Stormy

I Won't Stop To Cry / The Devastator

Very pleased to get this 45 back in stock, as since we last had a copy, it’s demand has strengthened yet again, on the back of strong “Mick H” spins; after bubbling away in Soul Club conversations, as to which side should be first upon those Rare-Soul turntables, Mick has done just that with “I Won’t Stop To Cry” pleasuring his followers.

I’m as guilty as anyone as I change my mind every time this spirited Chicago Northern Soul dancer comes my way.

We also lead with “I Won’t Stop To Cry” a perfect Northern Soul experience, knitting bold brass with creamy cooing vocals. Harmony & muscle forge a very impressive dancer, which the Old-school scholars have admired for an age..

Flip over, for a newer NS kid on the block, as the previously passed by “Devastator” is now the tune also in the ascendancy; with it’s edgy attitude vocals, propelled by rattling rim-shots, hard blown horns and a haunting arrhs & oohs echoing away background. This is superior Northern Soul just beginning to make waves.. Foolproof All Niter fuel, it has everything required for these of you who enjoy pushing the boundaries with the punchy dance routines..

Me, with my archaic dancing ability, I’ll stick with the silky stroller we opened with..

Two proper-tunes on one very elusive disc..

Shirley Lawson

One More Chance / The Star

Michigan meets Texas to become a British citizen.

English release Rare Soul collecting does not get much more gratifying than capturing a Soul city 45 inside it’s birth-sleeve.

Especially when it’s this iconic Dave Godin label’s most highly valued release. It sold sparsely upon whilst available in 1968, with Shirley being an “unknown” artist in the UK at the time and Dave leading with stomping Texas conceived side “The Star” instead of the Detroit conceived side “One More Chance” that in more recent times has emerged as the culprit for total-dancefloor-congestion.

The Motor City’s answer to Sam & Dave “The Soul Twins” together craft a pleading song so perfectly wrapped into a dance-beckoning arrangement. Keyboard magician Johnny Griffith and partner Richard Green construct “Crossover” perfection …

Whilst on the flip the Houston, Texas / Detroit, Michigan collaboration thrives, (as it did with many Bobby Williams’s Sure Shot sessions) with an uncompromising “Sister Stomper” pumping out a frenzied honkin’-horn-driven Northern Soul stomper, right in the old-style..

So, this listing is certainly not just a very pretty face; this 45 also gives you two Northern Soul delicacies sitting at both ends of the NS spectrum.

Condition as you can tell from the unblemished label, is quite stunning.. other than a few sleeve-brush hairlines, this disc is darn close to perfection..

Lee Mckinley & The Magnetics

Count The Days / When I'm With My Baby

Only a very few records, have the presence to make their discovery unforgettable, a turntable drop that lifts a DJ set into greatness; or a hearing, a dance, turning your Club visit into just the most remarkable moment of the week..

Only the truly immense Rare Soul recordings have the power to do all these things..

The first copy was found by a quirk of fate in a house in Columbus, Ohio where I’d already finished looking at the collectors spare records, and was ready to leave, when one of those mid-west Biblical storms broke, with lightning shafts from the vinyl-Gods preventing my departure.

A coffee in his front room was being sipped as the storm past over, in the corner was a piano, under the piano was a tiny pile of maybe 25 45’s I hadn’t seen yet. I had to look, and in that pile was a Chandlers -“Your Love Makes Me Lonely” and this record by “The Magnetics” I’d never seen before.. had to buy it without even listening to it.. they were only a “buck” a piece, as were most Soul 45s back in 1977/78…

Back home I debuted it at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens, it went down a “Storm”…I had an exclusive, I also had a tune to set my set aglow. The side I played was “When I’m With By Baby”, just instant Northern Soul fuel.

I never even considered the “Count The Days” side, I actually can’t even remember listening to it… a far more astute DJ was to play that side a few years on and turn it into one of the greatest examples Northern Soul vocal-group dance, ever played.

So when, last Sunday in the steaming heat of the day. Brian Pinches dropped the arm of “Count The Days”, all surrounding conversation was muted by my brain, as in wonderment I listened, to one of my now all time faves, in the sultry atmosphere of “Feed Your Soul” Newark… I was in a self-imposed trance, only usually brought on, by those words “It’s Your Round…!”

Or if you would like a more persuasive critique of “Count Your Days”; Facebook Soul Queen, Kirsty Connolly gave her personal assessment of as.. ” … makes my knickers go soggy and my knockers get perky”

Me too, Kirsty, me too..

Anita Anderson

Little Bit Longer / Secretly

Before you today is an extremely Rare Northern Soul trophy-piece

One of only a handful of copies known - a double helping of beseeching Chicago Sister Northern Soul with a heart-stopping vocal, that simultaneously moves the mind & body, with it’s simplistic, addictive qualities.

