Description

Description

Even though it's a flipside, "Cantelope Rock" is one of my all-time favourite Rock Steady instrumentals, featuring the brilliance of Skatalites founder member Joe Joe Bennett who directs this inspiring dancer whilst peppering those relentless bass guitar pulses, incessant percussive rattlings and fierce ricocheting piano notes; showered with all manner of horn manipulation from the seven man team The Fugitive.

The result is mesmeric, melding into an exquisite far-eastern journey of into irresistible dance. Deconstructing Hugh Masekela "Cantelope Rock" turning into another animal of desire, the highpoint for me, is a surprise full but short blast of Joe Joe on his trumpet followed by a bari-tone saxophone and trumpet coupling.. making it a recording that stays in your head long, long after the arm is lifted.

The flipside is an equally mesmeric, convincing, with a change of style as Joe Joe directs a more subtle approach with a "Lecture" woven into a simplistic but just as addictive as the sound of The Fugitives, over-flows with consummate musicianship, with a rich vocalist chanting the undoubted virtues of those gifted band members.

Two great sides, but "Cantelope Rock" is very very special indeed!

Condition Report

Two clean labels, see images. 3 prong centre intact, see images. Vinyl reveals multiple soft surface hairlines, nothing deep, listen you can hear both sides play crisp, loud and clean with little no background, instruments remain dominant and clear. vg overall.
