The Tripps

Here Come Those Heartaches / Give It Back

Los Angles based The Tripps (note the two PP’s)

Having noted that point, here’s a record that has undeservedly lived in the shadows of the group’s Northern Soul great on Soundville for too long. In 2017 this disc is no easy find, but still complete with the insanely rare authentic original “titled” sleeve it is a completeness that few have witnessed.

So click the soundfile to hear two contrasting, but equally fascinating Northern Soul winners.

We lead with a slice of Beat Ballad Heaven, as a impassioned lead vocal, unashamedly rolls out his despair, cradled by a shrill girl-group chorus that never misses a line, enriching the session every step of the way.

REAL-DEAL SOUL of the quality we passed by in the 70’s in favour of the Motownesque stomper to gyrate to.. today, as I slowly mature, this superior-stroller does more for me, than any upbeat dancer, you care to mention..

But wait, let’s flip it over.. Motown’s future employee Al Cleveland coincidentally wrote both sides.. and sure enough “Give It Back” shimmers with Motown qualities, including an impressive instrumental break. an upbeat, feelgood classic style Northern Soul dancer that has yet to have received any significant Northern Soul turntable exposure..

I’ve just added a copy, minus that ultra-rare sleeve. into my DJ box, for the “Heartaches” side.. with “Feed Your Soul” Sunday sessions in Newark in mind.. a perfect foil for Tommy Tate etc…

Fred Moss

I'll Always Love You /

An Oliver Sain session other two fabulous but contrasting sides..

As rare Sweet Soul fever sweeps over Planet-Rare-Soul, here’s a St. Louis sleeper of immense quality!

An uncredited vocal-gathering enrich Fred Moss’s at ease vocal, embroidered into a subtle Jazzy arrangement, a muted Trumpet lifting it’s atmospheric qualities to another level. A lilting Jazz guitarist adds another dimension, whilst through all this classy ingredients, a shrill male vocal chorus cradles that fluid lead vocal.. Then from nowhere comes girl-group gatecrashes the proceedings with a “anything you can do..” response to the all male creation.

the flip will delight FUNK scholars, with Fred Moss joined by Bernie Hayes & Oliver Sain, no strangers to the FUNK sound. The trio serve up a soup of Wah Wah guitar, Sain-Sax, bass rhythms peppered with chants, squeals, shouts and lots of attitude.

Two worthy sides from the St. Louis neighborhood..drenched in passion.

Jean Stanback

If I Ever Needed Love / I Still Love You

The sleeve and label-art slogan reads -

“The Ultimate In American Soul Music..”

You could also say ” the ultimate in design..”

Dave Godin was not a man to do things by halves..the music in the grooves, indeed is, the “Ultimate In American Soul Music” One side you can dance your ass off to, a MOD-SCENE MONSTER last century. Then flip is over to weep…as Jean Stanback takes you on a convincing journey of suffering.

For the OCD about condition, we doubt we’ll ever encounter a finer example of the abandoned project with honorable intentions, that sadly on survived for six releases. Leaving the dedicated British Soul collector with the formidable task of acquiring all 6.

With such beauty, high quality music, owning all 6 is a vinyl gathering imperative.

# 16 January 1969

Sweet Sixteen!

Blues & Soul January 1969

Full of nostalgia and interesting articles. including Dave Godin’s current rave Jaibi on Kapp and full page centerfold of The Temptations.. making this p[perhaps my favourite of all the early A5 issues.

Who else would have created a mini-Bio, Picture and record review on JAIBI first and most likely only time this powerhouse was ever documented. As eloquent as ever Dave Godin writes about his record of the year ” Record of the year was a outright winner and gave me no headaches deciding. A protegee of Larry Banks, her style & voice are not unlike Bessie Banks. But the real reason I like tis record, is that is original in both form and execution. Pointing a finger towards..what Soul will be in a few years time!”

How perceptive of Mr. Godin as Beat Ballad Heaven is now a genre held in high regard throughout the Soul collecting community.

In addition, there are fabulous vintage record company full page adverts like ACTION, ATLANTIC, TAMLA MOTOWN, MARMALADE and tons of artist pics inc: Lorraine Ellison, Nina Simone, Jaibi, Root & Jenny Jackson, Major Lance, Walter Jackson, Ted Taylor, Oscar Tony Jr., 5 Stairsteps, etc etc. Loads reviews..Top 50 Soul singles..

