Make Up Your Mind / Can't Take No For An Answer

Now here’s a sight for my poor old sore eyes.. after having to handle those nasty deceiving counterfeits WHITE PROMO, some collectors got ripped off with, all those years ago..

Here is the insanely RARE and rather sumptuous LIGHT BLUE Stock copy, like the Freddie Chavez as a BLUE STOCKER not only ludicrously rare, but also instantly dispels any confusion of authenticity. AS both the Dave Newman & Te Freddie Chavez were bootlegged as the easy to find and easier to copy White Promo variation.

This record gives up Killer Northern Soul that unfortunately was counterfeited far to early in it’s developing popularity at Wigan Casino. Otherwise with it’s same charm as “They’ll Never Know Why” this too would be a “Top 500” Northern Soul classic..

So check out this beauty of Northern Soul collecting and unleash TWO fabulous examples of the sound. Whilst admiring the stunning view of the rarely seen “Stock Copy”

This offering as you’ve probably already guessed is so very very close to MINT!

So In Love / Green Grow The Lilacs

To coincide with the electric enthusiasm the Ruben Molina tour of the UK has sparked, we thought a few superior Sweet Soul “Ghosts” would be a nice compliment to a man who’s DJ set, had me riveted…

Sweet Soul steppers are currently at the forefront Rare Soul DJ’s and collectors minds, more now than ever; My choice today to underline the quality this style is a collision of Chicago & New York. With The Festivals only Motown release..

Now before you think this 45 must be fairly easy to capture, we need to point out this 45 as the GORDY release is actually the exact opposite. As it is ONLY AVAILABLE as the stock copy press, which history has proven it as one of “Gordy’s” labels hardest..

So now take a listen and prepare to become absorbed in a pool of soaring vocals, an abyss of emotion cradled by a raft of strings crafting one of my favourite Soulful steppers of all time, as the vocals reciprocate each other, interchanging seamlessly whilst conveying neverending love, so silkily sweet.

One of Motown’s “impossibles” making me make a statement I thought I never would, this is note for note as flawless as any Originals, Temptations etc ballad. But that must be because The Impressions mentor Johnny Pate was at the helm..

To beautiful to pass on..

This there a more vocally imposing Northern Soul recording, than this Detroit behemoth of Northern Soul? We think not…

Dave Mitchell & The Screamers

The Trip

For those discerning seekers of the rarest labels, and there is a multitude of yuo guys out there; Seeking those rarely seen FIRST LABELS of Northern Soul classics. Here is an instrumental that simultaneously derailed-dancers at the 3 big Northern Soul clubs of the 70s.

Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes Pier & Blackpool Mecca reverberated to this rasping instrumental were all dropping the arm, of this to the same crazed effect. But invariably on it’s first discovered label MET Records of Chicago.

An insane session, with totally deranged use of the Saxophone, bombarding the bass guitar dance rhythm, peppered by horns.. then Dave Mitchell attacks with the sax!

Forgive me but I had forgotten what a stick of Northern Soul gelignite this Paul Serrano session was.

An unstoppable instrumental, that if dropped at the right time, has the power to ignite volcanic dancefloor scenes no other instrumental, ever could… as it gives-up the most exciting saxophonist display perhaps ever committed to a 45!

On this, it’s very first label, “The Trip” is a super-tough Northern Soul classic, dressed in these clothes.

I Do / Darling

In celebration of this months British Invasion of Memphis we thought it would be timely to show-off one of Memphis’s least seen Northern Soul offering.

There is no need for us to underline how collectable the Goldwax label is. But we do need to wax-lyrical about this easy-floating vocal-group Northern Soul dancer, propelled by horns, a lilting piano and a silky lead vocal. So very typical of those gifted boys Dan Penn & Andrew Spooner Oldham providing another infectious “Simple Is Genius” recording.

I make no secret of being obsessed with those tight vocal-group harmonies when knitted into a dance production. This 45 always leaves me wondering why this 45 hasn’t consistently featured in Northern Soul DJ sets over the years. (Shame On You Manship) this is dancefloor perfection.

Flip it over for a ballad also shimmering with seamless harmony.. a ballad of pure quality..

