I Really Really Love You

A Northern Soul defibrillator..

Have you ever sat at work, at home or in the car and a tune comes on and your begging to be somewhere you can dance.. It ain’t often I’m moved to a NS gig.. but this tune has the power to resuscitate, everyone’s fading faculties

Utterly crucial Crossover Northern Soul dancer featuring a call & answer duet of the most convincing voices you could ever wish to encounter.. both give up on-your-knees beseeching performances, peppering the blanket of horns, shrill vocal-group backing with real-soul from the gut!

Bobb Nunn’s Buffalo company was perhaps a Soul-Oasis up there in the outer most reaches of New York state.. but wow did him and his team carve some truly jaw-dropping sessions…

Don’t ‘bout you, staff have left the building and I’m having a dance…to Consummate-Crossover..

Lee Jennings

Going And Get It (bring It To You) / Hutmen

FUNK Fanciers & Detroit Doyens will be equally riveted to this rarely seen snarling endangered Michigan species, on one of Motor City best-loved independent labels.

Bruce Scott & Sonny Marshall collaborate to carve out a guttural slab of Northern Soul - FUNK infused dance; right in-step with today’s favoured styles.

After drooling of the elaborate label design (so much more intricate than the plain yellow), then check out that distinguish Lee Jennings vocal as he “Out Pickett’s The Wicked Man himself” strutting his bulldozing vocal through a sea bass guitar, horns and a competing tortured screaming sax.

Funky but not too Funky, in your face Northern Soul that stops just short of “too much” attitude! It has of course been an highly regarded collectors piece for Motor City vinyl addicts and the flipside instrumental is considered a Deep Funker.. the vocal version would fit perfectly into the In-Vogue preferences of the cutting-edge turntable drops.

Condition is flawless btw.

Very highly regarded Texas Northern Soul rarity - that never comes to market!

Dark and moody lament of a man without love! Balance up by some fabulous horn support and a whirling hammond adding layer after layer of sympathetic despair to the already despairing lead vocal.

Jive Five

You're A Puzzle / Ha Ha

Black STOCK copy junkies - here’s one that seldom comes to market..

With the bonus of being one of the very few Wigan Casino spins that has never been reissued, bootlegged or comp’d to death. A relentless Northern Soul stomper dripping with all the vocal-group prowess we’ve come to love over the decades.

Considering this is “Key To My Happiness” quality, I’m surprised at how little you hear it when out and about - it’s a PROPER-DANCEFLOOR-PERSUADER …that would follow The Charades on deck 2, just perfectly.

I particularly like two things about Otis Pollard’s construction of the frantic tune. Totally adore the discreet “Bass” male-vocals timely Doo-Wah interuptions at exactly the right moment, then just as the production reaches it’s summit, a bank of strings arrive to elevate the session even higher - then Mr. Pollard summons up a mountain of brass towards the end.. this man was one of New York’s most talented studio-icians and with Richard Fisher’s gravel-coated beseeching vocal leading.. all is complete..

UTTERLY ON THE MONEY - NORTHERN SOUL - AT IT’S BEST

as if that is not more than enough for you to urgently seek ownership the damn B-Side, maybe down a pace or two - but is every note as good..

But then again I am unashamedly bias, a hopeless sucker for the vocal group Northern Soul juggernauts tearing up the track. And of course those bold black labels encased inside vintage company sleeves..so very attractive.

Bobby Wisdom

Handwriting On The Wall / The Girl I Call My Baby

RAREST OF THE RARE and make no mistake.

Easily Anthony C.Renfro’s hardest to acquire 45, of his many Northern Soul contributions and I think his best!

A totally uplifting “impossible” benefiting from a typically feelgood “Renfro” approach.. Burping saxophone leads the way for the at ease vocal of the mysterious Bobby Wisdom to glide through a full orchestra arrangement crafting scintillating Northern Soul with every note!

Stabbing horns, rattling drums drive this dancer at a perfect pace for the dancers, our opinion is if this wasn’t so God-damn-rare, this beauty is flawless Top 500 material.