Anita’s innocence drips from every word, her young-girl voice deliciously quavering as she delivers her plea, with unobtrusive male vocal group chorus elevating the recording into greatness - with the simple is genius approach!!

Flip it over for a similar style, with those guys again enriching an already killer creation. The production team raise the pace half a notch without losing any of it’s truly haunting qualities, with Anita again giving up a little-girl-lost performance with her “boyfriends” again supporting with those timely seamless choruses.

TOP DRAWER SISTER NORTHERN SOUL at it’s most elusive.

Two flawless labels, vinyl reveals only the mildest of tiny hairlines under lights, and as you have already heard BOTH sides of this dreamy rarity play perfectly.

Tear Drops / Don't Wait Too Long

Sometimes a piece of vinyl can ignite all those forgotten emotions of your youth, the tingling sensation rushing up your neck, the hairs on your arm bristle, the heart beat gathers pace and your breathing stutters…

That is when you know your in the presence of a Northern Soul Grail! A record that offers that “Summit Of Everest” moment when you hold it in your hands…you morph into “Gollum” rubbing your hands together with uncontrollable enthusiasm the high-pitched words “Yes, Yes, Yes!! fire from your larynx..”Precious” “Precious” “It’s Mine”

Then that moment you realize it “Ain’t Mine” it’s actually for sale… I’m now feeling that “Tottenham Hotspur” moment in May… a fabulous high..followed by a terrible come-down, when reality struck home.. It can’t be mine and most probably never will be.

So rarely does this masterpiece of Vocal-group Northern Soul break-surface, I’ll just have to be content to just hold and admire the vision for 3 weeks…

Well, that’s the incurable vinyl-addicts view..

The DJ’s view, is that certainty of a full danceflloor, the tumultuous applause that follows those final notes fading..

The dancer’s perspective, it’ll most probably be the most exhilarating 3 minutes of the weekend.. this “NS-impossible” has everything, total completeness, with the power to change your mood, change your night, in fact change your year…

And we’ve not even mentioned the sumptuous slab of sweet Soul that lay hidden on the flipside… Low Rider Utopia..

I’m outta here before I destroy myself in a whirlpool of superlatives..

One last thing, this offering is utterly flawless in every way M - / M - / M- … totally breathless will not be able to view or listen to again for at least 24 hours..

Timothy Wilson

Timothy Wilson

Timothy Wilson, how do you describe the uninvited affect this Soul-man’s voice has on me, without sounding like emotional sentimental crybaby, that I most certainly am, when challenged by the world’s greatest Soul Singers.. Walter Jackson does the same thing.. eyes fill up and the more you try to hold it back, the darn worse it gets..

Maybe it’s because this most gifted of artists never reached the heights he so very much deserved.. how frustrating must it been to own a voice that make men cry, and you record company ignores your genius, and fails to release tracks like the instantly uplifting “It’s Love Baby” or the equally moving “Who Babe” both ideal vehicles for his emotion-siphoning vocal, to do it’s work.

H&L took only two recordings from this album, releasing them back to as a 12”. Yes you’ve guessed it, the two “Disco” Boogie cuts, which completely camouflage his genius..

So take time to listen to two tracks, that push me toward tears as wellas the dancefloor.. then ask yourself did these guys in charge of record companies understand, appreciate or even care about real-deal Soul music… ever regret their blinkered management whilst chasing the $$, but burying Soul masterpieces in their wake.

Thank Heavens that the European crate-diggers never, never miss an exceptional tune.. no matter where it hides.

Richard Wylie And His Band

Money (that's What I Want) / I'll Still Be Around

As I carefully slip this Motown artifact from it’s birth sleeve, of so very carefully so there’s no chance, of the lightest blemish, diminishing it’s pure perfectness.

Check out those amazingly perfect labels, whilst imagining in you wildest Motown mirages, there is vinyl to match. The serious about completing Motown will confirm the most frustrating aspect, especially with the first 20 that Motown was essentially a local label, for local people, and the first thing to happen to a Motown 45, was to discard the sleeve, and then party with it.

Flawless, striped Motown Pink were long, long extinct and mostly only exist in dreams..

So unleash some Detroit neighborhood dance music from 1961, hear the talented pianist “Popcorn” Wylie let all hell break loose on that those cowering keys, upstaging Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and who ever else thought himself handy on the “Ole Pianny”. Be prepared for an insane dismantling of Barrett Strong’s huge hit.

Popcorn go completely berserk, pushing the boundaries with astonishing results…. and after all that work and it sold “Nothing!!”

Certainly one of the very rarest of the 1st TEN “pinks”, and may we remind the reader; that not us, nor you will ever encounter a finer copy.. than this vision of purity!

Lada Edmund Jr.

The Larue

Over the last 20 years we have enjoyed some startling Northern Soul classics 45s from all corners of the world, and in that time I’ve not experience anything as exquisite as the 1966 threefold combination only the Japanese seen capable of putting together.