Two great sides, one extremely elusive disc! Time for the NS DJ’s to have another long good listen…

Steve Karmen Feat: Jimmy Radcliffe

Breakaway

Perhaps Northern Soul’s most atmosphericly soul-stirring instrumental to ever hit the burgeoning scene of the early 70’s. This pre-Wigan Casino, drop ignited near dance floor hysteria, among those weekly “Mecca” pilgrims who travelled the length and breath of Britain, just to hear and dance to, the seemingly bottomless pit of stand-out new Northern Soul discoveries; that Ian Levine and Colin Curtis presented on an unrivalled weekly basis

When first dropped on those hallowed turntables in the Highland Room it was a “secret sound” covered up as what must be the most fitting title of all cover-ups, as it mirrored Steve Karmen’s inspiring but haunting creation so aptly.

THE BLACK SHIP TO HELL!

Still as motivational today, to our adult ears, as it was 43 years ago,to us “eager to learn” teenagers.

But surely not as “motivational” as that utterly eye-popping label vista of the near impossible acquire STOCK copy. Which in my experience sits in a ratio of 100s and 100s to “one” rarer than the still very precious white-PROMO.

This is a listing for those of you determined to own the legendary Northern Soul Anthems in their rarest, least-seen, most-challenging formats.

A Beautiful in the extreme, a timeless NS thoroughbred…

Soul Brothers

You Don't Want To Know / I Can't Believe It

What a cool find, a hidden gem, on a flipside of one seriously elusive 45!

We are presuming these two recordings are by a British based Jamaican gathering, we are also thinking very few of our auction members will have encountered this fabulous Brit-Soul creation before… It is ridiculously rare.

So take a listen to euphoric England1966 style, and an impressive vocal-group mid tempo, steeped in a cocktail of Caribbean and British influences inspired by the slick harmonies of The Impressions and The Temptations that were so dominant at the time.

As so often happened the record company headed up this release with what they considered the most commercial side, needless to say, with no finger on the “Soul-Pulse” they got it completely wrong, hiding the superior 60s dance production away on the “B”.

For the umpteen “Red and White” stalkers, this 45 will be widening their eyes, but be aware those Old-School Northern Soul British-vinyl-45 collectors, hit a “Brick Wall” as they completed the more accessible discs years ago, leaving only upgrading and the insanely obscure English 7”s their only fuel to feed the addiction.

Herbie Goins

Coming Home To You

Herbie Goins with his Night-Timers, was a man who cut the benchmark for British produced Soul music for those fledgling All Night Clubs dominated by Soul Music.

EMI led with the quirky A-side which try to ride on the coattails of Georgie Fame. A novelty that missed the “Soul” criteria completely, so far off the mark it highlighted how out of touch these Record Executives were when it came to what was really happening in the life of young Britain’s, who were about to vote Otis Redding as best male vocalist of 1967.

Maybe Herbie himself had some say in the production of the flipside “Coming Home To You” capturing the influences of Stax / Atlantic with a Memphisesque production featuring imposing horns and his sandpapered vocal chords.

This is a 45, again rescued from certain death by those vinyl-ferrets demanding more from their vinyl, spinning every B-side in te hope of undercovering a “Lost Soul Gem”

Well they certainly did that this time, a record now considered perfect “MOD” dancer..and a highly sought after UK rarity with all the right credentials.

Brenda Jones

Big Mistake / Super Stroke

For decades hidden away of a flipside of a very capable Funk session, ” Big Mistake” eventually broke through to become a dancers favourite, as just the right amount of DJ’s supported this instantly motivating tune.

Today here is a flawless PROMO copy of this oh so very wanted dancefloor-detonator, that rarely comes to market in such impeccable condition.

Prepare yourself for a potent Sister Funk-saturated Northern Soul, as Brenda punishes herself in no uncertain terms, how leaving her man, she “messed-up” when he didn’t treat her right, but left her little boy behind. This style of girl-self-recrimination does not come any more concentrated than this session, making for an abyss of poignant regret, so cleverly woven into an irresistible dance arrangement.

Funky, but retaining all those seamless ingredients essential for the NS dance floor, one you can fill you eyes to, whilst getting down..

Secret Love

Stupidly RARE!