Taking It Away ( Would Be Breaking My Heart)

It seems like a lifetime since I last had this 45 through my hands. I knew though it was stonkin’ Northern Soul and I couldn’t wait to drop it on the decks. To reaffirm that this group were certainly NOT the “All Right Now” rock guys, but an ensemble from Holland, who belt out perfect Northern Soul from the flipside of this sought after 45.

A well known NS dancer to those collectors who have studied the vast array of British releases during the 60’s that meet the elusive Northern Soul criteria.

This amazing slab of Northern Soul quality, will shock those who are not already familiar with it. It screams “Wigan Casino” it shouts “The Torch” as every ingredient that made a Northern Soul record great, is there in abundance!

Bass guitar lead in, pumping horns, vibes, strong lead vocal, harmonized voices bubbling away in the background, then ear-piercing girl group bursts into action with the choruses!

Listen, prepare yourself for eyebrow raising Proper-Northern-Soul full of breaks, stops, starts and real deal dance beat relentlessly blaring through..

Amazed you will be, but nowhere near as much as when you seen the so very near PERFECT CONDITION snugly hugging it’s birth-sleeve.

A Wigan Casino Anthem, in it’s most wanted clothes in the finest possible condition.

UK DEMO pursuers, this is a Mint minus vinyl, Mint Minus labeled Northern Soul Wiganer that every Soul Boy of the mid-70s dreamed of finding, whilst foraging the local Junk Shops & Market stalls. Again a flipside uncovered by those relentless pioneers of diggin’ up new sounds for All-Nighter spins.

This disc in the 70’s was a dancefloor-congester of real standing, having everything the dancers of the day were seeking; Records fast enough to burn through the “gear” and breaks to “spin” to, and crescendos to hand-clap and back drop to.

PROPER NORTHERN SOUL of it’s time!

Tom Clay

Marry Me / Never Before

Motown scholars of course will need no introduction to this, the beginnings of Motown release from 1959, but local Detroit Radio Station DJ Tom Clay, who of course recorded later on on the Mowest label at the invitation of Berry Gordy.

This 45 underscores the business brain of Berry Gordy who understood the importance for a record company to Radio Station DJ’s as friends as well as artists. So he recorded his own composition with Tom Clay, Gordy’s foresight was validated, as Tom become a very influential Disc Jockey releasing a 45 with him interviewing the Beatles in 1964, again strengthening his local kudos.

The Clay - Gordy relationship grew, but unfortunately this double helping of Doo-Wop 45 died soon after it’s birth. With the flipside “Never Before” growing in reputation as a silky Doo-Wop stroller over the coming decades.

This disc is a fundamental part of MOTOWN’s dawn, that is where the real-demand lies. For us over the years this 45 has been only a “ghost” in our wants. Especially has the very few copies ever to have surfaced, have been in poor condition or worse.

So today we had no hesitation listing this vital part of Motown’s infancy; as this copy is in unrepeatable condition. Flawless vinyl & labels!

If you hope one day to complete the daunting challenge of Motown-45-completion this disc is an essential acquisition, especially in no need to “ever upgrade” condition.

Tina Britt

The Real Thing / Teardrops Fell (every Step Of The Way)

A gloriously eye-catching July 1965 Yellow DEMO!

225 Decca “running time” number stamp that invariably adorns the A-side label is joined by the not so often seen rubber-stamped mailing date of this DEMO 5 July 1965 just two days before the label text informs the receiver of a July 9 1965 release.

We have no way of knowing whether “Johnny” was the sender or the destination but it does appear to have been all done circa July 1965.

This is of course one of Decca’s most inspired decision to unleash some proper Northern Soul on the growing band of UK enthusiasts for Black American Music, with this Valerie Simpson, Nick Ashford (noting the typo with his writer credit as SANFORD, and Joshie Jo Armstead. Undoubtedly the most impressive non-Motown Soul Girl release of 1965. After listening to the hidden gem on the flipside, this really is a double helping of the good stuff.

“Real Thing” has always been a bone-of-contention, with Ed Silvers being credited as the composer on some USA releases. But it was Valerie, NIck & Joshie who get credited with the variations of the song Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, Betty Everett recorded.

After saying all of that, in 1965 Tina Britt was to the British Soul fan a total unknown and sold almost nothing upon release. The silvertop STOCK release is seldom seen, this alluring Yellow Demo is in another league in rarity terms..