Firstly this Northern soul anthem is RARE no matter what form you seek. Pink USA Demo, a highly coveted NS treasure. The USA Decca stock copy, seldom seen, a vision of Black stockers that hard to beat. Then there’s the Canadian stock copy of stark-black with silver text, harking back to the 50’s in design.

Those Japs in contrast are way ahead of every one. Beautiful brown label with spectacular “Silver metallic” text. Housed in what has to be the most tantalising design of any “Decca” company sleeve on the planet..

and it doesn’t end there the wrap around picture sleeve (gorgeous btw) opens up to reveal the lyrics in Japanese and English..

If anyone needs reminding what Lada Edmund Jr. did to the Wigan Casino congregation circa ‘73 / ‘74 click the soundfile and unleash Japanese precision mastering into the world’s unparalleled vinyl quality..

Yes, without question the most exquisitely package example and most elusive piece of of Northern Soul from “Around The World” to ever to land on my desk..

Out Of The " In " Crowd

Calling all innovative Northern Soul DJ’s!

Here’s a Beyond-rare Northern Soul clique-item with a difference, that John Vincent almost single-handed guided into “cult” status..

Oh how much do I adore this record, one of the most-appreciated of all our YouTube posting, standing out above the rest, as it’s tongue-in-cheek individualism instantly alerts the dancefloor. With the cocktail of the brawny-booming-lead vocal, zipping strings, kettle drums, shrill girls cooing a chorus, soaring trumpets, and a Four Seasons clone entering the fray with Frankie Valli-esque presence; leaving you loose-jawed and wondering, what else can there be to add to this minestrone of Sound!

Totally unique Northern Soul crowd-pleaser the John Vincent instantly recognized as the “Monster” he’s made it become..

Damn different, imposing and instant…

LOVE IT also Love this record proven rarity over the last 4 decades, considering every cratedigger in the world, since the mid-60s has dreamed of unearthing any record, with that magical crediting…..

Nightingale

Be very careful - you are about to listen to an Ear-Worm that will take you days to shake out your head. A Jazz dancer with a huge reputation for a very good reason.. it’s totally irresistible and so very hard to find.

This rarity, although enjoying an enviable dance-status, has yet to grace the Northern Soul clubs, being so very hard to find, and the Jazz / Funk / Off The Wall dance venue DJ’s already monopolizing it’s meager availability..

With Latin dancers now riding high on the Northern Soul spectrum, instrumentals back in vogue, I can’t help imagining the response of a stylus drop on this vibrant Jazz dancer… I’m envisaging an electrified dancefloor igniting, to the instantly motivating piano riffs and 100’s of swiveling heads checking out the turntable-cams!

Just like Manny Corchado - Pow Wow - for me this “off-scene dancer” carries all those qualities of dancer-satisfaction, whilst giving the adventurous DJ the chance to drop a spectacular-surprise..

Ramsey Lewis, Cal Tjader, Freddie McCoy have all at some point in time, taken the Northern Soul world by a storm… and in my humble opinion this track beats all of those and is undisputedly, infinitely rarer…

Go click that impressive sound-file, I’m sure you’ll hear, what I hear,

Supremes

Meet The Supremes

an AUTHENTIC REAL DEAL withdrawn “Bar-stool Cover” NOT one of those counterfeit replicas that have littered the internet since the beginning of www. Noting DISCOGS (a whole world of vinyl collecting) sadly lists the track listing of the “Counterfeit Cover” only! Underlining just how darn rare the authentic original cover really is.

Points to look for, to know you have the genuine first album cover, besides the glaringly obvious fact, that it is imperative it comes with the MONO 1962 album label design with the North-States map, marking Chicago, Cleveland as well as Detroit. Red top & bottom Motown logo, red star over the “W” not the “O” of the later enduring trademark.

Now we’ve stated the obvious, let’s talk about the other not so blatant pointers to check for whilst seeking the real-deal cover.

  1. Front cover the “Gold Necklaces” are sharply defined and look “Gold” as the counterfeit cover these 3 necklaces are blurry and to not resemble “gold” at all. “Gold” is notoriously hard to relicate whilst copying pictures.

The back cover is where the counterfeiters, made an irretrievable error. When they somehow acquired the original artwork with the “proposed” track listing. The Counterfeit cover track listing has “The Boy That Got Away” as track 2 side two, which never appeared on the released album, replaced by “Let Me Go The Right Way” see correct track list on back of the authentic cover.

If your back cover lists “The Boy That Got Away” you will more than likely, have the cover matched up with the “Michigan Map “later STEREO Motown label design and those “fuzzy” gold necklaces hanging around the girls necks on the front cover.