In the year of my birth, Doris Day delivered a performance that would rivet her to iconic status for life, from “Calamity Jane” “Secret Love” has since been cover by many Soul artists “Billy Stewart” did a magnificent version, as did Mel Willians..

But as soon as you hark the few first notes of this high-octane version, you’ll instantly be thinking WIGAN CASINO in it’s heyday;

As Mike Jones violently deconstructs the classic, wrapping it up in a stomping production inspired by “Rescue Me” and the like. Crash, bang, wallop backing full of brass and squealing Girl-Group chorus..

THIS IS WIGAN CASINO circa 1974/75 but it was never to be.. the record was not known back in those amphetamine fuelled nights.. that the instrumental break would have sent the dancers over-the-top.

Vibes, girls, breaks, horns, strong lead vocal it spits out Northern Soul …maybe 40 years too late.. but I’m betting few would leave a packed Northern Soul dancefloor at a Northern soul weekender.. and when the parting instrumental kicks in, I’m imagining pulled muscles, slipped discs and heart-attacks..

Buckle up ..and click that run-away-truck soundfile..

Fearns Brass Foundary

Don't Change It

I did have a little giggle to myself when this 45, on it’s elusive USA Parrot press appeared as being credited to FOUNDARY, Fearns.

Well Miss Fearns was actually an highly regarded Leicestershire gathering of men equipped with a huge brass section that blasted out the window panes of Blaby Working Men’s Club every Thursday Night for years.

They were Leicestershire’s answer to the Bar-Kays with Steve Fearn’s lead singer carrying enough snarl in his vocal to sound “Black”, with the horn section just saturated in Soulfulness, it was the perfect combination.

As a Soul-Collecting-Embryo in 1970 I would walk the streets of Leicester and find Fearns Brass Foundary 45s occasionally but today there’s more chance of Leicester City winning the premiership, than tripping over a copy of this superior made-in-Britain Northern Soul stomper…

Over the decades it’s reputation has mushroomed, now enjoying turntable action from some NS Jocks.

So do not pause, when a January 1968 Promo copy surfaces.. as we predict this tune has some way to go to reach it’s peak, with sightings rapidly diminishing as it becomes much wider known..

Some mild surface blemishes, both labels are flawless, not that a vg- scratchy copy could ever drown those mighty brass-blasts from Miss Fearns…

she is, after all, obviously one hell of a blower..

Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart / He's All I Got

Berry Gordy’s inspirational decision to bring together Holland - Dozier - Holland with Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Diana Ross, was a union that repaid the company with Motown’s their greatest ever Girl-Band success.

The decision of EMI to enhance their label design of the Promo 45s, as an instantly striking Red & White, ignited a vinyl-addiction, from which the British Record Collector has never recovered.

TMG 560 amalgamates both these events into one seductive offering.

Then, adding the Northern Soul effect, which this 45 gives up not once but twice over. You have before one of the most-desirable UK Tamla Motown 45s it is possible to own.

With vinyl being a whisker from Mint and the labels free from writing of tears (there is a faint sticker re-issue stain) this disc will certainly, kindle strong yearnings of ownership.

Luther Ingram

If It's All The Same To You Babe / Exus Trek

Story Time, circa 1972

This Northern Soul anthem catapults me back to my very beginnings of attending the “real” Northern Soul clubs of Britain, leaving local Town Hall, Friday Youth Club and the local city clubs, I traveled to by bus, like “The Brit” to venturing out with “The Gang” to The Catacombs..

I didn’t hear this indelible-dancer at the “Cats” Temple Street that night, but being exuberant teenagers, high on the “Cats” experience, we made the unanimous decision to travel to Northampton to attend an “All Dayer” at the almost as legendary “SHADES” club, for Northern Soul on a Sunday.

When we arrived mid-afternoon, after a night of dancing in lay-bys to our cassette player. The place was empty, 8 weary Melton Mowbray fledglings, and oh so tired, sat in a cavernous hall thinking, this was not a good move, for our gang or the handful of locals, seemingly equally, lost, drained and disillusioned…

Then the DJ (most likely Glen Bellamy) dropped the arm on “If It’s All The Same To You Babe” …searing through the desolate void.. a young Northampton lad who had tried to make light of the dismal situation, by telling poor jokes, sprung to his feet and took solo to the floor..

