Seems like it’s been an absolute age, since we’ve been able to list this Northern Soul trophy-piece, 6 years to be precise

James Chavis certainly knew how to craft superior vocal-group Northern Soul has proven on a number of occasions on his Chavis / Candi stable of labels. But all but a few are ridiculously hard to acquire this example being the toughest!

Ironic as it is also in our eyes and many other his finest work.

Nothing short of Northern Soul brilliance, as the group weave a vocal tapestry through a piano and hammond arrangement crafting an overwhelmingly fine harmony dancer. The interchanging vocal pitches, change in lead and back again and the falsetto intervention provides the listener with one of the finest vocal-group performances to ever be aired on the Northern Soul circuit.

Truly scintillating vocals…

The flip is obviously not as good but acts as a good diversion from the inspiraionally flawless top side.

Robert Parker

I Caught You In A Lie

You Said He Was Your Cousin - But I Found Out He Wasn’t”

For decades this delightful New Orleans conceived dance stroller was a major spin for the SKA / Reggae DJ one of only a few “Soul” titles that regularly featured in top Jocks set. Johnny Taylor’s - If That Ain’t Loving You (For More Reasons Than One” is another title to be honored by the Jamaican music scene.

Recently though after years of occasional Soul jock airings, this Robert Parker’s most elusive NOLA Northern Soul recording has jumped to the fore in NS DJ sets. A few times recently I’ve witness very strong dancefloor response when the needle is dropped..this 45 is on the UP!

So when a flawless White Demo comes along, it fits nicely into our weekly affordable must-have category…

Two clean labels and vinyl to match.. yes must-have!

Spider Turner

I've Got To Get Myself Together C/w Where I See You Baby

The versatile Mr. Turner with his most-wanted 45 that has recently exploded into being one of the biggest dancefloor pleasers on the Northern Soul circuit.

Currently enjoying massively enthusiastic response, on the back of more concentrated DJ plays than it received in past years.

Listen to the rather slick arrangement, as the girl-group chirps away in the background complimenting Spyder’s rich vocal, giving up flawless mid-tempo Northern Soul with the addictive qualities that made some of the greats of this pace so very valuable.

Bobby Kline, Tommy Ridgley, quickly jump to mind as comparison’s of this increasingly popular NS style. This 45 is on a steep climb, the NS G-Force will no doubt take it’s demand higher and higher.. maybe into another stratosphere.

Flipside ain’t bad either..

Expressions Of Love C/w Boogie Child

RARE, RARE Sweet Soul backed up with a Boogie Groove on this perhaps unique ATI test press.

Sweeter than sweet, harmony ballad led by a laid-back horizontal lead vocal who’s unhurried deliver marries perfectly with the jazzy arrangement. Sultry sax wails away in a distant background, with fine guitar improvisation com, pliments the harmony group chorus welding the whole production together.

Seamlessly brilliant Sweet Soul.

but a mysterious F-2655* mix, which is right-on-the-money upbeat Northern Soul. (You can Compare the huge difference between the two mixes on You Tube). You will find this “unknown” version massively of more interest to the Northern Soul collector.

Andrews delivers something special - not only with this vinyl-anomaly. But also with the flipside - a slab of Deep Soul “Otis” would have been proud of.

You're Too Much C/w I Need Somebody

Floor lifting New York R&B infused Soul Dancer. An impressive Joe Davis D.I.Y. project with the reliable talents of Larry Lucie adding weight to the lyrics.

Top side travels a bumpy blend of screeching horns and highly strung guitar work as Roger Washington enthusiastically spits out his appreciation of a beauty with a lady with “Big Brown Eyes” perfectly mixing the Soul Sound and the R&B Blues attitude, supremely bridged by a spectacular Sax-break.

Flip it over to be moved by strolling Deep Soul ballad also featuring that skillfully plucked Blues- Guitar. Two strong sides, but more importanly this 45 is tough to find in clean condition. ie Sparkling labels and near flawless vinyl; close inspection of both sides reveal one light blemish not affecting play whatsoever.

Breakaway Part S 1 & 2

Northern Soul cover-ups many do not appreciate but when a record of this capacity get christen “The Back Ship To Hell” you’ve just gotta love the imagination and passion put into “made-up” titles like that..

I can remember hearing this at the Blackpool Mecca whether it was Ian Levine’s furtive imagination responsible or not - I personally think it’s one of the visionary titles ever thought of.

Listen to this magically explosive piece of Northern Soul, you can almost see the “Black Ship” emerging from the mist on a wave of molten rock…

Comfortably sitting at the top of the most-popular Tamla Motown NS 45s, with the added attraction, that it never received a USA release as a 45.

