles "Apple" releases achieving 3 figure sums at auction.

See images for titles.
Rock fans it includes the particularly rare Doors - Light My Fire, Van Morrison- Brown Eyed Girl etc.

Soul fans this offering inc: Etta James - Tell Mama 2. Otis Redding - Shake / Fa Fa Fa 3. Brenton Wood - Gimme A Little Sign 4. Isley Brothers - Twist And Shout 5. Jay & The Techniques - Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie 6. James & Bobby Purify - I'm Your Puppet 7. Shirelles - Soldier Boy 8. The Dells - There Is 9. Bo Diddley - I'm A Man 10. Aretha Franklin - Respect 11. Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music + 22 more discs.

This idea soon fell by the wayside as mini cassettes and later the "Walkman" stole the market. Today these more than cute discs, enjoy a cult following, with endless possibilities of framing, display, or just to marvel at a project that failed but left the serious record collector something to treasure. The record players still in working order are super-rare, but wouldnm't it be fun tru=ing to acquire one.

Historically important and such a joy on the eye.

A rare, fun new collecting line for the vinyl-head