His name was BRILLO (aka Bob Pierce) because of his excruciatingly tight curled up close-cropper hair on his head, he was a comical sight at first with trousers obviously on loan from his Dad or big brother and far to tight Tee Shirt, he thought his younger sister wouldn’t miss…

BUT BOY COULD HE DANCE..!

He just let it all go, stunning us into jaw-dropping silence, “Luther Ingram” was wailing out Richard Popcorn’s genius lyrics, with Robert Bateman “kitchen-sink” of strings, horns, Mike Terry’s burping-baritone-sax and a mighty choir of backing singers…

We all wanted to dance to this instantly motivational Monster, even on the first hearing. But no way was anyone else taking to the dancefloor, with “Brillo” gliding on air, turning in a gymnastic performance “Olga Korbut” would have definitely plagiarized.

THIS IS A NORTHERN SOUL..

Just a fleeting 3 minutes from decades ago, remains as vivid today as if it was last night… when the record finished “Brillo” sat straight down, pulling his tangled-hang-loose trousers into place and continued with another crap joke…

This record has the power to fire euphoric recall for every one of us, every time!

Here’s a neat clean copy of a top 10 Northern Soul anthem that has been causing dancefloor-gridlock for approaching 50 years now, with no sign of anyone tiring of hearing Detroit inventiveness from two of the Motor City most ingenious, as the pair of former Motown players, join hands, crafting Northern Soul at it’s most-impressive.

Noting the two labels are perfect, the vinyl reveals only the merest hairline, sleeve contact blemishes if you squint! On play the vocal side has a couple of mild clicks carefully check the sound file.

A stunning Green & White in exactly the same condition as the day it was mailed out by EMI promotion staff all those decades ago

this DEMO 45 is MINT!

Like so many, many of Motown 60s recordings, this Supreme classic gives up a Northern Soul flipside, that eclipses the A-side by quite some distance. “There’s No Stopping Now” for many of us was a Youth Club classic dance floor favorite, especially with the ladies.

A seamless display of distilled girl-group Motown, giving up a tangible uplifting atmosphere with it’s positive-love-affair lyrics..not a hint of “my man done me wrong” with this song… A Fantastic feel-good tune..

The big white “A” side, was of course a huge hit Motown and we all know how elusive those British TMG hits are as those irresistible DEMO’s…

Marianne Samwell

Don't Hurt That Man Of Mine

You would think that in 2016, for those dedicated to collecting British born rare-soul 45s; there would be very little left to consider and add to that lifelong list of UK Soul to pursue.

Hold on a minute, check this seriously RARE 1971 45 that sneaked out without anyone noticing. Many of you will not own or indeed even be familiar with this imposing UK recording…even for the well-seasoned Soul-Sage, it will be a debut listen.

Rarity being underlined by the largest vinyl collecting community in the world “Discogs” suggests this 45 may never have been released, somewhat validates the disc’s staggering obscurity, not only because the artist seems to have only one 45 release. But also, all the usual web searches draw frustrating “blanks”….a 45 of extreme elusivity and widely unknown at this time.

Click the sound file to unleash a spectacular full horn, zinging string and heavenly chorus production; just perfect for the Northern Soul dancer. Such a captivating mid-tempo groove, it’s hard to believe it was “Made in Britain” as Marianne elevates her vocal to compliment Anthony king’s muscular production.

For those of you who fit the profile of our opening lines, this is a disc you may not encounter again very soon, and certainly not in this previously UNPLAYED condition, still snugly sleeping in it’s birth-sleeve.

Gorgeous George

The Biggest Fool In Town / Sweet Thing

Georgia master-tailor only cut a few 45’s but many underline his outrageous skill for delivering utter despair, with a rasping vocal chords, and seamless beseeching portrayal of lyrics.

Gorgeous George is considered within Deep Soul circles, an icon of the sound. On this recording he agains bends his vocal towards misery, with a convincing illustration of love’s-pain, whilst Steve Cropper’s guitar drives the rhythm.

This elusive Stax that has for decades been considered one of Stax’s most elusive sides as well as being their finest Deep Soul recording within a plethora of the world’s greatest Soul ballads., but you will hear that rarity, is overridden by a scorching Deep Soul Grail, served up cold, drench in despondency.