Shimmering with everything required for the Northern Soul girl-dancer to become “lost” in - an exquisite mid-tempo from the desk of the great Johnny Bristol carrying a guarantee to swell the “floor” …

But in this case as a flawless 1971 DEMO, it will also turn heads as it spins..

Billy Clark

Too Bad - Too Sad C/w You'll Never Make It Alone

PROPER NORTHERN SOUL from Washington D.C.!

Click the soundfile - stand back, await the scorching lift-off, as an uncompromising Lonnie Brown & Larry Davis production jolts you straight into dance-mode, with saxophonist Billy Clark heading up the credits for the raucous recording!

Screeching Horns ignite visions of shiny-puffed-up cheeks, pumping the brass for all it’s worth. Leads vocal (Lonnie Brown) is just as convincing, direct, muscular and relentless. As he urgently pants out defiant lyrics after being “cheated” on and he’s in no mood for forgiveness.

For many decades now this has been recognized as the real-deal without ever reaching the heights a record of this quality warrants. The only reason I can think of, is not enough copies to go round the DJ’s, with the dearth stunting its exposure or is it the flipside having been gobbled up by those Japanese Deep Soul extremists.

PROPER DEEP SOUL!

Now flip it over for the second helping of Real-Deal Soul! That worldwide Deep Soul aficionados have been lauding over for the same amount of time. The horns fall into a sorrowful mood, the hammond drops down to a funeral paced whirring, the girls decorate Billy’s obvious grief with subtle despairing choruses.

Give It Up C/w You Went Away

Here’s a 45 you seldom see on the market…

One that slots straight into today’s FUNK infused Soul dance genre.. with a flipside which will “wow” the Sweet Soul fan.

Topside is in the style being preferred by some of the countrys Top Jocks of the day. Soul spiked with FUNK is the flavour of the time; so check out this buoyant dance tune, as the gathering mix chants, shouts and smooth vocals into this persistent dance groove, peaking with an highly skilled jazzy guitar break.

Flip it over to absorb a gathering begging and pleading with silky vocals, decorated by an equally luxurious backing arrangement pierced by an icy-cold falsetto, a truly Soulful stepper from the top-drawer.

This listing is an Auction debutante and is very rarely seen in any condition; But it is so important with Sweet Soul ballads, that the sound is not compromised by surface marks - as you can hear this 45 plays flawless..

Again two stand-out sides… that warrant serious consideration.

Masqueraders

How C/w I'm Gonna Make It

The Masqueraders undoubtedly one of the most talented Soul teams ever assembled. Over the years recording for a multitude of labels and I’m finding myself unable to think of one single track I don’t like.

The Masqueraders - consistently delivering quality.. was their brand..

Before you is their most-coveted 45, not only because it was released on one of Detroit’s most-sought-after labels but because it gives up not one but two utterly magnificent Northern Soul dancers.

The topside may today, be considered a classic, but it is equally well received at the “rare” venues, as it is at the oldies orientated events. Never suffering from too much exposure. The flipside must be held in equally high-regard by those who scratch below the surface for their tunes, as most feel it is equally mesmerizing. As the lead vocal changes from a creamy soulful schmooze to a snarling angry guy on a mission, stating his case hanging onto a thumpin’ dance arrangement.

Against all odds this copy, is one the few “La Beat” 45s that escaped the trauma of flooding and has two very acceptable labels just a couple of insignificant h2o zits (see scan). The vinyl is truly immaculate underlined by paper-chard still hanging from the punched-out center hole, evidence of almost no human-contact. A 45 that is so very, very challenging to find this Detroit double-helping of perfect vocal-group Northern Soul in this near flawless condition.

Corruption Is The Thing C/w Chrystal Illusion

Over the last few years, many of Europe’s more upfront Rare Soul Jock’s leanings towards the funkier production, has suddenly toppled over into a raging lust to find the rarest 45s with Funk driven productions. This extremely rare Cleveland crafting sits tightly into that genre.

With the bonus of a “DJ SHADOW” break at the beginning.

Bob Kuban And The In-men

The Cheater

Seriously Rare 1965 British Red & White of this MOD Club anthem. Twisted Wheel, Mojo, Nite Owl, and all the London 8 til late hangouts would reverberate to this top-drawer “Blue-Eyed” Soul anthem that still today gets them up on the floor.

Leavin’ this slab of British Eye-Candy aside for one moment, this 45 carries with it one ironically horrific tale.

Lead singer of the Bob Kuban Band was one “WalterScott”, who disappeared in 1983, as his wife was cheating with a James Williams, who not only murdered his own wife, he also murdered Walter Scott so he could be with Scott’s wife, drastic but true.

