A record first championed by the late great Roger Stewart. Rare Soul DJ and legendary lifetime servant of the Northern Soul scene, remembered for his impeccably selective DJ sets. Roger's support for Esther Philips - Just Say Goodbye - travelled from the iconic confines of the 100 Club on Oxford Street to become one of Northern Soul's evergreen anthems. The perfect "last" record, that can be played at any time of an event and still trigger the exact same affect of appreciation. A dancefloor applause catalyst every time...

"Just Say Goodbye" starting life with the Mongo Santamaria group's pianist, the band performed a fine instrumental version. A lyrical collaboration came from Rogers & Ruth Grant, with Rogers Grant rolling out the simplistic but narcotic off-beat piano pulses. Partnered by another inventive Jazz artist/producer saxophonist Oliver Nelson; outstripping Mongo's arrangement on Columbia, bedecking the production with rich brass whilst "Rogers" piano decoration leads the way, Nelson ramps up the session when a full brass section elevates the song yet again. A finally laced with Oliver Nelson flute adornments.

But overriding even this highly accomplished ensemble of Jazz musicians, who are careful not to detract the song from one of R&B's most memorable voices. Miss Esther Phillips her shiver-inducing quavering throaty vocal, so unique, so intensely attractive, a songbird who's incomparable mood-changing powers elevate this song right up into Soul Heaven.

One of Northern Soul's indelible offerings; absorbing, unforgettable blending of R&B and Jazz, that today certainly stands as one of my all time Northern Soul favourites, a record I never ever tire of hearing.

Thank you Roger for your investigative enthusiasm and impeccable taste, and everything you brought to the Northern Soul scene. .

Before you today, an immaculate 1965 USA Promo copy, a 45 to treasure, we think.

So rare as a flawless White Promo, a record that could so easily have been "lost" as Atlantic unbelievably hid this masterpiece away on the flipside of a bland non-hit. . An eternal testament to Roger Stewart and his impeccable taste, thank you Roger.