Described by John Ridley, who in my opinion is the Planet’s leading authority on the Deep Soul sound as …”A masterpiece – no question!”

Flip it for a Stax dance sound, which has eluded the Northern Soul circuit.. time this meaty Memphis dancer got an airing, if only for the insane sax break..

If your bag is snarling Blues projected by a seemingly whiskey and nicotine torn vocal, this gorgeous platter will focus your attention for over 30 minutes, as one of the greatest exponents of R&B struts his stuff.

So often with 60s albums, they seem to have difficulty in providing the listener with a full compliment of top quality music on every track. This album does exactly what it so colourfully claims on the front cover, “The Best Of” from the “best”

I Look In The Mirror / Where There's A Will There's A Way

Eddie Williams with one of this iconic label’s RAREST discs, offering on the money Northern Soul not just once but an highly impressive twice over.

You “Can’t Be Still” when you encounter the brawny presence of this 45. Northern Soul takes to the air, with Eddie Williams’s under recorded vocal whipping up a storm, this is street level distilled Northern Soul without even a mere hint of a commercial note throughout both sides of this “impossible” 45.

Another example of insane rarity preventing this recording from rising up to it’s deserved mythical status. Even though the flipside recently enjoyed a very limited but overlooked British release, when a worth your attempt to introduce some Dore “Giants” into the UK NSVcollectors market, with “Little Johnny Hamilton” - Keep On Moving - adorning the flipside. A wise purchase if this rarity becomes out-of-reach…

but if collecting the mythical NS rarities, do not pass by, this 45 rarely if ever, surfaces for sale, offering not one but two “top tunes” that have yet to collide with the Northern Soul masses..

Like most men, I’ve always been a admirer of lady’s bottoms in tight denim… so much so, I’ve been awaiting for “Where There’s Blame There’s a Claim” & Co. to take on cases of Whiplash caused by said “Buttocks” willfully wiggling around in the British springtime.. But what about the serious possible damage that could be triggered to the Old-school Northern Soul / Motown label-lechers, by wafting TMG Red and White DEMO’s around..

All I can say about Red & White of this calibre is that they do equally pleasure the eye.. and ease the mind.. by confirming that when confronted with such beauty, the relief of knowing that the need for Viagra is still some years away…

Top Northern Soul Classic with a killer NS flipside in by far and away it’s most want, in fact lusted-after attire..

Patti Austin

Didn't Say A Word

After a lifetime of listening to Yvonne Baker’s timeless NS classic, this early 70’s reworking by the late, great Billy Jackson is not only a breath of Northern Soul fresh air it is also starting to received strong turntable time with the Rare-Soul Jocks.

Billy The Kid could hardly have chosen a more fitting artist to deliver this exceptional song, a now seasoned Patti Austin grabs hold to bring the song into the 70s.

We are predicting much bigger things for the disc, as the phones ring to see if we have a copy.. so many times that auction seemed to be the only route, for this near perfect copy..

Also noting “Didn’t Say A Word” is only available as the rarely encountered STOCK copy, and we al know how frustrating that scenario is.

The time to add this to your collection or DJ set is now… before you know what happens..

Lord, What's Happening To Your People

A MINT STOCK COPY… a Northern Soul record with a story to tell.

You have to hand it to Colin Curtis & Ian Levine constantly pushing the Northern Soul envelope. Breaking more “Outside The Box” NS dancers than any DJ’s before or since. As this Gospel flavoured groove could hardly be further away from the Northern Soul norm. It did however captivate the dancer minds and within a few months became one of the guaranteed floor-packers of the mid-70’s Club scene.

But before you today is a 45 that nobody at one stage thought existed. The brightly coloured stock copy had never been encountered before a vinyl-hound from York found 3 copies in his home (if memory serves me correctly) The Pedley / Rhodes Posse had struck gold.. nobody believed 3 copies could turn up 1000’s of miles from Cincinnati, Ohio on Dick Turpin’s manor but they did.

These were the very first sightings of this eye-candy stocker that the Brits had ever seen..