Out in the “field” the likelihood of being able to compare the print definitions is pretty remote, but sitting here today with both the “Fake” and the “Genuine” on my desk, you don’t even require a second glance to spot the counterfeit.

Before you today is the 100% completely genuine but withdrawn “Bar Stool” cover, flashing those seldom seen “Full Map” design labels at you. Correct track listing, and shimmering gold jewelry. THE REAL DEAL!

Avoid at all costs the “Bar Stool” cover listing “The Boy That Got Away” as the second track, side two. This sleeve never went into production, well at least not until it was sneaked out of Hitsvilles back-door and off to your friendly printers. To be matched up with later releases of album.

We have of course encountered fake covers matched with original labels, but that is not an easy task to marry up, in fact ridiculously difficult task.

If you wanna own the genuine article and very few collectors do.

Here’s a rare chance to conquer one of Motown collecting’s most difficult challenges.

Even though the vinyl surfaces are marked, but play well. We all know that is not where the value of this piece lies. This Motown “endangered Species” the monetary-worth is in the label and even more value in the insanely-rare authentic 1963 WITHDRAWN cover.

Willie Horton

Detroit Is Happening

It’s Holland - Dozier - Holland again, guiding Baseball Giant Willie Horton through a 1967 unissued 45, made especially to promote the City Of Detroit. Utilizing the Supremes current hit “The Happening” as the backdrop to Willie Horton’s rich vocal, enticing you to call 224-6440, to see what’s “Happening” in the Motor City this summer.

Unlike this month’s Christine Schumacher’s offering of perfection, this rare disc has surface marks (listen carefull to the soundfile provided), but just like Ms Schumacher, Willie Horton’s solitary outing onto vinyl is RARE! and a crucial piece of the Motown vinyl-jigsaw.

Top side id the Full recording, the flip features two radio advert edits to be inserted into the local Radio programming.

Willie Horton turned down numerous offers to record as his larger than life voice filled the airways that summer. A good decision by Willie to concentrate on his game, as in 1968 Willie Horton had his best ever personal season, whilst winning the World Series with his hometown team Detroit Tigers.

Essential Motown (and baseball) collecting at it’s most challenging..

I Cried A Million Tears

Rare Virginia FUNKER perfect for the Northern Soul all-niter, as well as any Rare Funk soiree.

Sitting in the that same acutely-harsh category as World Column, Rudy Love etc. This much rarer example of that style, benefits from a utterly ferocious snarling lead vocal “Jimmy Moore” (of Church Street Sally _ Fame) again bludgeoning full-on honkin’ horns, as this potent musical-cocktail pummels all that stands in it’s way.

This “Rockmasters” S.P.Q.R. session could not be any more destructive or more convincing, it just requires a DJ with the same size of “bollocks” as it’s creator, Frank Guida; to let lose this off-the-scale 60’s Northern Soul Funker.

After cutting his career under Carl Davis as a valued member of The Visitors of Dakar Records, Chicago. Eugene took his talents home to Kansas City, to craft one of the most highly-charged Soulful-dance recording of the 70s.

From the first note, Eugene’s elastic-vocal supported by a full vocal-group (Essence Of Love) turns in a foot-to-the-floor, a tank sapping breakneck dancer enriched with strings, bass-guitar dance-rhythms and penetrating trumpets and electric drum whacks.. the results is a total-dance experience from the streets of K.C. Original STOCK copy is fine clean condition, a few light marks, but as you can hear, it plays without even a murmur on the stylus, two clean labels, making this a real beauty.

To hear more of Mr. Smiley’s silky voice the refined vocal-group ballad will underline why this man made an enviable name for himself in Chicago..

Hard to find, especially in this pure condition.

Lost In The City / When A Boy Loves A Girl

RARE not only the predecessor to the highly regarded “Majors” on Big Three the “Gold” label release you only occasionally see for sale, but this first press is adorned with a top-die-for flipside; a “Low Rider” style vocal-harmony masterpiece of Chicago Soul that sits at the top of it’s genre not only in rarity but quality too.

First let’s talk about the “Northern Soul” side, a JERHART recording giving up compelling vocal group NS written & produced by the gifted Bob Lee who captures the mood of the streets in 1965. A fine feelgood mid-tempo you can’t help but want to dance to, so very easy-going Northern Soul.

Flip it over and here lies the real value. An exquisite, seamless Sweet Soul ballad drenched in all the qualities to stand out in a crowd. Cool, strolling intro showcases a comfortable effortless lead sauntering through the lyrics on a wave of creamy vocals, cradling his emotion with a blanket of seamless coos, oohs and icing falsetto implants..

Total KILLER! No wonder so many are currently chasing this 45, as it is the very pinnacle of that most difficult of techniques..

In short, two proper tunes one seldom encountered disc..

Willie Kendricks

Change Your Ways / What's That On Your Finger

A MANSHIP MINT !! - unplayed until those two unparalleled Pied Piper delights were gleaned from it’s pristine grooves.