The songs lyrics “He’ll Take Your Girl” “Look Out For The Cheater” came home to roost sadly in Walter Scotts real life; his body was found 4 years later in cistern. James Williams got life for the two murders and recently died in prison ..obviously cheating didn’t pay kind dividends for Mr. Williams or indeed the singer who made this song one of the mid-60s greatest “dance” tunes.

Before you is its most-sought after format. But beware Red & Whites can bring out the worst in some people…some British Collectors could “Kill” for ownership.

Billy Thompson

Black-eyed Girl C/w Kiss Tomorrow Good-bye

Wand Records the darling-label of the Northern Soul aficionados, is right up there alongside Okeh etc. The diverse wealth of product, the mysteriously RARE 45 where only a handful are known, the standout Soul Greats like Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown have kept this label close to NS Hearts for decades, by constantly having the power to tantalize the collector.

Billy Thompson’s only record for Wand underlines the net Scepter/Wand cast whilst releasing independent recordings. This Boston, Massachusetts production was made possible when two active musical locals Herschel Dwellingham & Barry Richards came together to cover Danny White’s highly emotional Deep Soul song “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”… with the Northern Soul thumper written by those producers languishing on the flipside…

Now considered a top-quality underplayed certainty, jogging a few old-school minds back to the mid-70s when this 45 was receiving the turntable action it deserved, but fortunately never having the dubious honor of being bootlegged so remaining high up in the NS coveted league today.

If Scepter/Wand fascinates you as much as it does me, there is an in-depth, painstakingly researched book by Steve Guarnori entitled “SCEPETER/WAND FOREVER which should hit the market very soon. Revealing many previously undocumented facts on the company, artists and it’s records… it will be utterly unmissable….

When this 45 was recorded in 1967, California thought the 800 miles of the San Andreas Fault was on the move - when it was first spun at Cleethorpes Pier the faithful thought an old WW2 floating mine had been detonated below…

Like a rumbling Tsunami heading for shore, Bobby Paris invades the dancefloor like nothing elser - more power, more presence than any other mid-tempo NS 45 ever to grace the turntables… proven by the fact 40 years on and it still has the crowd tripping over each other to find adequate space to perform..

A Little More Love C/w Go Ahead And Laugh

in 1964 a strange chain of events gave birth to one of USA Tamla rarest 45s “A Little More Love” which was “withdrawn” from sale and replaced 4 releases later by “I’m Still Loving”

As far as we know, there is not even a “Promo” copy of Tamla 54106 in existence but a handful of stock copies certainly escaped the “crusher” because ewe have auction two in the last 20 years. So retaining the flipside “Go Ahead And Laugh” was issued as support to “I’m Still Loving You” Tamla 54110.

Tamla 54106 is a major gap in all but the very top Motown collections.

This UK press by a twist of fate was issued on the strength of Kim Weston’s momentous “stand-alone” performance singing “A Little More Love” on ATV “Ready Steady Go” - not that it enhanced sales - because this 45 too is more often than not a gap in UK Tamla Motown collections.

Jacki Bond

Why Can't I Love Him

Extremely elusive British only 1966 Sister Northern Soul from the desk of Pam Sawyer & Lori Burton prolific USA pairing responsible for so many fine Northern Soul offerings.

Presumably Lionel Segal boss at Strike Records of London received one of those USA publishing promo acetates for his consideration; deciding on giving his secretary her second chance to make a name for herself, her first “Strike” 45 failing completely, sadly this one too, followed suit.

Sadly because the side we adore, was relegated to a flipside, even though it was a superior finger-clicking “Soul” inspired dance tune. With everything it takes to break through, perhaps an executive decision that cost “Strike” and Jackie Bond a more fruitful career.

Although Jacki’s “Soul” suited vocal, attracted interest from Larry Page’s “Page One” records where she once again released a “Soul” influenced dance tune “Billy Sunshine”, even with a change of name to “Judi Scott” she again failed to achieve sales.

Jacki Bond another worthy “British Soul” girl who carved out some great tunes in the 60s this one being not only her best, but also by far her rarest and most-wanted!

So now listen to, strong Northern Soul - British production, influenced by two stand-out Amercian writers, performed by a lady, who with a bit of luck could have become an household name.

Flirtations

Stronger Than Her Love C/w Settle Down

The authentic original west coast promo copy delta # 64784 with the top-quality fidelity.

