Description

Rare & superior "Popcorn" version of Bobby Sharp's 1956 "Clippity clop" cowboy campfire inspired original, that Ruth Brown much-improved the same year on Atlantic, giving it a much harder R&B edge to the dreamy original.

But it is this 1961 version from "Adonis" film star of the movie "Atlantis, the Lost Continent" Anthony Hall easily that takes first place of the 3 versions. This later moody revamp by Anthony Hall, is not only, by far the rarest, but also easily the most effective take.

Just killer Popcorn by an under-the-radar Philly crooner with the booming bottomless voice, with the Keffer Sisters embroidering their shrill girl-group choruses behind Anthony's pleading vocal. Far more effective when played at 45rpm, as is the screeching saxophone drilling into the mood. Compared with the lone YouTube offering that is slowed down by a marginal rpm's, I much prefer this recording at the prescribed 45rpm..

I could see this Popcorn cruiser, with a more concerted club exposure, or in the capable hands of Lady Jodie Lamb becoming an absolute monster… it certainly riveted my attention after just the opening bars.

Mesmerizing, sulking, down and dirty proper " Popcorn" I've found utterly captivating from the very first note.

Those Keffer Sisters choruses just elevate it into another level of addictive Popcorn.