Click the sound file for classic style authentic Northern Soul, but do wait for the stunning flipside to wash over you.. then check that label scan.. everything is just irresistible, to my eyes & ears..

Martha And The Vandellas

My Baby Loves Me / Never Leave Your Baby's Side

Red & White fever hits again..

One Martha’s non-hit British release that through the years has become appreciated as one of her finest Northern Soul offerings.

Presented here, completely as it as mailed out for Radio Station play 7/02/66 almost 51 years ago to the day. Astonishingly it ha remained in Record library file # 17724 original sleeve since that day. The umbilical chord of wavy-top orange TMG cover and the dated an numbered record has never been severed.

For those of you TMG foragers who appreciate authentic provenance this Red & White is drenched in it. Vinyl is as you’d expect a flawless Mint - with only the faintest of signs of 1/2 a century of storage and no obvious indication of having hardly any turntable then or since.

A stunner in looks and a drop-dead gorgeous example of Motown Northern Soul Dance from the desk of Ivy Joe Hunter and William “Mickey” Stevenson

Interestingly the flipside features the sadly under-rated writing talents of Robert Lee Dobyne, an artist only fully appreciated decades later, and a rarely seen Motown writer credit.

Ronnie And Robyn

As Long As You Love Me (i'll Stay)

In the search for flawless Northern Soul anthem from the Golden Years, here’s a 45 that is so very hard to acquire in showcase condition!

Before this vocal version had took the Northern Soul scene by a storm. The “Instrumental” “Sidra Theme” had the NS students in dancefloor rapture as it’s brief cover-up title reverberated around the cavernous Whitchurch All-Dayer circa 1973, one of those Demigod DJ’s flaunted his latest acquisitions.

So the “vocal” version was a “NS Hit” the moment the stylus made contact. From that day to this, a Northern Soul anthem that has constantly been hard to acquire..

BUT IN THIS CONDITION in recent times a frustratingly rare 45!

Clyde Allens

That's Alright Part 1 & 2

Clyde’s rarest 45! Far rarer of his two releases on Fats Washington’s R&B dominated label from the streets of L.A. This time Fats ratchets up the production, into crazier in-ya-face R&B dance experience.

Part 1 features a relentless guitar rhythm, which later crashes into an insane Saxophone break. Everything Fats Washington produced wsas take to the nth degree of attitude. This 45 underlines the energy he generated in the studio; A furious foot-to-the-floor R&B stomper, featuring off-the-scale musicianship, hardly taking a breath in their mission of dancefloor destruction!

Flip it over, and they are off again!! This time a straight instrumental, which if this was an Olympic event the whole team would be drugs-tested…

If R&B insanity is your bag, this is as Psychotic as it gets, the saxophonist was probably admitted to a ward for deranged reed blowing..

Totally wild, irresponsible and utterly compelling.. and Dog-Rare!!

Impressions

Ridin' High

The imperative with rare albums is.. CONDITION!! CONDITION!! CONDITION!! The Vinyl, The Labels and maybe, for some, more importantly the cover..

ESPECIALLY this cover - a now an iconic vision of 3 of the world’s greatest Soul voices siting on 3 of the world’s most wanted vintage cars..

Winner also receives a ONE OFF prototype “Riding High” high quality tee shirt that never went into production circa 2007.

RIDINHIGH… what a great title to present Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden & Fred Cash who at the time were right at the top of their game. The 14 tracks on this Chicago conceived album, underline the huge contribution Curtis Mayfield & team made to Soul Music and particually Northern Soul.

This seldom seen STEREO album, gives up an impressive list of non-45 Northern Soul dance offerings which include. 1.Can’t Work No Longer 2. That’s What Mama Say 3. Gotta Get Away 4. Right On Time 5. A Man’s Temptation 6. I Can’t work No Longer

with the remaining 8 tracks shimmering with the tightest, richness male harmonizing the world-of-Soul had to offer.

But this auction offering is not all about the magnificent music the album gives up; it is every much as about the flawless laminated flipback cover, with hardly a blemish. It’s about the original lined inner EMI sleeve. It’s about the vinyl that is so close to Mint minus it hurts; and of course the seldom encountered labels brandishing that STEREO text.

A listing for those of you who appreciate cover-art. “STEREO” rarity; whilst seeking as near perfect as is possible in 2017. This album is by far the finest example we’ve encountered in memory.

Don’t forget the bonus tee-shirt, unique and iconic imagine blazoned on your chest this summer.