A New York “dream-team” constructed girl-group Northern Soul anthem that in 1975/76 filled the dancefloors of all the leading NS all-night clubs. As the extraordinary writing talents of Sidney Barnes, Horace Ott arranging skills & Herb Abramson producing know how, all comes together in one 2.47 minute experience of Girl Northern Soul at its most effective.

Classic from the Top-Drawer but maybe as we get a little mature in our tastes we can now look at the fabulous down-beater on the flipside. Again it’s Sidney Barnes yearning lyrics that pull you into a whirlpool of Soul as Siren-like the girls lure you into one incredibly fine mid-pacer.

Betty Winston C/w Bobby Robinson

Spellbound C/w Ain't No Sun (since You've Been Gone)

Recent “forum” discussions about this unissued Detroit Northern Soul beauty - jogged my memory to thinking I have an acetate of this somewhere; then purely by chance, a month later I found it. Only God knows how long it has been languishing in unfiled, unprocessed stock, but how refreshing was it to hear again the genius of Richard Popcorn Wylie?

From the late 70s when Richard Popcorn Wylie’s unissued work was appearing on UK RCA’s Grapevine labels. ie Betty Boo “Say It Isn’t So”, some acetates of recordings not used as Grapevine 45 releases, got circulated to a few privileged NS DJ’s.

Before you today is a 7” UK cut acetate aimed at DJ use… “Spellbound” being a stunning example of “Popcorn’s” work and of course his consistent rare-talent for crafting, what later became peerless Northern Soul.

As a bonus there’s a cool version of “Ain’t No Sun (Since You’ve Been Gone” on the flipside…

I’d like to tell you more of how in came into my possession but I honestly can’t remember, it may well have been decades ago… sacrilege!! ..as this killer requires to be in a NS DJ’s box, as Northern Soul of this calibre begs to grace the club turntables again…

MOTOWN MOONLIGHTING?

For this weeks under-the-radar Northern Soul rarity to consider, we go to Detroit, to the label that provided the Northern Soul collector with that fine but “undervalued” 45 by Tony Birchett - Don’t Put Out The Fire & also offering the Detroit collector the only other known “Reggie Alexander” 45.

Making this mostly “unknown” example huge validation as a Motor City rarity. Not overlooking the fact that this 45 is riddled with Motown connections. Both sides are JOBETTE Music guided by two Motown stalwarts Clarence Paul & Morris Broadnax - and it shows as both sides IMHO are fabulous.

The side we lead with is a horn-powered mid-tempo Northern Soul Crossover groove benefiting from the pairings Motown apprenticeship, with a strong “Stevie Wonder” inspired lead vocal, shrill mixed-vocal-group chorus makes for a smooth fluid NS dancer…

Flip it over to be treated for an extraordinary downbeat experience, moody, mysterious mood-changer that builds skyward on a wave of vocals and horns… listen and melt!!

Two killer tunes one extremely rare disc..dripping with potential.

A few insignificant light surface marks but not one affecting play in any way..

Patti Austin

(i've Given) All My Love C/w Why Can't We Try Again

This week’s “Black Is Beautiful” is a real gem, from this teenage Princesses of Northern Soul.

Here is Patti with her last 45 for Coral under direction from Fred Tanner, she steps up into a finger-clicking brass filled dancer; that elegantly twists, jumps and turns its was through 2.24 minutes of self assured Northern Soul, with Patti belying her tender 16 years of age, delivering a mature confident performance backed up by a full orchestra.

Just like many of Patti Coral sessions, the flipside is also strong mid-60s Soul dance.. but as we all known, the extra value of this 45 is its rarity as a black stock copy in such glorious condition.

Irresistible…

Sam Cooke

Another Saturday Night

Your formative years after leaving school, shape in many ways your musical tastes, clothing preferences and your future lifestyle. I had already been introduced to Soul music by my elder brothers friends, all MODS although my “Bro” had lousy taste in most everything including music. I started to frequent the MOD preferred haunts - one of those being the “Bali Hai” room downstairs at the Nottingham Palais.

How cool was this I thought Soul music and plastic Palm Trees and at midnight the dancefloor revolved - boy I had arrived (having never heard of The Twisted Wheel, The Mojo etc) the real hip places. I considered the “Bali Hai” the center of my fashion & music universe.

To this day I can remember the DJ’s top-spins Guy Darrell “I’ve Been Hurt” Bob Keene Orchestra “Winter Again” and I loved Sam Cooke’s “Another Saturday Night” I eventually after Select-A-Disc foraging trips I owned all three.

Then I was taken to The Catacoombs, The Mecca, Va Va’s and the “Bali Hai” was just a bad memory, except the incomparable Sam Cooke, a man I still delight in listening to today.

