This Jackie Lee & Bob Relf moment of genius has never ever had the affect on me. I recall as a fledging 18 year old Soul collector at college in Leicester, along with a class mate, we'd read Blues & Soul, check out the new releases then go down to Ainley's record store, near the clock tower. We'd order anything recommended by Dave Godin in his must-read column and also anything Jay Boy released. It was our favourite label of the moment. We'd already secured "The Cats" monster by Richard Temple, a record I hadn't heard until it arrived.. it of course blew me away. As did Philip Mitchell's - Free For All, Jackie Lee's - Oh My Darlin' . Then there was two released in the same week The Furys - I'm Satisfed With You & The Fi-Dels - Try A Little Harder..
As an 18 year having these two records at the same time, traveling home on the train, rushing to your bedroom at 25 Baldocks Lane and dropping them onto the turntable one after the other was an exhilarating experience I'll never forget, It was just the most inspiring Soul dance music I've ever heard. I remember my Mum wondering what all the commotion was about, as I stomped around my bedroom like a teenager possessed, the "Exorcist" Movie was only a year away...
But I was now utterly bedevilled, enthralled... totally consumed by the tumultuous effect Northern Soul was having on me.. I was of course hooked and I still am.. before me today are not only the delights of holding a near perfect vinyl of an influential classic. It is also an euphoric moment of time-travel, an experience back to my formative years of Northern Soul... I was of course just one of 1000's of youngsters up and down the country living this investigative musical experience...
For me "Try A Little Harder" is one of the most superlative NS tunes of them all ..
Not to mention those of you serious about condition, you'll find this record had not been played until we lifted the double sound file. A little storage browning on the label, otherwise impeccable condition.
NOTE: Northern Soul DJ's seeking something imaginative, excitingly fresh a head-turner of haunting qualities check out the neglected flipside.. utterly awesome Soul from the mind of Bob Relf.
Condition ReportFlawless vinyl, previously unplayed before the double soundfile was lifted. Both label have a light h2o browning, the green text is unaffected.