Skull Snaps

My Hang Up Is You / It's A New Day

As the decades roll by, records like this double-helping of progressive New York Soul/Funk are becoming so very hard to acquire at this level of condition.

Sam Culley’s desire to move forward with his group’s musical direction, helped create one of the last century most coveted albums. Under the expert guidance of George Kerr & Bert Keyes something very special was about to unfold.

Although no too many collectors in the USA recognized they were in the presence of several Soul-geniuses when the album was released, it consequently flopped and the 45 from that LP achieved even less.

Although it was honored with a brief UK release, but that too fell between the cracks of The Delphonics, Stylistics UK Soul domination. Even Northern Soul activity after it’s deletion could not rescue it’s dire sales..

So no matter which side of the Atlantic you are cratediggin’ for rare Soul vinyl the chances of this falling into your hands in Mint minus condition is but a dream.

Today of course the “It’s A New Day” side is just has highly craved for as the NS classic “My Hang Up Is You”

August Moon

Wasted Years / You're Together Baby

It matters not a jot which side you drop the needle on!! The result is the equivalently inspiring Northern Soul from two contrasting styles..

August Moon apparently not our much loved “Mister Wiggles” the legendary Virginian owner of Sound Of Soul label. But mysterious New York gathering assembled by Gay Jamison (adore her Turntable 45) Eddie & Robert Banks. the mysterious lead voice pours like cream, a silky-seamless flow of regret; enriched by a “Detroit” inspired mid-tempo arrangement, with a catchy vocal-group harmony, knitted skilfully into a vibes & piano peppered Northern Soul stroller, elevated one more time by blaring but subtle horn blows.

BRILLIANT!!!! in the the extreme!

Known ever since I was NS toddler for the “Together” side; a distinctive Northern Soul stomper that takes no prisoners, perfectly fitting the early 70’s amphetamine-fuel nights of The Cats, The Torch, Va Va’s, The Mecca etc. But always wearing a #13 on it’s back never quite getting the consistent start, the instant-impact deserved.

A “Vardy” of Northern Soul that has had to wait for an opportunity to prove itself, and that chance came when it was casually flipped over revealing NS masterpiece piece on the reserve. Now taking to the field of forum discussions and bar-stool vinyl eulogies, of why this addictive Robert Banks guided Big-Apple groove, has yet to regularly play for Northern-Soul-England!

A case clear case, of another stand-out rarity that has suffered over the years from Northern Soul’s paradoxical style changes and it’s own exclusivity…Time to rise up August “Vardy” Moon and become the Northern Soul star you have always had the quality to be..

PS my own copy, has now got # 9 on it’s back, ready for next weeks “Feed Your Soul” Newark.. cant wait to hear it LOUD!!

Leaving the Temptations prior to them breaking “big” maybe Kell regretted..maybe not. But he can be rest assured that his legacy to European Soul fans of his work out Los Angeles will keep his memory and his work alive forever!

Especially for giving the dedicated Northern Soul collector some of the most desirable and challenging NS rarities to chase and lust after.

So check out the resilient Kell on another magnificent Northern Soul dancer crafted by himself and in-house Jeanne Vikki a lady who machine-like d-created some fine recordings for “Class” .

Oh I Need You Yes I Do

No heroes please, as this dancefloor grenade’s pin is about to be pulled..

It seems a lifetime since I’ve had this record for sale. Our data reveals the fabulous Northern Soul stomper has been so elusive for us, we have not listed a copy for over 20 years!!

So you can imagine, my poor pounding heart as I dropped it onto the turntable and the stylus collided with the grooves..not quite remembering exactly how good it was.. I was immediately bolt-upright in my seat, loose jawed, as this Northern Soul fender-bender crashed through-gears of Rare Soul dance, destroying everything in it’s path.

John Ellison’s vocal always demands attention.. but when the intro is a Joe Beard’s bass guitar revving up the rhythm. The unique Ellison vocal-style takes flight on a wave of pulsating drum thwacks, relentlessly enriched by the rest of the gatherings harmonious choruses.

THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL!!! ..real-deal relentless All Nighter incendiary bomb, that certainly has not had it’s touchpaper lit enough times through the years, presumably due to it’s own frustrating rarity and absence from too many DJ boxes…. because this 45 is steeped in ingredient require to take the roof-off of Britain’s best -loved events like Rugby’s Benn Hall …etc.