Today this vision is just as highly coveted - RARE in the extreme, beyond beautiful and this copy is MINT

As the Judge said to Dick Turpin at York Assizes “Resistance of course .. is useless”

Your Bucket's Got A Hole In It / Leave That Boy Alone

Like uba-RARE Northern Soul..?

If so, take a long look and a good long listen to this Chicago Sisters Northern Soul dancer from the desk Maurice Dollison.

Dead-right fir today’s NS penchant for defiant Sister who tell their man where to go.. solid 60s NS dancer with a pinch of Funky attitude, guaranteeing dancefloor acceptance…

On first hearing this 45, I couldn’t believe it had not in the past, risen up to Northern Soul fame. It has everything required including serious rarity. But it seems serious rarity is the only thing holding this back from being know. Apparently the few copies known were quickly snapped up by another country’s thirst for the superior Deep Soul ballad that sits on the flipside.

This is a debutant to the raresoulman auctions.. and only it’s outrageous scarcity has been the cause of that. Time for a NS DJ to capture it, a good blasting on the Northern Soul scene is decades overdue or will it be a another case of it jetting off to the Far-East..?

So RARE it hurts..

Chuck Cornish

A Tribute To Mohammed Ali / Let's Go Steady

If your the type of Northern Soul DJ who likes to know his intended one hour set is not gonna get trumped by the guy on before you. Will be comforted to know the likelihood of anyone else having this record in their DJ box are the 1000’s of times longer than Leicester City winner the Premiership by a bag full of points..

So stupidly RARE this New Orleans 45 is our first copy for near 40 years. 1977 in a score of Dover distributed labels is the last time I had this 45, then I only had the one lone copy..

Excitedly noting this avalanche of Northern Soul using Chuck Cornish lyrics woven into that impossible NS Grail by Senator Jones - Do you Love Me - Shagg 713.

THIS IS HARD-LINE NORTHERN SOUL

The proper stuff, the type of stomper that rips up dancefloors, triggers jaw-dropping gymnastics, causing collisions as the frantic dance one-upmanship surges through the dancefloor..

but more importantly BEYOND RARE in our experience rare than the “Senator Jones” - Do You Love Me - and every note as imperative..

This what Northern Soul collecting, DJing & Dancing is all about. The certified rare rarities with he power to persuade..

PS Do not pass by the flipside, which is gut wrenching New Orleans neighborhood Deep Soul…

Brenda Holloway

When I'm Gone / I've Been Good To You

I could not ever imagine, finder a finer copy of this Motown Girl-Anthem, than what is sitting before me now.

Astonishing condition, utterly flawless, Red & white in it’s birth-sleeve, of a aggressively-hunted TMG 508 red & white DEMO!

A record Smokey Robinson originally recorded with Motown Queen Mary Wells, but the scheduled 45 came to an abrupt halt, when Mary Wells shocked Hitsville when she crossed over to 20th. Century Fox.

Smokey wisely chose new girl on the block, to take hold of the baton of a Motown masterpiece far to good to be canned. the rest is history, as Los Angeles Sister was perfect for the song. Her expressive, vocals wholly elevating those cautioning lyrics…

“What are You Gonna Do When I’m Gone..” Brenda sends a warning shot so very sweet over her boyfriends head, to create arguably Motown leading Girl-Power song.

Ownership on this listing will be essential to the Red & White Junkie, TMG OCD upgraders, Vinyl investors and Rare Northern Soul DJ who get a kick out of turning the audience green..

Unbeatable in more ways than one..

Hitsville Motown Personal Greetings Card

For Clive Stone In Detroit 1964

The greeting card that met Clive Stone as he checked into his Hotel prior to his Motown Christmas Party reception. Complete with a MINT UNPLAYED totally perfect inside birth-sleeve. Hitsville press of the Greetings to The British Motown Appreciation Society.

How professional is that of Berry Gordy’s team, precisely handwritten note left in Clive stone’s room upon arrival at the Lexington Hotel, 2970 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit.

Holding the tiny handwritten card, the fragile envelope, it does create a vivid vision of Clive Stones epic trip to Motown flying the British Flag for the then growing enthusiasm in England for the Motown Sound.

Motown memorabilia cannot get any more poignant than this package..

Garnet Mimms

It Was Easier To Hurt Her C /w So Close

Living in the shadows of “Looking For You” too long?