Flip it over for an urgently constructed forceful stomper that most will never have heard before, certainly worth more than a cursory ear, as Bobby squeal and screams his way through this relentless pumping production .

TWO GREAT SIDES validating Anthony C. Renfro once again as one of Los Angeles’s major Northern Soul creator. This is only our SECOND copy of this 45 is fully 45 years of messing around with records.. does NS collecting get any rarer than that?

Pearl Dowell

Good Things / It's All Over

A totally pristine ORIGINAL first press of this mighty Sister-Funker.. with an overlooked Northern Soul delight on the flip.

Let’s consider the topside first, a Frank Williams & Willie Beaver Hale collaboration full of attitude and drive! Sister-Pearl’s vocal weaves its way through a flood of blaring horns, some classy Beaver Hale guitar licks and a totally insane sax-break as “The Rocketeers” blown themselves off the scale of Miami Funk with a pull-out-all-the-stops back-up.

This side is rightly considered one of the truly great Sister-Funk sessions; Raw, spontaneous and free-style with Miss Dowell never faltering in her task of matching her instrumental support.

Second side is a real-Northern Soul gem, sadly bypassed in the early part of the century as the Deep-Funk monopolized the other side. “It’s All Over” borrows heavily from “I Can’t Wait Until I See My Baby’s Face” but injecting a little more punch with the horns again dominant. A mid-tempo NS stroller saturated in Soul which Pearl convinces with her skilled vocal delivery..

surely “It’s All Over” will have it day on the NS circuit..it would be a vinyl-crime if it didn’t..

Two great sides!!! one elusive disc.

I'm Coming Over / If You Love Me

REAL DEAL NORTHERN SOUL IN IT’S RAREST FORM! an East Coast Northern Soul Holy Grail!!

To still hold it’s “impossible” reputation after what must now be near 45 years of relentless searching by every Northern Soul collector/dealer/fan on Planet Earth, solidly validates this 45 as an undisputed authentic Northern Soul Grail.

Personally, still after decades of me dreaming of “finding” a copy I have yet to encounter this Blue-Ghost in”The Wild”, it is what I would grade as Unicorn-Rare!

Only ever played by the very top-NS-jocks over the years consequently achieving a “Buy Before I Die” status. Click the soundfile to be catapulted back to a time when “One-Offs” would tease to the point of irritation and the smug looks the DJ wore as the needle dropped would stay in your mind all week…. as the green-eyed monster refused to sleep.

A record to be proud of owning - do not pass by, another may be more than a lifetime away.

Melvin Davis

It's No News / Wedding Bells

two Detroit Northern Soul icons make a date to craft the beginnings of their illustrious careers. Dave Hamilton (writer producer of great renown) guides Melvin Davis Motor City Soul-God, there can be only one outcome.

Killer Motor City Northern Soul with that special “magic” ingredient called “Flare”.

Take a listen to Melvin’s rarest 45 and consequently least heard NS offering. Take time for this “Popcorn-Shaker” to enter your life as it’s unique “Mambo” influenced arrangement collides with “Soul” and produces perfect “Popcorn” that is so very right for today’s dancefloor.

This 45s rarity is unquestionable as is we feel it’s potential for second breath under the guidance of a DJ who thinks past the “NS Obvious”.

Shimmering with potential to surprise and delight the dancefloor.

Flipside again bristles with cocktail of “Latin, Mambo, Soul” that demands your attention especially when Melvin pushes the boundaries with his squealing vocals. Then a “snake-charming” rap break.. well this side is neary as good.

Dave Hamilton you certainly know how to “do-it-up-right!”

Dell Randle

The Monkey And The Beatles

As the term “Tittyshaker” starts to create an underground following on the internet, the movement searches for more and more previously overlooked 50’s/60s dance-exotica gems.

An addictive genre that once you dip your toe in, you will before long be imagining swimming in a deep pool of well endowed Mama’s, dancing and shaking their wares up close and intimate.

This example is INSANELY RARE Bay Area San Francisco off-the-wall R&B Hammond instrumental that will have you seeking more of the style.