Consider by most serious 45 collectors as the greatest label for 50s & 60s R&B/Soul with all 3 label designs magnificent label-art makes this a record-label must-try and collect every release.

If you ever decide to go down the rocky-road of Excello completeness you will most likely find “Baby Boy Warren” one of the very last numbers you acquire..

Spyder Turner

I Can't Make It Anymore / Don't Hold Back

Those Northern Soul timeless classic gathers will not need me to say that he PROMO variation, or rarer by 1000’s to 1 against the stock copy release.

In my Top 30 of all time favorite records, Mike Theodore & Dennis Coffey interpretation of Gordon Lightfoot’s lyrics bring Detroit and so much Soul to a song I’m sure Mr. Lightfoot never envisaged.

Dennis Coffey’s “You Gotta Pay The Price” plectrum decorates the opening horns and vibes with the perfect contrast to build an arrangement suitable for such a profound Soul vocal, that Spyder Turner so consummately discharges..

Add those Motor City strings, a burping baritone sax, let them marinate for just over 2 minutes, a masterpiece is ready for the NS turntables. Ron' Na Ersery

It's About Me Vocal / Instrumental

RARE as…

This Californian Soulful stepper currently resides in Soul Sam’s DJ box, so over the coming months here’s a fabulous mid-tempo could end up anywhere..

It certainly has everything that makes rare-soul disc desirable, including obscurity…that artist name, “Ron’ Na Ersery” is a totally new to me. So new, I was sure it was gonna be a guy singing; But no, it sweetly vocalized Soul-girl with a cutting edge to her delivery at just the right moments.

A 1981 D.I.Y. project as “Ron’ Na Ersery” writes the lyrics, you get the feeling from a personal experience. Accompanied by a relentless guitar riff, with a bass guitar and synth driving and elevating the dance arrangement, as “Ron” vocal cuts the air.

GREAT TUNE, then again Soul Sam is always first to hit the button when anything interesting surfaces. Impeccable, eclectic taste, that may waver, hover, then swoop on one genre, then hop to another; keeping the Granddaddy Of Rare Soul “On Top” of his game, with his variations of style, and his ear for a good ‘un, Martin Barnfather’s DJ sets are unparalleled…

This copy has been hidden from my digging for 36 years, so the fact there’s a few surface hairlines causing faint background noise. Does not dismay us too much, we tend to cast aside the “Manship Mint” boast when it’s an auction debutante and Soul Sam’s copy is in the exact same condition…

Play it out, Play it loud and all you hear is that beseeching Sister-vocal wanting to get it on… and the infectious guitar work..beckoning you to dance.

TUNE!!!

Strange Change / Why Do You Want To Leave Me

Deadwax markings suggest, that this Northern Soul anthem, just like some other Philly “Virtue” recordings, “Marva Lee” etc, this 1965 killer from the desk of Jimmy Bishop., Luther Randolf, Johnny Stiles was heading for an ATCO release but somehow got diverted onto ARGO.

I’m sure someone will tell me why, but either way, nothing would have stop this “ahead of it’s time” recording, from becoming a Northern Soul hand-clap inducing classic.

The intro is just perfect for the Northern Soul dancefloor to commit self-combustion on…simplistic piano, perfectly timed snapping fingers and oh what a voice, breaking through before the signature Philadelphia string swirl in appreciation of a girl-group chorus.

THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL..at it’s very best!

A disc that seldom these days breaking surface for sale, and never in this utterly unblemished condition!

Act accordingly NS classics in perfect nick, have become an endangered species! PS Students of the Soulful vocal-group assisted Harmony-strollers, do not overlook the decidedly delicious flipside from the pen of Kenny Gamble… TUNE!

Line And Track

Circa 1967, a limited 200 press by Ernie K. of “Record Hut”, Pittsburg to meet the local demand triggered by yet another inspired “Mad Mike” spin.

Using the original publishers listing “Mirich Music” as the label name, Ernie vocally dispelled any doubts of legality, by using the original “Mirich” imprint. But this is essentially a 2nd. press and presumably a much smaller run than the “Hiback 109” first press from a year earlier.

Our highly-respected Pittsburgh vinyl-correspondent remembers the 1967 press well, and relayed that Ernie at the time, insisted it was all legal and above board. 200 were made and sold, 50 years ago, so as our man-on-ground in Steel City states. “We have no way of knowing what steps Ernie took to re-issue..” this thumpin’ 1966 dance-track that has now enjoys Northern Soul / MOD dancefloor domination all over the UK. There is at this moment no stronger incendiary vinyl-device to set the place on fire - this is it - an undeniable BOMB!!