But thanks to You Tube this mighty New Yorker is rising up as a Beat Ballad Heaven masterpiece. But that is what happens when Jerry Ragovoy, Bert Russell and Garry Sherman collaborate. The Big Apple’s “gifted” purveyors of the Big City Sound knit stand-out lyrics into an equally impressive production.

Slow intro, opens up this recording full of regret, as Garnet unfolds a story of his “Treat Her Bad” tactics to secure his girl, backfired leaving him alone.

Take time to absorb this utterly awesome session which I consider “Garnett’s Greatest Studio Moment” a recording encapsulating every last drop of what “Beat Ballad” stands for.

A vocal drenched in remorse, lyrics every man can relate to; with the backing Girl-Group almost smirking on the choruses, as the ladies totally convince in their “You Shouldn’t Have Done That” delivery.

Kettle Drums, strings, horns, gentle guitar caresses, a sombre bass guitar plucks, all add to this recordings unparalleled muscle…

Boy, this is a “Lost Art” … of which Ragovoy, Russell & Sherman were THE MASTERS

Harvey Averne Dozen

The Harvey Averne Dozen

A ORIGINAL 1968 Stereo press just littered with desirable tracks for the DJ, or a captivating 35 minutes for the collector.

An album underlining why Harvey & the Boys enjoy such a strong underground following: Blending soulful vocals, woven into Latin arrangements. Sometimes as sweet as honey, or as mean, potent motivational dance cuts, like the essential Northern Soul classic “I Never Learned To Dance”

This “100 Club” signature tune conveniently for the DJ sits as track one. Whilst the equally appreciated “Central Park” is on the same side. Check out the soundfile lifted directly off this disc. This copy does carry a few mild blemishes but plays great!

The back cover though has suffered from not being protected by a poly-jacket, front cover has mild ring-wear and the seams being strengthen by the bemusing 60’s practice of cello-taping the edges. We’ve graded it vg, check the detailed scans provided.

Whilst this is not an album for the fastidious LP collector, it certainly is an album for the DJ who wants knows how to stampede the crowd to the dance floor.

Full of great dance tunes and other equally enthralling Latin flavoured Soul. Get clicking that impressive soundfile…

NOT JUST A NORTHERN SOUL GRAIL!

..but also one of those value 45s that you can’t ever tire of, because when you just get used to one side; Just flip it over and your treated to another Northern Soul treasure that is every note as good.

This disc for me encapsulates everything a Northern Soul vocal group dance tune should sound like. Compelling you to the dancefloor not only on the dance rhythm but also on the expressive harmony vocals stirring up something deep inside of you..

An early example of the extreme talent of Freddie Perrin a producer who would 12 years down the line created girls # 1 anthem, that became one of the best all time Soul selling hits. We noted that fact, because this 1966 recording also carries that magic “Perrin” effect that makes it a stand-out session.

A Washington D.C. rarity of immense importance, not only to the Rare Soul DJ but also to keep that dancefloor charged up!

Solomon King

This Beautiful Day

1970 B-side that rose up from the pile of dross released in Britain that year to becoming a Northern Soul anthem through turntable time at The Torch, Wigan Casino, Yate, Cleethorpes Pier, St. Ives, Blackpool Mecca in fact is there a Northern Soul Club post 1971, that hasn’t pulsated to the scorching voice of Solomon King..?

As Bob Barrett heaps layer after layer of voices and instruments, the production swells into and unstoppable force, which Solomon King compliments with a prolonged crescendo of vocal gymnastics at the finale..

SOME TUNE this is, a real classic that has nearing 50 years pedigree of igniting dancefloors..

Because I Love You

When actually was the last time we had a copy of this Northern Soul Ghost..?

We would love to tell you, but neither our sales database going back 17 years or my mind going back even further has any record of it..

If accumulating Northern Soul classics is your lifetime’s work, then do not pass this rare window of opportunity by. Because there is no guarantee we’ll find another, or more importantly not a copy in this exceptional condition.

Two flawless labels and perfect vinyl with the merest of paper contact blemishes on the flipside, A-side is MINT!