Dell is an unsung talent who did very obscure but very impressive work with that mysterious Northern Soul contributor Othello Robertson. Here he is in a different mood, attacking the keyboard whipping up a storm as he name-checking “Major Lance” whilst spanking out a “Do What You Wanna Do” rhythm… The Monkey, Wobble, Shake, Twist, Stroll…

This is dance craze at it’s most-convincing…

Otis Redding

Otis Redding - Song Book

I was occasionally attending the King Edward IIV Upper School in 1967, December of that year I remember Danny Reynolds (a schoolboy MOD with rebellious tendencies) being thoroughly downhearted one morning as he brought to school the news that Otis Redding had been killed in a plane crash. We all mourned the rest of the day, even those long haired Gimpy’s into Pink Floyd shared our grief.

“Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay” was the last song Otis wrote, in the UK it became a huge hit, partly to his popularity with The MODS as their Soul idol, partly because it was such a stand-out Deep Soul recording.

In the USA, it entered the history books, as the first posthumous #1 hit and Otis’s only #1 hit. In the UK it just missed out on the top spot, but is considered by all in Britain as THE classic Otis anthem.

Before you today is a RARE 24 page “Otis Song Book” printed in 1968 by West Central Printing London for TEE PEE MUSIC LTD.

Includes not only the ultra-poignant lyrics of “”Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay” But all lyrics & music for “My Sweet Lorene”, “Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa” “Knock On Wood” “New Years Resolution” “Ooh Carla, Ooh Otis” “When Something Wrong With My Baby” plus THREE full page black & White Otis action pictures.

Apart from a mild “age browning” of the inside pages; this Song Book is free of tears, stains, writing or sticker marks.. a so very seldom encountered Historical piece that many may be tempted to split and frame for a unique WOW effect on the walls of their home.. tempting indeed.

Authentic R&b

British Album collecting at its most challenging!

An album lifting the greatest 60s recordings from the EXCELLO Catalogue. The track listing reads like “Who’s Who” of Southern R&B. As the selected soundfile reveals with distilled snarling exclusively male listing.

Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, Jimmy Anderson, Lonesome Sundown, Whispering Smith, Leroy Washington, Silas Hogan’s work brought to an unsuspecting British public in 1963. It of course sold nothing on release and consequently today is one of the rarest UK compilations.

There are some light blemishes on the vinyl surfaces, but I’ve enjoyed this rarity in it’s entirety playing it from start to finish, plays perfectly and to be honest after hearing it, I was so tempted to make it a keeper.

1963 British press and Dog-RARE, not a bad track on it! Sleeve notes by Guy Stevens… R&B does not get any more collectable.

Soul Set

Will You Ever Learn

Parallel Universes with an appreciation for Soul Music!

Strange as it may seem, whilst during the 60s Britain’s Twisted Wheel faithful were building, what in the future was going to become a worldwide cult. In fact the biggest underground music movement, perhaps of all time.

Little did these pioneers of our music know, there was a parallel universe, the other side of the Pond in the Carolinas; Soul was blossoming into not only the sound for the “white” teenagers to dance to, it was also the music to produce and sing live and perform as the “Motown” sound was the inspiration for white group mimicking. And boy, did they do it well.

In this case the “Soul Set” from deep in the backwoods of North Carolinas emerged from the small town enthusiasm for “Soul”. This 45 from Cullowhee, N.C. epitomizes the sound that the Northern Soul generation would take to their hearts, and the serious UK collectors would vigorously pursue.

Most of this style spawn from tiny pockets of “soul” awareness inevitably leading to minuscule pressing runs and future rarity. But serving the British scene with a plethora of Northern Soul rarities to consider.

This is one Premier examples, not just with it’s undisputed rarity but with a flipside that is every note as good as the a-side.. which shimmers with intense eagerness especially on the solo Sax breaks that are truly stand-out.

Silly rare and offering not one but two Northern Soul slayers.

