March 1966 Johnny Hartsman & Ron Badger's put together this take on the Jesse James "Grail" on Shirley, and for me every note as good and cut around the same time.

The Bay Area's main Jazz / Soul man Johnny was the driving force behind so many great Bay Area productions, on this 45 the added enterprise of local entrepreneur label owners Ron Badger and Jesse Mason. You have authentic Bay Area vocal group Northern Soul; featuring one of Lonnie Hewitt's Wee team Ernie Marbary, along with the lesser know Elzie Walker, Tommie Stevenson & Wendell Adams. The four man gathering ripple with vocal harmony prowess, whilst the "Triad" of Badger, Hartsman & Mason ensure a silky dance rhythms carry those creamy vocals along.

Top-drawer Northern Soul that has somehow lived in the shadows of its separated at birth, Jesse James - Are You Gonna Leave Me - today a rather expensive record indeed.

So now listen to a flawless version from a talent quartet and ask yourself can the "Shirley" release really be considered at 4 or 5 times it's value..?

Classy, uplifting and elusive.. currently under-valued? But surely not for too much longer... as your ears and feet will soon qualify.