As with The Vibrations- ‘Cause your Mine -. Willie Kendricks - Change Your Ways - was first presented to the British All-Niter congregation from a rare 1969 UK LP “Just A Little Bit Of Soul”; now there was an understatement, as the same LP gave the UK NS Jock the chance to spin - The Exciters - Blowing Up My Mind - also both of which rose to become Northern Soul leviathans in the early 70s.

Both tunes took the UK Northern Soul scene by a storm, with 45’s being discovered slightly later. But it was these album discoveries that fuelled the desire to find out what other USA Soul delights were out there.

But that was only part of the story, as the years rolled by, the Pied Piper become the NS benchmark that new rarities go measured by. After Wigan Casino came Stafford Top Of The World, where the innovative DJ line up started to drop the pace of what was acceptable to the Northern Soul dancers.

Take a bow whoever was the first DJ to flip-over this slice of Pied Piper genius revealing a Detroit Masterpiece that still remains in my personal TOP 10 Soul recordings of all time, today.

The absolute summit of all the Northern Soul strollers that now frequent the turntables to appreciative audiences. Not many records make me feel the way “What’s That On Your Finger” feels every time it greets my ears.. Detroit collides with New York with a truly spectacular result.

To own this 45 in MINT condition should be every serious NS collectors aim. It was being saved for our MANSHIP MINTS at Christmas campaign but the flipside label has two minuscule age-freckles.. squint at scan.

Surely, Northern Soul collecting cannot be more satisfying, seeing this gorgeousness drop threw the letterbox.!

Coby Dijon

Locked In The Arms Of Love

One of the most challenging aspects of record collecting, in the relentless accumulation of British release Soul vinyl, which encompasses upbeat NS pop, Belgium style Popcorn, Jazz, R&B etc. The important guidelines for the British vinyl zealot is condition, condition, condition!

So in the quest of making our weekly listings, interesting, fresh and topical, we are pleased this week to list a most-unusual 45, not only rare in the extreme, but also perfect!

This recording has been a wanted 45 on “The Popcorn” scene & to some extent the New York “Island” community. It’s release on USA Epic is not super-rare at all, but in this form, the 1958 UK DEMO release certainly is, and we doubt very few dedicated “British” collectors own a copy..

Sitting outside the “norm”, this 45 gives up “Popcon” by the tub full.. Big production, jazzy, lilting Beat Ballad that will, no matter how you resist it (I tried) it will sneak up on you, wriggle it’s way under your skin.. as that mix of China-cowboy movie theme and Roy Hamiltonesque vocal, it will pull you in..

If like many dedicated British collector, you too have hit the brick-wall of upgrading or falling back into the 50’s R&B to keep your letterbox flapping..

Coby Dijon should certainly now be on your radar..

An insanely RARE 1958 DEMO! and still in “as new” condition, inside birth-sleeve. It cannot get any better than this and we bet you’ve already clicked the soundfile again, wondering why this weirdness is actually getting to you…

PROMO PERFECTION - POPCORN AFFECTION awaits… So in the quest of making our weekly listings interesting fresh and topical, we are pleased this week to list a most-unusual 45, and rare in the extreme as this 1958 UK DEMO release.

Sam Nesbit

Chase Those Clouds Away / Black Mother Goose

Crazy about Crossover - well here is one, to definitely go “crazy” about!

So very delicious mid-tempo dance-groove, with the bonus of punchy Northern Soul on the flip.

Both sides give up two differing genres but both are soaked in quality; as the sadly under-employed Sam Nesbit flexes his muscular vocal through two fine Soulful productions.

The side we lead with epitomizes the “Crossover” sound, with it’s silky effortless approach which Sam’s consummate style glides through, befitting from Lou Stallman’s infectious arrangement.

Flip it over to be awoken by a former Dave Godin rave which had every old-school Soul-Boy scurrying around trying to find a copy, back in 1971/72 as Dave had perhaps an exclusive 45 at the time. His enthusiastic and highly descriptive review in Blues & Soul made it a must find!

Today, with “Chase Those Clouds Away” hitting every right note in the “Crossover” fans brain, this 45 has again become a - “must find”

Two great sides, one elusive disc.

Johnny Howard

The Chase Is On / I Miss My Lady

What a stunning launch for Dakar’s “BASHIE” label, as Tom Tom Washington & Willie Henderson inject so “get-up-and-go” into The Artistics rather pedestrian 1967 original take.

Marvin Smith, Billy Butler & Carl Smith lyric were begging for an inspired uplift. So bring in the tricky plectrum, the click-clacking Bongos, a tsunami of strings & horns and those crucial cooing girls, and a lead vocal sounding every pitch as impressive as Billy Butler himself..