A record treated with the utmost suspicion when it appeared in the UK via a notorious Los Angeles Bootlegger. On a styrene green label press, as everyone thought who would dare in the 60s to actually try and attempt to sing Jerry William’s unparalleled performance, In fact it was a few years before I encountered a “Real One” and I think this example is only my second copy since the late 7os..

Insanely RARE and a darn killer version too..

Mable John

No Love / Looking For A Man

Attention the serious Motown collectors, some of you now have been buying Motown from John Manship Records for near 45 years. So we know CONDITION is the deciding factor whilst buying some of the 45s you just never encounter in flawless condition.

Her is a “striped” rarity in eye-popping condition, “H 667” mix of Mable’s 2nd. 45 for Berry Gordy. This copy the deadwax marking as well as reading H 667 carry 3 deadwax stampings ARP, Bell Sound, Audio Matrix both sides.

As you can see BOTH labels are Mint, the vinyl reveals not a mark, just a very faint blemish revealing a life of filing on a shelf.

Motown OCD collectors we challenge you to find a finer copy, it is certainly the cleanest example I have ever seen. On the very few occasions we encounter this 45 it is invariably scuff, scratched and battered with labels with NR (no return) stampings or writing, tears and stains.

This copy we repeat is utterly flawless.

Not overlooking that the Northern Soul R&B DJ, considers “Looking For A Man” as this sassy lady’s best R&B dance session is sitting on the flipside! A play-perfect copy for the Northern Soul R&B turntables… now that is unusual.

You will not find a better example of Mable at her most imposing, than this pristine 1961 press

An infectious Michigan FUNK instrumental incorporating mild Jazz influences with piercing Horns punching through the percussion dominated arrangement. Littered with bongos, cow-bell whacks.

A disc, that I found myself playing 4 times in a row, as the production creeps under your skin..with an accomplished guitar plucking, relentless pushing the dance-rhythm from underneath those persistent horns.

Lonely, Lonely / I Want You To Be Baby

Just how many exquisite Northern Soul James Anthony Carmichael has constructed over the is mind boggling. A main driving force behind the making of stand-out Soul throughout the 60s, his achievements taking him onto a place in Motown’s writing & production team during the 70’s.

Here he is guiding Morris Chestnut and pals, through a convincing honkin’-horn propelled Northern Soul dancer, displaying some of the tightest harmony vocals you could ever wish to dance to. With Mr. Carmichael inserting some timely instrumental breaks that lift the session into dance heaven, whilst the group deliver polished vocals with a sprinkling of pain.

She Said No / Everybody Tries

A Red & White Tsunami is happening at Raresoulman auctions this month.and this disc is such pleasing encounter, as I’ve not met a copy in years!

September 1965 Mark Lloyd first release, that has lived in the shadows of his “I’ve Gotta Find Her” for decades; but those British Rare-Soul-Ferrets have since the very beginning been screaming.. “what about his other one!”

Indeed his first record, with his name spelled slightly different, also fell by the wayside on little or no airplay, consequenty no sales. After all it the A-side was an insipid sugary, whiny, whinging recording that had all the right ingredients but the wrong delivery.

But what if Parlophone had led with the far superior Soul influenced flipside “She Said No”

A rare Brit-Soul stroller, enriched by an uncredited girl-group vocal chorus, with timely high-octane Woo-Woo’s, accentuating Mr. Lloyd’s impressive vocal, as it meanders through a slick Beat Ballad arrangement, decorated by neat guitar riffs lifted by those echoing girls, as the ease of the male vocal pulls you into Beat Ballad Heaven.

Damn Good! Darn Rare! and oh so gorgeous..

A sleeper that has been snoozing away in a few of England’s more complete Soul 45 collections… now Mark Loyd… You Tube fames awaits you…

How brave can you get, grading a Motown striped as MINT!

As you can probably tell from the label scans, we doubt this 45 has received more than a couple of plays, there is not the merest blemish to be seen.

To acquire 45’s from the beginning of Motown in the “Striped” series in Mint condition is more than impossible. This offering from the sassy Mable John is as fine a copy that I’ve ever come across.

Those of you seeking Motown perfection in their collection, this is as close as you could ever dream of getting.. Or maybe your an R&B orientated DJ who is pulled in by this snarling presence.