This copy is flawless, this copy is the 1967 press, (legality maybe misty..)

And I’m sure when you DJ with it, you announce this 45 playing NOW is NOT on the “Hiback Label”. All the dancefloor will stop, boo, heckle then saunter back to their seats.. and never dance again.

But in reality, only Ernie knows, and he pressed it for the same reason as it’s essential for DJ’s in England…. it’s rams the floor, ignites the evening, with relentless charismatic power..

The vinyl starting pistol for a crazed evening of dance..

Man From Soul / I Hope You Find The

Poet and Radio DJ Jimmy Capps’s independent North Carolina Record Company was responsible for one of the era’s most artistic of labels, an eye-catcher for anyone digging for vinyl back in the day.

With the lead title of this 45 “Man From Soul” it certainly was never gonna be a disc you’d ever wistfully flick past.. which underlines firmly that this is one RARE RECORD that seldom surfaces and was never easily found at any part of it’s history.

Arguably the rarest NS 45 on the label, certainly the most desirable as it gives up TWO solid archetype Carolina 60s dance tunes. Bristling with seamless Horns and silky young-man vocals.

Aimed squarely and fairly at the burgeoning Carolina “Soul” market, but like so many on this “vanity” label failed with sales.. with so many JCP rarities to chase, especially for 60 Garage enthusiasts. With the “Embers” ensuring a two pronged attack on the “Carolinas Soul” market.

This copy is MINT - glorious flawless condition of both the labels and the vinyls. Which gives up not one, but two Northern Soul delights with perfect fidelity..

Platters

Washed Ashore ( On A Lonely Island In The Sea)

STORY TIME:

Imagine the scene in the late 90’s, the Ritz Manchester All Nighter, jam packed full of Northern Soul fans, the DJ’s reveling in the atmosphere, but locking horns in a “Tit For Tat” “Dick” waving exercise of who could play up to the billing of … “Rare Of The Rare”

..after the tedium of Frank Wilson, Del Larks, Eddie Parker and the like blaring out. Up stepped a proper DJ who’s name just happens to be “Dick”, he played some impressive rarities too. Then right in the middle of his set dropped the needle on “The Platters - Washed Ashore”. I don’t doubt for a second it would have been a British DEMO after all he was a seasoned collector & DJ with the most impeccable of CV’s.

The place erupted into shoulder to shoulder dancing frenzy, it sounded so darn good! a surprise drop, that shattered the awkward oneupmanship atmosphere that was starting to develop.

His name of course was Richard Searling and it triggered a NS trend of the surprise drop, of a top-drawer oldie you haven’t had enough of. Regardless of value, rarity; making the statement that the ego was not governing your DJ’s choices..

I’ll never forget it, the hallmark of a real-deal DJ reading the mood, acting accordingly not giving a second thought to opinion..

Here is New York’s Musicor attempt to emulate the success Motown was having with the Four Tops, by ultilizing 3 of the Motor City’s most talented; Richard Popcorn Wylie, Tony Hester & Sonny Sanders..

I think Musicor succeeded in their quest to emulate the Four Tops… with this their finest record. But my advice is, do not try and emulate Richard Searling because you will need more than a “Dick” waving collection to surpass our very own “Dick”..

But maybe a Green & white Demo of this “Greatest Of The Greats” recording.. is a good starting point..

Calling / I Need You

what took you so long?

Another slab of vocal-group Northern Soul, that unlike the “Conquistadors” has enjoyed an underground pulse of appreciation for literally decades, as the lucky owners of this obscure Tennessee double-helping of NS dance have chatted in disbelief that such a truly great double-sider, has languished inside the more thorough collections, only receiving a cursory NS play through the yeas

Guess what? as soon as it this serial-killer becomes tough to acquire, it is now enjoying more NS DJ attention in the last12 months that it had in the last 30 years.

More Love, That's What We Need

A fine clean copy of this Northern Soul crowd-pleaser as it’s 1968 British release still inside it’s birth-sleeve.

A treasured copy that only reveals the mildest signs of turntable excursions through the years. This disc was part of a collection from an old MOD who stopped his Soul buying & playing after the Twisted Wheel closed. Moving onto, like a surprising number of “Soulies” did the burgeoning British Prog Rock album collecting.