The pace is fixed in cruise control and the studio throws in every morsel of Soul it can muster into one of Northern Soul most inspired remakes.. which Ginger Taylor took from it’s comfortable snooze into a huge Northern Soul awakening as the 45 went absolutely massive a couple of years back..

Today it still has the same electrifying effect every time it’s dropped… with no better way to drop the stylus, but on flawless VINYL that is a whisker from a MANSHIP MINT!

Top drawer Northern Soul that just shimmers with everything we adore about the sound.. in the finest possible condition.

Something's Bad / Tell Her Lies

For those of you utterly distraught at missing a recent listing of this Grail at auction … with condition meticulously described as..quote. “Visual grade: VG-, the end of the record has an internal “spider” crack with several hairlines that radiate out, causes heavy popping towards the end of both sides, may cause skipping forward or sticking on some turntables, very slight storage warp DNAP, light label wear, prominent tearing on B-side label, light staining on B-side label”..

But you’re saved from a life of pain, as here’s a copy with NONE of those flaws whatsoever, just a few surface marks, check out the TWO full sound files of the highly sought after Northern Soul Grail.. free of cracks, fade, warps or any other serious flaw that would make you cry upon introducing it to the turntable..

Stalking those real-deal Northern Soul Holy Grails, you will know this title has been a frustrating “impossible” to find flawless, this in our experience is as good as it gets.

Some surface marks, two neat clean labels, no writing or tears, no warps of any degree, very tiny “lip” detectable with by running fingertips along the circumference of the run in groove, so minuscule we only saw it after forensic inspection.

CHECK those two mighty SOUNDFILES, what you hear is exactly what you get. Two magical examples of vocal-group Northern Soul dancefloor igniters.

Do not pass by.. we don’t expect this treasure is gonna surface again any time soon..

Magnetics

Lady In Green / Heart You're Made Of Stone

A beyond fantasy - Northern Soul Holy Grail - in delusional condition, with maybe a mirage of a Columbia NOT FOR SALE PROMOTION COPY badge.

Am I Dreaming?

This is the very summit Northern Soul collecting, encapsulating everything that sets a wondrous tune above a great one!

With not even the merest attempt at commercialism, The Magnetics shun all the Detroit influences of the era and serve us a delicacy from those fertile streets of Soul. Not a single word, lyric, line or musical note attempts to woo the general public. This disc gives up not one but two “from-the-heart” neighborhood sessions showcasing off-the-scale, male vocal group Northern Soul.

The proven rarity is already extreme, but this is magnified by the quite some factor when you take into account the astonishing unblemished condition of the two playing surfaces and the pristine full colour yellow labels… just distilled gorgeousness.

It is the very finest copy, of the few examples I’ve personally encountered, and I doubt very much if I’ll see another comparable one.

Whether for investment or to eventually satisfy your “Vinyl-Bucket-List”, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an unparalleled Northern Soul “Grail” in unprecedented condition.

Mary Wells

He's A Lover / I'm Learnin'

Old School British Soul vinyl collectors will unanimously confirm this 1965 British release, in it’s glorious Red & White DEMO form is one of the most-elusive of all those highly coveted Stateside “Red & White’s”.

With no “Discogs” listing and only one untidy “VG” this century appearing on “Popsike”, confirmation of it’s undeniable real-rarity, is only a couple of clicks away.

Leo Porter & Ronnie Miller “Do Motown” crafting a most beautifully Soulful-stroller with Mary’s consummately sugary voice, pouting the lyrics so sweetly. Complete with a sultry sax break, this recording, dare I say matches and even surpasses some of her “Hitsville” work; and why wouldn’t it, when the 20th Century’s big machine, employed former Motown writer/producer Robert Bateman to oversee the proceedings as the “Film-makers” expected to steal Motown’s chart-domination as well as their leading lady..

None of that forecasted success happened, as justice was served on the “Big Boys” as all Mary’s 20th Century 7 x 45s clocked up disappointing sales. Underlining that the “Motown-Machine” was more than just stand-out music. Mr. Gordy & Co. were also skilled at sales, promotion, airplay, artist exposure and all the things that create chart-success.

Some may say, 20th Century’s audacious move to “steal” Motown’s No. 1 gal, deserved to fail. As their overblown promises to Mary also failed to materialize, leaving this chapter of career decision making, sadly a regrettable one for both parties.

A bemusing life-changing episode as the majority of Mary’s releases for “Fox” were absolutely brilliant, capturing the very essence of the “Detroit-girl-sound” completlye, showcased on the flipside “I’m Learning”, when Bob Bateman even introduces a “Mike Terry” inspired burping saxophone into the proceedings, perfect “Northern Soul”.

Before you today, is this double-helping of Motown-cloning in it’s ultra rarest form. Two records saturated in “Motown” influences, but suffering the consequences of leaving the “family” for pastures that at first looked so much “greener” .. a very apt colour, all round, for this musical-migration.

