Description

Much more than a Wigan Casino anthem, this unlikely, accidental NS dance instrumental, became the soundtrack of a then embryonic Northern Soul movement that swept over the country in 1973 onwards, forever altering the path of 1000's of youngsters who ventured into the British Northern Soul allniter circuit, to become part of its fabric for the next 50years.

An unforgettable vision, peering down from the iconic horseshoe balcony onto a teeming jam-packed dancefloor, ignited by wrecking-ball piano notes punching holes into the under-belly of a whirling "calliope-esque" swirl of high-pitched notes. A tune brilliantly conjured by Kenny Young to sit on the flipside of an absurd Christmas theme "Lapland". A stranger more unlikely Northern Soul hit doesn't exist. But as with all Northern Soul favourites there are no rules, if it enflames the dancefloor, that is all that's required for turntable action.

I defy anyone who experienced "The Casino" in full flow, and the stylus hits this "banger" to not have exhilarating memories of its effect on everyone there!

A truly bizarre beginning for an American recording, to rise up to become a theme tune for the world's most famous 70s club, that helped develop the largest underground music scene, on the planet.

Not so crazy really, we know this instrumental has absolutely nothing to do with soul music, but the moment that intoxicating cocktail of piano and organ connect it is phosphorous on water moment...

Northern Soul ignition time!

Is this Wigan Casino's most-memorable instrumental ... the balcony dancefloor mayhem vista, seals it for me.