Vinyl on this NS Trophy has some light surface marks but as you can hear plays clean, light writing on flip, and a repaired tear (see scan)

Four Corners

Mad About The Girl / Don't Send Me Away

A silly-Rare Cincinnati street-level D.I.Y. hopeful, offering up two distinguished Sweet Soul strollers.. Both sides constructed by the mysterious Floyd Weatherspoon who put a few tunes together for local Cincinnati Soul band “Platypus” ..these two soulful ballads are beautifull put together.

We lead with the more-syrupy of the two sessions, featuring an ice-cold soaring falsetto spearing the lyrics, within a laid-back dreamy production. Smokey Robinson inspired performance is fully supported by a “Miracles” styled backing team, belying it’s Cincinnati neighborhood roots.

Flip it over and the Soul gets slightly Deeper, as the group change their lead vocalist for a profound delivery, whilst in contrast the backing group harmony takes on a sharper character.

BOTH sides underscore the quality that is strewn on the street corners of every USA major city…Two truly dazzling ballads from a previously unknown group to me, totally impressive, and saturated in SOUL!

Local recordings don’t come any more polished than these two opulent offerings or rarer!

Liar, Liar

A timeless MOD classic in its rarest and most attractive form.

The pull of the Yellow London PROMO copies could hardly be stronger, as this song evokes visions of Brighton Beach 1966 - most-every teenager who even only had a fleeting brush with Britain’s MOD culture will recognize this tune whirling hammond intro the opening for an anthem.

For the vinyl-condition extremist, this copy offers near perfection; it took me some time angling, re-angling the vinyl in strong light to reveal only the merest signs of paper-sleeve contact through the decades.

As you can see the labels are also flaw-free, only the Decca stamped 150 = secondsrunning time on the label (which is hardly a flaw)

A stunning copy Honest!

Broadways

You Just Don't Know / Sweet Heavenly Melody

What is it about the MGM Black stock copy - other than it looking oh so smart in it’s birthday sleeve, or is it maybe because we know MGM rarely skimped on their productions.

I have heard derogatory mumblings about this tune being “Four Seasons” in style - blue-eyed Northern Soul. THINK AGAIN check out the men behind it’s construction.

Charlie Koppelman & Don Rubin are no strangers to the Brill Building styled big production, neither is fellow New Yorker Trade Martin, a name so familiar with the Northern Soul collector, as Trade just had that gift for serving up feelgood NS arrangements.

But this song is stand-out Northern Soul for more reasons than the producers or the well credited arranger.. check out the writers… Drake Hollon wrote songs for Linda Jones, Timothy Wilson, Teri Bryant, Florence Ballad etc.

The co-writer has an even more impressive portfolio cutting his teeth with Motown in the company Eddie Holland. Writing such Northern Soul greats as “Exus Trek” Lenny Curtis - Nothing Can Help you Now…

There is always a reason for the birth of a stand out song no matter what colour the artists skin.. there was a “Dream Team” behind this killer tune. Little wonder the last time we listed it, there was a 6 0’clock scrap to own it’s brilliance!

condition btw is flawless

Out Of Sights

For The Rest Of My Life / You Made Me Beg

Can seriously RARE vocal-group Northern Soul get any more impressive than this legendary 45..

Click the soundfile and prepare to be dazzled..by the all inviting bongo intro, followed by rhythmic dance guitar plucking; then soaring down from way up above is a powerful falsetto… and that’s just the beginning!

The rest is a feast of neighborhood-street-corner Northern Soul that has been a NS Prize since the influential days of “Top Of The World” Stafford where the gradually maturing DJ’s left all those flimsy commercial Pop influenced Northern Soul dance tunes behind them, stubbornly staying on the until then, rarely visited path of “Proper Soul From Local Haunts”

There ain’t a commercial note or word in this creation. Delivered with anguished harmony, steered on a steady raft of horns, guitar and and those thumping instrumental intervals that epitomize the sound of Northern Soul.

PROPER REAL DEAL SOUL created for themselves, their friends, their live performances without even a passing thought of achieving a hit… and that’s exactly how we like it.