In 1966 Garnet had already gathered up a huge MOD & University following from his jaw-dropping stage performances through the UK hitting University Gigs and those burgeoning all-night amphetamine fuel Soul clubs as every major British city gave Saturday night home to the MOD movement.

This is considered his finest album of the three released by the demand he had created. Liberally littered with stand-out tunes..we sound-filed 1/2 the tracks to give you some idea, why this 1966 UK album is held in such high regard.

Thompson Brothers

You Brought Love Into My Life

This 45 does not after 36 years of a Scarlet Pimpernel existence need to prove it’s insanely annoying rarity.. Hey, those Frenchies were convinced they were gonna catch him, and they never did. I’m sure those noted Rare-Soul Dj’s may have considered leaving a tiny flower spinning on the decks, as they gloriously finish their set with a “Thompson Brothers” but DJ’s who own a copy to play are almost as rare as the disc itself..

We were all guilty, when it broke into the rare-soul scene mid-80s that this disc would be moderately easy to find.. boy how wrong can you be? I unashamedly admit I’ve never plucked a copy out in the “wilds”. I’ve actually had to trade my ass off, to acquire the sparse one or two that have appeared on auction over the last 18 years..or more..

So now we have dispelled the myth of “finding” a copy, let us unleash this precocious Philadelphian upon you, and be prepared for Philly at it’s finest, as David Morris yet again delivers it BIG!

Flutes, string, harmony vocals straight from Heaven itself, a light growl on the vocal chords are the perfect contrast to the sweetness to the backing voices and lush orchestra..

"singin'" Sammy Ward & Sherri Taylor

Oh Lover / That's Why I Love You So Much

In the last 5 years the chances of finding rare Soul 45s in flawless condition has plummeted to such remoteness, many consider buying “scratchy” discs a now acceptable hazard of vinyl addiction.. .

This listing for those Motown Collectors who appreciate the value of a flawless 55 years old, understanding the insurmountable task of locating such perfection…

This 1961 striped “Pinkie” is pristine..check those two eye-poppin’ scans.

You may be also noting this listing is the rare longer title of “OH LOVER” and the sought after “H-55539 fm mix”, of course Motown 1004 was usually credited with Sherri Taylor coming before Sing Sammy Ward. Deadwax reveals Delta # 36980 with a Bell Sound stamping, with faultless vinyl before it.

Well that review has notified the OCD Motown junkie…now what about those many Northern Soul R&B dedicated DJs? Do you care to own the rarer release with the H-55539 mix resounding perfect fidelity off the stylus… or are you happy for crimey graffiti covered labels and snap, crackle, pop vg- playing surfaces…

I got a feeling the dedicated Motown hunter-gatherer, may come out on top with this tempter…but those Jocks are becoming so discerning of late, since the turntable cams have become an interesting addition to Soul-Nights.

Gary Sole

Holdin' On

Gary Gaspard’s lone release for Traci Borges prolific Louisiana team, gave birth to the label’s most wanted 45. After years of Northern Soul adulation and somehow managing to avoid the clutches of the NS bootleggers, even though this “drop” without fail, detonates the room.

The fusion of his nasalistic vocal, honkin’ horns and the unrelenting percussion makes for Northern Soul dancefloor perfection. As proven by an erupting Rugby, Benn Hall dancefloor every time Gary “Soo-Lay” takes stage when Phil Shields drops the arm.

“Gaspard’s” distinctive voice is memorably off-beat, whilst the brass section serves up a flawless display of mid-tempo blasts, that make this an ear-worm, one of those “Take Home In Your Head” tunes that stays there all week… as you recover from one of the World’s most-vibrant Northern Soul all-niters.

The flawless dancer, at just the right pace get everybody on the floor. Absorbing Northern Soul no one seems to get tired of hearing… but heard within the confines of a big dancefloor, potent sound-system and shoulder to shoulder dancing this record is a different animal, in the flesh!

Before you are two perfect labels, vinyl that suggests a past life of storage..

I'm So Glad (i Found You) / Where Are You

The very rare FIRST label way before it’s brief release on Brunswick, which over the years has also proved a challenging disc to acquire..

But that is only 1/2 the story, as this double helping of Philly Northern Soul is more than rare in anything above vg condition and when it is witnessed, the labels are invariably defaced..

When you’re stalking those hard to acquire 1st. labels it is obviously crucial, that the labels are as near perfect as possible.

When it was discovered in the the early 70s, it was an instant all-niter favourite, having all those essential ingredients required to incinerate the early 70’s Northern Soul dancefloor. Becoming a firm “Torch” favourite, triggering a Brunswick “Gold” label re-issue for “Select-A-Disc” to feed the collectors demand. Even those 1973 2nd presses are seldom seen on the market.