But what really gets me with this record is this offering is the “DEMO”, can’t even remember the last time I saw one.. a timeless all time fave from my youth and looking so alluring in this rare form.

I bet I’m not the only Soul Boy with this type of wincing recall…who would buzz inside in the presence of this Promo..

Vinyl vs Styrene!

Has never been more important than when encountering this sumptuous double helping of 60s vocal-group Soul. The Gold label styrene press, sadly more often than not has suffered DJ stylus fatigue in varying amounts. The topside being a glorious Northern Soul dancer it will over the years have had to deal with the rigors of the Northern Soul circuit.

However the much-rarer Yellow label press was pressed in robust vinyl and is harder to find by a factor of at least 25 to 1. So the lucky owner can, without fear spin this Fab tune no stylus weariness will ever afflict this killer tune.

When there’s a choice, it is a “No Brainer” to seek out VINYL when the disc is this good and likely to get lots of DJ attention - it’s a must!

Ester Byrde

Touch Me Take Me Vocal & Instrumental

The 1975 original version that many think superior to the better known Rita Wright on 1978 UK Jet. Which ever “take” you prefer, there can be no disputing which 45 is the rarer of the two. With this listing pressed on a tiny independent London enterprise and suffering from limited promotion and stunted distribution.

If my memory serves n=me correctly the Soulful Stepper by Rita Wright was discovered first and exploded into “monster” status on the 90s capital soulful stepper scene.

The original is so much sexier, with Esther’s vocal sparking a male lusting that Rita cannot match.

Seldom seen for sale and this copy as you can see and hear is immaculate

Sonny Jones

Stolen Moments

Rare urban New Orleans Soul … don’t you just love it!

Especially when it emerges from two of the Crescent City’s most industrious music talents, Al Scramuzza & Eddie Bocage collaborate again, molding uncompromising horn propelled Northern Soul, soften slightly by a team of girls, lovingly adding the chorus.. shrill and sweet in contrast to Sonny rasping.

Essentially this recording is a “call & answer” duet started off with a pleading girl-request “for one moment” but there is no Sister credit on the label, even though this mysterious lady owns a beautifully purring vocal.

Flip it over for an highly coveted “on your knees” Deep Soul ballad, shimmering with all the same ingredients as the A-side but taken down to a funeral pace by sorrow-filled Sisters and a droning hammond.

Two perfect examples of 60s New Orleans Soul, distilled with the street experience .

Very seldom comes to market and condition is blinding!

Hit Pack

Never Say No To Your Baby C/w Let's Dance

The mysterious Hit Pack could just as easily called themselves “The Roberts” On this 45 the gatherings one and only single for Motown was created on both sides by Robert Staunton & Robert “Stick To Me” Walker, with allegedly Robert Dobyne booming out the vocal, on a proper uncomplicated Northern Soul stomper, flip it over for some gritty Detroit “Tittyshakin’” Boo-Ga-Loo.

Surprisingly “noncommercial” for Motown riding high in 1965 but not surprising that this release failed miserably in Great Britain, with the Brits fully occupied with adulation for The Supremes, The Miracles, The Temptations, Four Tops etc. etc.

Tamla Motown condition conscious worriers, can rest assured an upgrade of this flawless example would be too challenging to contemplate.

Elaine Armstrong

Sad But True C/w Precious Minutes (i Can Really Call Mine)

Only once before have I had the pleasure of auctioning this phenomenal double helping of Pure-Soul; I was taken aback not only by it’s extreme rarity or by the mighty-presence of this solitary 45 release of a lady with an astonishing vocal.

But by the story of Elaine Armstrong herself, a history making young black girl who in 1965 broke the last University segregation at Hattiesburg, Mississippi as she along with Raylawni Branch; flanked by 6 Policemen the pair the first Afro-American students to attend the last remaining Mississippi University still stubbornly holding on to the “Segregation” ruling..

What a talent this lady was as this “Blow-U-Away” disc proves, as her one Nashville studio session created totally Top-Drawer Black Music.

A-side is a Marva Whitney standard Deep Funk destroyer, as Eliane co-writes with producer Charles Spurling an ear-bleeding juggernaut of a tune! Bulldozing dancefloor-detonator showcasing a young vocal with the power to burst eardrums.. This is DEEP FUNK at it’s most potent!

Flip it over and one of Nashville great providers of Pure Soul gives Elaine a tune that lacerates your gut, stabbing your heart as that sublime vocal portrays Robert S. Riley’s poignant lyrics with passion belying her tender years.

That’s it.. this great lady’s one and only offering to Soul music.. how sad is that ..i could listen to her all day… every day.