A Rare Breed Soul distilled in Cleveland, Ohio.. sipped and relished in England for over 40 years… and still remaining frustratingly Rare!

Mckinley "soul" Mitchell

You are viewing an album very few collectors have ever seen in the flesh and even fewer have ever owned. 1967 Italian release of McKinley Mitchell’s One-derful label sessions.

But this is so much more than just an elusive album. It offers up a lucky 13 recordings from his Chicago, One-Derful studio recordings, with more than one non-7” release track.

Includes the killer Northern Soul/Popcorn session “I’ve Been Wrong”

Five And A Penny

You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies

Every one of you reading these pages will be able to tell your friends, your family or in fact anyone who is willing to listen about your most memorable record find… “finds” are indelible, they are exciting and it’s the one thing that keeps this record-hunting-thing exciting and fresh.

For me my most memorable find, you’d think would be the first copy of Larry Clinton - Wanted in Three States - on a mantelpiece in Orlando, Florida.. whilst moving from a record room full of “Blue Haze” for a bit of fresher air.. but no my most memorable find, I have to go back 3 years earlier, as a gas fitting delinquent-student of Southfields college, Leicester .

Every lunchtime I spent scouring the market stalls, junk shops, record shop bins for SOUL 45s. I was one of 1000’s of tenagers up ad down the country doing it day in day out. An unquenchable thirst, living in the hope of an HMV- Sapphires, a Stateside “Rufus Lumley” or similar … anything to escape from a job I hated, into the fantasy-land of Northern Soul.

One day I struck not GOLD but certainly something better than what I was used to finding, Blue Stax, TMG Hits, Red Atlantic’s, Action an odd Sue or two..

I found the very first known copy of Five & A Penny, having recognised the rather long title, as the Dana Valery currently setting the scene alight. I couldn’t wait to get it home, that 20 minute train journey to Melton Mowbray seemed like a week.. I raced to my 25 Baldocks Lane, bedroom and dropped the stylus on my new acquisition.

I can tell you now, I had never felt anything like it, perhaps not as elating a “The Salvadors” find in Northern Soul (The Movie) but pretty damn close!

I was DJing at “The Stonehouse” on the A1 at the weekend I couldn’t wait to play my different version of the Dana Valery. Poke was well impressed, as were the other Stamford Boys, I even got the nod from “Snowy” of Doncaster fame, that I had indeed found a winner.. I left the club that night all puffed up and pretty pleased with myself..

Unaware of the addiction it would trigger, leading to my dismissal by British Gas, as I dedicated every possible moment to relive those moments of new vinyl discoveries…

So today I’m happily reminiscing, holding a TOTALLY MINT copy of my first ever worthwhile find!!! Yes, Happy…because i never, ever found another…

Return To Spanish Harlem

Latin the Northern Soul flavour of the moment… with no sign of the faithful dining on anything else..

The Ray Barretto’s, Harvey Averne, David Coleman, Bobby Valentin, Larry Harlow are all enjoying unprecedented renaissance at the moment.. and don’t they send great when the DJ spins a run of them..

This example is the rarest of all the above mention and benefits from Mr. Middleton’s monumental vocal and the vibrant skills of band leader Bobby Matos who arranges cyclone of horns, muttering Bongos to compliment that snarling voice. A male vocal support towards the end just “nails it”.

Not quite sure why I’m selling this killer.. I must be having one of those days and endless wrong decisions..

Clarence Jackson

If It Don't Fit Don't Force It / What's So Good To You

We always try and find something for you lone-hunters of the elusive Rare Northern Soul White PROMO copies..

This week, this “Ghost” popped out of the woodwork, and instantly sparked off that “Not seen a copy of this in an age” feeling. And I haven’t, it is after all one of those elusive PROMO presses that very few collectors own.

Like Dave Love Solid Soul, Jimmy Bee on Kimberley, Falcons on Big Wheel not super expensive but PROMO’s you just don’t see come to market…today we are adding Clarence Jackson to that exclusive category of genuinely “impossible” as White Demo’s.

