These pages do allow us to highlight a few interesting "sleepers" that will again have their day. This fabulous cover version of the Eddie Holland & Norman Whitfield collaboration for Gladys Knight and The Pips, later brilliantly covered by Jimmy Ruiffin. You would think an Englishmen couldn't do it justice, after those two greats had performed it. But couldn't be more wrong.

Take a strong experience Brit-vocal, put it before one of Britian's most gifted arrangers Mr. Charles Blackwell, it would be a breeze to compliment the "Motown Sound" after-all Charles was used to working of full theme scores like "What's New Pussycat?" "After The Fox" given the the thumbs up validation of Burt Bacharach, who worked closely with him. In The studio with him on this session was Tony Clarke, considered the most talented "in-house" producer Decca had on their team.

Motown had already laid down the way for Clarke & Blackwell to go, rich horns, relentless echoing chirping girl-group choruses captures the Motor City completely, the brass partition in the middle is nothing short of breathtaking. With Bobby Hanna having that soft growl at the back of his throat this production becomes arguably the best job "The Brits" ever did with a Motown recording.

Listen and prepare to be amazed, after hearing so many inferiors British works of Soul that came before it.. every note as good as those originals. Presented here as an irresistible May 1968 promo is just beautiful condition..

go on listen again, hearing is believing!