This shunning of the 45 was reflected in throughout his teenage accumulation, with all discs very clean and still house in their original jackets.

Today this British 45 is by far rarer than the USA press, that most have been playing it from. Old-school collectors will fully appreciate the beauty and the charm of great tune emerging from attic-hibernation..

Booker T. &the Mg's

Green Onions

The springboard single “Green Onions” lit the touch-paper for the MOD scene to explode all over Britain circa 1962, the perfect bridge for the “Modernistic-Jazz” to embrace USA R&B and the embryonic Soul all-niter scene was born.

Spreading all over London, the “IN” thing was the all-night R&B/Soul club with Modern Jazz sowing drowning under the weight of American “Black” music. by 1966 Cal Tjader’s “Soul Sauce” being it’s last stand.. and with two years after Booker T’s intrusion the Twisted Wheel followed The Mojo, Club-A-Go-Go, Nite Owl, laid the foundations or the Northern Soul scene we know today. With The Mar-keys “Last Night” Rufus Thomas - Walking The Dog - The “Memphis Sound” was certainly one of the catalysts for NS birth in the UK.

Even up an coming Jazz entrenched artist like Graham Bond Organ Georgie Fame embraced the R&B sound strengthening the MOD musical movement.

This album is on auction today for all of the things mentioned above. Bu the overriding factor is the ASTONISHING CONDITION.

I personally NEVER seen a copy as perfect as this listing Condition is truly blinding! Just like the day it hit the shops 55 years ago.

The future owner, nor John Manship Records will ever encounter a finer example of a recording we consider the conception of the Northern Soul scene today.

I'll Hold You

For those of you who seek the least seen, weird and wonderful variations of Northern Soul classics, will be purring at the extremely rare 1966 FRENCH release of this perennial Northern Soul classic.

Johnny Curtis & Maggie Bell, a pair of Glaswegians who sing with the soft-snarl that great city marinates you in. Delivering a potent Northern Soul duet, that simultaneously rocked Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes Pier & the much under-rated Yate All Nighter; the torch-bearer for Northern Soul in the South-West of England.

It was a countrywide “NS Monster” and so difficult to obtain until Nev Wherry, Cleethorpes DJ quenched the demand slightly with some copies of the USA Hickory release. That original USA variation turns up occasionally for auction 40 year on..

but the FRENCH DECCA variation… !! that a different story.

I'm So Glad I Found / You Look Over Your Shoulder

An absolute jewel hidden away on a flipside, that has for years been on the lips of Northern Soul collectors, as promises from DJ’s not to ignore such brilliance and bring this scintillating vocal-group dancer to the turntables has so far not quite been fulfilled.

Click the soundfile, it may well trigger a campaign for records of this stature to be aired, rather than the heard 10,000 times top 500.

We don’t think anyone listening to this disc could ever deny, that this tune is every note as impressive as any of Northern Soul’s most popular. The fact that the USA release is not an impossible acquisition (although becoming much harder to capture) but may have prevented the NS DJ’s who thrive on rarity to have overlooked a monumental example of 60’s dance Soul.

But now the turntable webcam captures both the beauty and the true rarity of what is in front of you now. We know the likes of Ginger Taylor, Sean Chapman, Nige Brown etc. Top DJ’s who revel in playing & displaying seriously gorgeous British DEMO’s. You will know doubt be hearing a lot more of this stand-out.

Not to mention the old-school British collector who will having palpitations thinking of ownership. Two flawless Green & White label, hugging a Bell jacket. Vinyl is super nice other than a tiny area of hairline blemishes this 45 would be graded Mint minus, it certainly play that flaw-free grade.

Wondering why this treasure was never an A-side to begin with, just stay with the soundfile “Look Over Your Shoulder” for me, is one of the greatest vocal-group strollers of all time… listen and swoon!

Kelly St. Clair

Hear That Beat

Now here is a rare sight! A former Cleethorpes Pier floor-packer in such untouched condition it retains the impossibly RARE promo picture cover!

circa 1975/76 this irresistible beating girl vocal Northern Soul dancer, along with Holly St. James were the Top-NS-sister sounds of the time. Holly St. James went on the become “immortal” in it’s ability to fill the NS dancefloors of Britain, whilst Kelly St. Clair drifted off into collections and ultimate obscurity!