But this listing is so much more, than just RARE. The fabulous flipside “What’s So Good To You” is not on the commoner STOCK copy, which offers you the instrumental take as the flip. Making “What’s So Good To You” an essential Detroit rarity to pursue in it’s own right.

Silly Rare White DEMO with an exclusive flipside, which any and all dedicated Soul collectors will be taking seriously.

Claude Baby Huey

Drifting / Just Won't Belive

California Northern Soul at it most convincing..

There was a busy little Bay Area team that had changes in the line-up but the result was always the same, when Frank Jones, Jesse Osbourne were in the room together usually with Troy Dodds for company, maybe Herbert Campbell would give a hand.. These guys were the heartbeat of San Francisco area neighborhood Soul.

Jesse Osbourne of Ozz and The Spurlings fame, wrote both sides of this 1967 session. Frank Jones of Villa Records and The Magicians fame collaborate to create fabulously moving Soul on both sides.

The top side is a rough snarling mid-tempo dripping in that Stafford “Top Of The World” atmosphere as a sulking horns lazily groan and moan in the background as Baby Huey whiskey-worn vocal tone spits out the despairing lyrics in ]to a moody-malaise of hopelessness.

Dark, moody and totally persuasive Northern Soul from Fog City.

Flip it over a a Deep Soul journey that has it’s followers too…exactly the same components but delivered at a funeral pace with grief-stricken accuracy.

I adore, this style of distilled, no frills from the heart SOUL! On this disc you get two differing styles but each just as authentic as the other.

Proper Soul.. no disputing.

Bid on Mister Bang Bang Man / Don't You Know

Jimmy Reed

Down In Virgnia

WANT SOME ACTION ?

One of Britain’s most desirable labels gives up it’s rarest album.

So few of you have ever seen this super-elusive LP, who actually owns a copy, who knows?

We rarely borrow peoples opinions on any of our Auction listings, but a man who I greatly admire and has possibly “fingered” more pieces of rare Soul vinyl than anyone else in Britain says, Quote.

“Possibly the rarest album on the label. Remember it coming out, not seen a copy in 45 years” When Tony Rounce speaks we all listen…

I’m not sure any opinion from me would enhance it’s mystic, other than validint Tony statement. When I seriously collected this label during the whole of the 70s I completed the 45s and all of the LP’s except two, and this “Jimmy Reed” was one I never acquired.

My first copy for sale - EVER. But that probably counts for not too much, as it has been validated as a stonkin’ rarity by one of the longest serving most dedicated collectors in the British Isles..

Condition by the way is absolute flawless, except for a mild sticker removal scar on the back cover by the white margin in line with the word DOWN..squint you may see it.

Supremes

Manhattan

If you’re a serious Motown collector, you will know you are looking at a world ONE OFF! Orignally an unissued cut produced by Berry Gordy Jr., & Gil Askey intended for inclusion in the Supremes sing “Rodgers & Hart” Album but left off the vinyl album, years later in 1986 the completeness of the 25th. Anniversary CD included “Manhattan”. Then again in 2002 feature on the” Sing Rodgers & Hart” CD.

This recording never reached vinyl during the 60s, making this acetate so very special.

This slice of Motown & Girl-Group history has been in my possession for over 30 years. We acquired it with the same batch of 60 + acteates from Simon Soussan, that inc: The Four tops - Jazz Workshop LP acetate, The Originals - Suspicion, Kim Weston - After The Rain, Marvelettes - Boy From Crosstown etc. etc.

This unique 10” recorded September 1966 at Hitsville studio acetate was not considered Northern Soul and got filed away and sadly forgotten, back in the 80s. Would you believe, that after more than 30 years I’ve just found it, along with a few other unissued 10”ers. from that same haul.

If your committed to the Motown Sound, we believe you may well never see this historical Supremes artifact again.. do not pass by. Motown collecting has never been more-vibrant, with this record’s uniqueness becoming more important as the years roll on and Motown collectors get nearer to the impossible completeness of the task. The real-rare stuff, like this listing, has never been harder to come by.