So here’s easily the rarest form of this highly regarded Northern Soul dancer. Which today with the worldwide explosion in interest for 60s / 70s “Sweet Soul” ballads, the flipside, “Where Are You” ticks all the boxes, not only rarity! Considered one of the Sweet Soul !”Grails” with the Northern soul interest making it doubly hard to secure..

Two great sides, wanted by two different by burgeoning Rare Soul factions. In fine clean condition, vinyl has a few mild surface marks, a stylus skate, two labels are “as good as it gets” …

Devotees of Sweet Soul, expect some competition from that “pesky” Northern Soul  gang.

But It's Alright / Boogaloo Baby

RARE PROMO COPY! …complete with the Calla promo lyric with music sheet..

An offering for those of you seeking a little extra bonus of provenance whilst collecting elusive PROMO copies of the Northern Soul classics!

This FIRST PRESS 1966 USA offers two classic Twisted Wheel anthems back to back. The thumpin’ top side caused such a stir, with J. J.’s booming vocal out-facing the banging brass and relentless guitar rhythms, it became an instant favourite when first played in this country on it’s too quickly deleted UK Polydor release. But Warner Bros were on hand to swiftly reissue, feeding the demand and sparking a successful 1967 British Tour for The Big man from New York.

This is perhaps J. J.’s best loved NS dancer; with this combination as a Promo complete with lyric sheet will tempt the old-school Niter-Boys, eyeing this as a more desirable acquisition, even out stripping the need for that elusive British Polydor release..

Personally I just adore these little “extras” the promo mailshot can sometimes comes up with.

Love Now Pay Later / Tighten Up Your Games

Chicago again!

This time to offer up a sleeper with double attraction, two total Northern Soul thumpers as the pairing of Joshie Jo Armstead & Doc Oliver collaboration, throws out a couple of real-deal dancers.

It is rather bemusing the lead side has not reached up into the heady-heights of Northern Soul most-wanted, as it is saturated in all te characteristics that made Stafford’s Top Of The World all-niter the groundbreaking club it was; Haunting but powerful, defiant but Soulful. Drenched in Honkin’-Horns attacked by a seasoned vocal.. it has everything require for the Big-Ticket including frustrating elusiveness whilst pursuing ownership ..

Flip it over, to witness Joshie Jo Armstead dueling with Lee Shot for position of the lead, a manic duet with two monster vocals whacking out frantic foot-to-the -floor Northern Soul the head-spin-back-droppers will lovingly relate to..

But that doesn’t make the reason “Love Now Pay Later On” has not been featured in NS DJ sets anywhere nearly enough.. what a crime..

J. J. Jackson

Along With The Cooking Sound Of:

It is an undisputed fact, you are gazing at one of the very rarest Soul albums ever released in Britain. Even though in 1967 J. J. was appearing in many British all night Soul clubs. The small UK label “Strike” failed miserably with promotion, with this knockout album slipping into British Soul collecting folklore, as one of the very least seen of all those long-players that hit the market, trying to quench the thirst from Soul music among the Brit-MOD community. But that movement was firmly fixed on the 7” 45 as their choice of collecting.

I will never forget as a 14 year old social-outcast from anything remotely adult, a van pulling up next to our footy gang one Saturday night, to ask the way to “The Drill Hall” the local hang out that booked some fantastic acts for the provincial MODS to see. Chris Farlowe, Felice Taylor, and J. J. Jackson were in my head when we gave them the way to “The Drill Hall” the front seat passenger asked who was playing, I said J. J. Jackson.. a more delighted van full of MODS you couldn’t have imagined, as their overloaded mid-50’s Ford Thames Van chugged off in a cloud of fumes..

I stayed away from the Town-center for quite some while on Saturday’s, just in case we bumped into those MODS, as of couirse J. J. Jackson was not playing..

But you would think, with the MOD following this Bronx-born Soul man enjoyed, along with his reputation for a sending Soul-crowds into a frenzy, this album would have been a seller. But no, it sold virtually nothing and today stands as one of the UK’s most elusive of platters..

Now here’s the astonishing thing.. I think the resistance of slipping out of the poly-lined inner sleeve, and the pristine playing surfaces that greeted me, indicated not only MINT / MINT but also maybe unplayed until we captured J. J.‘s unbridled enthusiasm with the impressive soundfile attached..

This LP for me, catapults me back to Saturday evening pretending to be “The Doog” The great Derek Doogan, as I side-stepped Jeff Bailey with a swivel of the hips, to slip the 1/2 pumped up (stolen from school) leather Football just inside the sleeve of Ian Newham’s cardigan used as one of the goalposts…reflecting on good-times and the only knowledge I had of J. J. Jackson, was eavesdropping conversations in the Double 5 coffee bar..

This album evokes visions of that most-wonderful of era’s, growing up in the 60’s impatient to be old enough to slip into the “Drill Hall” one dark night ..
