A listing for Soul connoisseurs who strive to own the seriously obscure and the ultimate rarities, of under-the-radar Soul..

Although Ace / Kent Records, as always, have covered those murky recesses of independent 60's Soul by highlighting the talents of producers like Bill Haney, to acquire this 45 on Bill's "Chant" label, (the imprints first 45.) is really quite a capture.

For the narrative behind this wonderful 45; we have to travel to the Peach City of Atlanta, Georgia where Bill picked up an hitchhiker "Jarvis Jackson" near to Bill Lowery's NRC studio, this led to the ambitious Jackson to reinvent himself as Gay Meadows and cut this killer track, "Only Love" which draws heavily from the New York Sound of the current hit "Stand By Me".

"Only Love" sits somewhere between pleading Deep Soul and the Big City Sound of the Brill Building. Haney brilliantly incorporated the Guiro to mimic the "Stand By Me" effect, with Jarvis's consummate delivery so effortlessly smooth and so beseechingly emotive. Quality recording borm from Bill's & Jarvis's first meeting. But sadly it failed to sell, or receive airplay and today stands as one very elusive 45 indeed!

The flipside (original a-side) "Frozen Love" gives up a meatier recording, a solid plodding Arthur Alexander type NS dancer, peppered with Tex-Mex styled trumpeting and persistent driving piano pulses. Making the disc much more than just a one-trick-pony. Two good sides...

An attempt to give the 45 a national airing was opened up when Jamie Guyden released it, but it failed mirersbly again and today is almost as rare as the "Chant" first pres.s Guyden 2088 was most probably promo only and rarely comes to market. Here is the first label from Atlanta, giving up two rather cool tunes, with the "Only Love" being a fabulous Beat Ballad Heaven trophy-piece.