Major Lance

Investigate / Little Young Lover

Sincerely Major Lance”

I’m not particularly “Big” on autographs but when it’s from a man who, it seems, almost single-handed guided more of Britain’s teenagers into a life of Soul-dance than any other single artist, I’m taking more than a second glance at this autographed single of one of his most popular classics.

Hero-worshiped, goes only part of the way to painting a picture of the effect this man had on the British Soul-congregations of the early 70s. Almost his every recording became a Northern Soul favourite and his “Live” on stage performances still smolder in the minds of those lucky enough to witness it.

Presented here today is “The Major’s” moniker on the a-side label, a perfect clean (seldom seen) picture sleeves, clean label flip and two vinyls giving up two typically dynamic Major Lance Northern Soul recordings..

Crucial piece of NS history - signed at his Kettering Live appearance, which I actually DJ’s at.. ..close up the man was a Messiah with a message..nobody will ever forget.

Nobody But Me

If you were lucky enough to witness from the balcony, this NS classic resounding around the walls of the Wigan Casino at it’s height. You will recall the fascinating vision of a Starling-like display, a murmuration of Soulies in unison somehow missing each other whilst in full flight. This tune instantly ignited a delinquent display of dancefloor euphoria, few other tunes of the time could spark.

You will not need us reminding you. A PROMO of this Northern Soul anthem in this condition, unblemished near perfection, just never comes to market.

The top 500 Northern Soul classics as DEMO’s are either imprisoned in the country’s finest NS collections only to be set free by upgrading or death.

When you own records of this calibre in flawless condition, they are “Keepers” so we advise do not pass by, in fact never pass on a genuine Mint minus PROMO when it comes to the real-deal classics looking like having had “filed-only” life.

This is British collecting …”as good as it gets”

Paula Parfitt

Love Is Wonderful

As near to a Paula Parfitt DEMO as you could ever get to owning. It has been confirmed release date, was indeed 26th. of September 1969 with the “A” written on by BEACON RECORDS.

This 45 is so seldom seen for sale, I was not at all surprised to see it has been fully five years since this Northern Soul British only non-hit NS classic since it has hit these pages.

20 year old Paula’s debut single after leaving British girl-group Jeannie & The Boyfriends, then her manager Micky Clarke got Ms Parfitt a contract with Beacon Records. Which did not lead to stardom, although she had previously appeared on “Candid Camera” Paula’s showbiz career did not progess, and she sadly slid into obscurity.

This copy is a beauty, absolutely no sign of a lifetime without a sleeve, unlike most all copies I’ve encountered over the decades. This copy has beautifully clean looking vinyl, that as you can hear plays perfectly.

Beacon of course, chose the wrong side to promote! As proved when Northern Soul DJ’s like Rick Scott, Nev Wherry acquired copies and quickly lifted Paula Parfitt into the Northern Soul floor-filler catagory, bring her the cult-fame she failed to achieve as Girl-Group Member, TV show or the record contract.

So very popular it was not long before it was bootlegged using the original label as a template. Be careful when purchasing a copy, some have large hole USA style centers, some escaped the “dinking” process and have small holes which have in the past been sold erroneously as originals.

The AUTHENTIC original 1969 British press has the “anti-slip” grips on label perimeter. The bootleg has these anti-slip grips missing. So there is no reason not to easily recognize the authentic UK original…

This is of course the 1969 original before you today..and somewhat unique as I’ve never seen one with the Beacon office release date on before, nice added touch. Remembering the quality condition, makes this disc hard to ignore.

A Little Bit Hurt

We do try every week to make these auction pages interesting, informative and colourful. So we will not hesitate to list the occasional less valuable piece of vinyl, if it has a story to tell.

This Northern Soul top 500 classic came out on several different label designs. This example being particularly attractive but NOT the first original release.

The very first WIP 6009 45 was issued in 1967 and has the Red/Black & Pink round “Eye” middle left hand side on the label.

