One of three 45's that Richard Berry's wife Dorothy recorded, under the influence of the young up and coming studio fledgling David Gates, who was about to become a world famous writer / producer.

This Los Angeles session for Dot Records in October 1964 initially choses the upbeat R&B shaker "Ain't That Love" as the a-side; a heavily influenced by "High Heel Sneaker" type rhythms, that were so successful for Motown and other companies of the 1964 era. Although "Ain't That Love" has over the years received occasional Northern Soul club attention, the frantic pace is now out of kilter with today's dancefloor styles.

Now entering into the Northern Soul arena is the hypnotic finger-clicking Latin pulses of "You Better Watch Out", David Gates capturing the very essence of hip-shaking Californian Latin Soul rhythms; for Dorothy and her supporting girls to brilliantly sashay through; an inventive instrumental partition in the middle throws some light on things that were to come from the 24 year old virtuoso.

Dorothy of course has never disappointed no matter what she sings. For me, Dorothy carries the same joyous optimistic persona, as our own Dusty Springfield would inject into her sessions. Singing saturated in sister enthusiasm that transfers to the dance-floor. With David Gates at the helm, a song is always going to shimmer with the power to uplift...