Just lately I feel I’m always documenting, Rare Soul seclusion for some potent “forgotten” by many 45s, due to their now validated rarity. Had record ever turned up over the decades following it’s mid-70’s debut; I’m left in no doubt, it too, would have hung onto Holly St. James’s petticoat and also seen been a major part of the Northern Soul revival that exploded so unexpectedly.

We are again underlining how there does need to be just a few copies with influential DJ boxes for a renaissance to take place..

For me hearing Kelly again rockets me back those halcyon days when “Poke” debuted Rain - Out Of My Mind - and The Pier Girl-Sound was KING!!

A more perfect example of days gone by, and times never to be repeated, would be hard to find… those winners that you seldom hear, but used to be on your faves list…really do spark a unique vinyl-emotion.

Love Me Love You / Take Me With You

Every week we attempt to list records that represent the diversity of Rare Soul DJ & collectors scene, whilst also enlightening the less obvious tune, worthy of your attention.

This listing ticks all the boxes to demand your scrutiny, as not for the first time Kaplan Kaye conjures up a atmospheric rare-soul 70s dance-delight, that everyone failed to notice back in 1973. Little wonder really, this subtle mid-tempo Jazzy-Soul was not in vogue but it is NOW!!

So much so this 45 over the decades has gathered a huge underground following, so much so, it is a record, that few talk about just in case the “cat gets out of the bag” that there is a 1973 British production saturated in class!

Not just one side, but both sides give up, a perfect “Soulful-Stepper” even though it was conceived in Watford, is almost unbelievable. As the Girl / Boy duo glide through two Jazzy/Soul arrangements that will leave you wondering which side is the best..

Two top-quality tunes, that will become today’s and tomorrow’s earworm…

Saundra Mallett & The Vandellas

The Camel Walk / It's Gonna Be Hard Times

1962 non-starter, now a beyond Rare Motown trophy.

Born out of a delay of consolidating the Del-Fi’s as Martha backing group to kick start her career with the “Vandellas” (just renamed by Martha Reeves, dividing “Van” Dyke Street, her childhood street & “Della” Reese, Martha’s fave female singer.)

At the starting point the 3 Del-Phis Rosalind Ashford, Annette Beard and Gloria Jean Williamson were brought back together at Mickey Stevenson’s PA’s request Martha Reeves, as Martha was about to embark on her fledgling Motown recording career. The transition from Mickey Stevenson’s office to stage and studio was not a smooth one.

On this recording, a hasty attempt to hook into the dance-craze sensation. Marha was not around as Berry Gordy called for the “Vandellas” as backing for new girl on the block, Saundra Mallett and the session took place without “Martha”, it was a flop, becoming an instant quickly forgotten, but a rarity that later caused conflict of opinion and much debate on why & how, Saundra got the lead, even though Martha had just named and formed “The Vandellas”.

One thing that is fact, is this is one darn hard 45 to find, especially in clean condition. Saundra of course went on the join previously all male group “The Downbeats” to form “The Elgins” providing a sweeter edge to the harmonies, that gained them smash hits like “Darlin’ Baby” “Heaven Must Have Sent You” with Saundra now (Edwards) seamless voice featuring heavily.

This hurried bringing together of the Vandellas with Saundra on lead was never to happen again. It left # 54067 as one of the most talked about and ultimately challenging Motown 45s to acquire.

Maybe, if Mr. Gordy had lead the truly wonderful flipside harmony ballad “It’s Gonna Be Hard Times”. Martha Reeves & the Elgins story would have been totally different… but that’s another deliberation.

Do not pass by, this historical rarity seldom comes to market…

Something In Your Smile

One of Britain’s rarest Northern Soul creations, from the pen of T. C. Curtis? and the studio console of the gifted Mike Smith. So RARE information on this 45 is not easy to validate.

The impressive edgy lead vocal certainly carries Soul as it attacks the 70s string assisted dance production. The shrill girl-group chorus borrows the rifts from Vickie Sue Robinson’s “Turn Te Beat Around”, enriched by the ingenious Mike Smith’s insistence for cramming crashing cymbals, a bank of strings and a subtle saxophone, a fool proof backdrop for the T. C. Curtis sounding “Black” vocal onslaught.

If this had just been discovered on a USA indie I’d expect, no demanding a 4 figure sum for. In contradiction, this is a 1979 British indie release with provenance of long-standing real-rarity that few USA indie releases can guarantee.

Take a listen, prepare to be impressed, also prepare for this 45 to stay in your memory as sightings are few and far between.