This variation with the tall WHITE lower case “i” logo left hand side (see scan) is the 1970 2nd. press. British Island only used this styled logo for only a very short time 11 releases + any re-issues from January 1970 to October 1970.

Although this 45 carries the 1967 catalogue number WIP 6009 it was pressed between January & October 1970. But still rarely seen for sale in neat clean condition - we shall swap the cover for the authentic plain wavy-top pink one that matches this date of the release.

The auction is not and never will be just for trophy pieces, it is also a tool for information and interesting reading that brings collectors to the site. We do hope this listing lifts the fog surrounding this issue; of what can only be described as a ripping Northern Soul floor-destroyer.

Tina Turner

We Need An Understanding / Too Many Ties That Bind

The impossible 1963 version NOT to be confused with the 1968 POMPEII 66675 Johnny Northern assisted retake of the same title. Not only is this 45 a more than a 1000 times rarer, it is also a totally different mix to the 100 mph 1968 retake! But still possessing all the power & more..

Tina struts her stuff on a wave of pumping horns that she (as she does) outstrips the arrangement as her vocal peaks and snarls her way to an impressively lengthy sax-break, as the guitar driven dance rhythm relentlessly plucks away.. fabulous Northern Soul from a Queen of the sound.

Deep Soul fans, I cannot even begin to tell you of the soulful quality that lay on the flipside. And I’m sure I’m gonna cause a huge controversy when I dare to suggest it most probably inspired the make-up of the timeless masterpiece “A Change Is Gonna Come” released through RCA in 1964.. the similarities are there for everyone to hear.. Ike Turner’s ballad is a Soulful triumph in it’s own right… did Sam Cooke “borrow” or was it the other way round?

Dates suggest Sam was 2nd .. but hey they probably had coffee together one evening in L.A. and got jamming and they both used scaffolding for what was one of the greatest recordings of the last century..

Wanna hear the original concept - get ready for DEEP SOUL at is Rarerst and DEEP SOUL at it’s most moving.

Take a listen to Tina Turner “Too Many Ties That Bind” and astonishing piece of Deep Soul, that will no doubt spark lively debate.

Soft Touch

Look Up, Look Down / Plenty Action

Wanna hear something very special, a slice of pure Soul Class from the hot-bed of slick Sweet Soul harmony, San Francisco an under estimated spawning ground for high-quality Soul.

Inspired by such gifted groups as The Natural Four, The Ballads etc. Philip Hunt again guides a team towards Soul excellence. Having cut some sublime material with the Diabolics, he travels over the bridge from Oakland to again crafts a seamless journey into Sweet Soul Slumberland.

Swirling strings decorated a sharp lead vocal, later joined by a tortured hairline cracked falsetto and the backing lifts, the strings pulling the whole thing together, this is Sweet Soul at it’s most memorable.

Those of you, who like a bit of attitude from there man-time will enjoy the Norman Whitfield inspired FUNK infused stroller on the flip. Full of competitive banter, as advice flies back and forth on a wave of understated horns and bass guitar stroking. A tidy Funker.

This group are good, I’d like to hear more of them.. local soul but very well constructed.. and so RARE

Vernon And Jewel

It Hit Me Where It Hurts

Husband and wife team Vernon Garrett & Jewel Whittaker bounce off each other like two battering-rams of defiance. Jewel snarls like Etta James having her worst of days, Vernon takes a step back, as any man would in the face of Jewel’s immense power.. and the duet works perfectly, as Jewel takes control, with Vernon superbly supporting his wife’s presence on every word..

This is highly convincing R&B Northern Soul on San Francisco’s most-coveted local label. That pulls two of California’s movers ad shakers into the studio; Ray Agee and the prolific Bay Area pro-active producer Ron Badger. The pair inspired the newlyweds through a totally potent street level dancer, no frills, no polish just pure undiluted attitude from these two incredibly powerful vocalists.

This is one of the label’s real tough ones to acquire.. that’s why it is yet to make the Northern Soul impact it’s glaring potential drips with..

Some light surface blemishes but nothing intrudes of the persuasive production..
