Cut You Lose / Soul Street

I recently heard Colin Law drop the needle on this Juggernaut. It TOOK THE ROOF OFF THE PLACE.. ! Unstoppable, stampeding slab of real-deal Northern Soul from the Chicago neighborhood.

Mel London takes another look at his 1963 writing & production on AGE 29118 and thinks this baby, if perfect for a revamp, rewiring and reconstruction of what was already a rebellious ingot of R&B.

Mel 3 years later, goes on an improvement mission, and what a result he & assistant Jack Spratt achieves. As they employ big brass artillery and chichi squealing ladies to construct what is without question one of the most-powerful Chicago dance tunes ever made..

Mr. Law what a great drop and I was looking for a copy ever since.. fortunately mine is now at the front of my DJ box, and ain’t going anywhere. Records of this calibre just don’t turn up every day..

Booker T. & The Mg's

Red Bean And Rice / Be My Lady

A MOD anthem in it’s rarest form.

Covered so successfully by Brain Auger & His Trinity with the 1967 UK Marmalade 598003 release also being held in very high regard. Having said that nothing pulls you in quite like a Yellow Atlantic British Demo as Decca made certain these Promo’s got the attention they deserved when the mail was opened..

Hammond fans, listen to the skilled digits of Booker T. Jones as he massages the keyboard to the point of ejaculation; assisted by Steve Cropper & Donald Duck Dun wielding their guitar artistry, punctuating the organ flow.

A way ahead of it’s time instrumental that sits today as a MOD anthem, and as a 1965 UK Yellow DEMO an highly prize collectors piece.

Vinyl plays perfectly, there area few superficial mild marks but nothing that effects the stylus. Labels as you can see are flawless, except for Decca rubber-stamped running time of 2.30.

Junior Wells

Snatch It Back & Hold It

Killer Chicago R&B on it’s insanely rare 1965 British EP release.

This DJ friendly 7” offers up this impressive R&B dancer as the first track on side two, in loudly cut high fidelity sound. Click the soundfile and set free one of Juniors finest offerings to the rare Soul dance scene.

You could of course try for the slightly easier “Hoodoo Man Blues” 1965 UK Album if you don’t mind dragging around low-fi albums to DJ with. But if you want this compellingly relentless floor-shaker sitting snugly in your DJ box, this is the only way to do it.

Go on Junior blow ‘em all away, with a Bluesy mover with few comparable counterparts.Superior mover, driven by a relentless guitar picking, a growling harmonica accompanying the street-worn vocal of the Mighty Junior.

Avid British vinyl collectors please note, that this 1965 UK press is not only Dog-Rare, it also comes housed in a neatly presented laminated flipback cover offering 3 other impressive examples of Chicago Blues, from a man who has provided quite a few dancefloor-detonators to the NS faithful.

Other tracks are: 1. Hoo-Doo Man Blues 2. Early In The Morning 3. Snatch it Back & Hold It 4. Ships On The Ocean

Norris Vines And The Luvlines

Give In

Rare Soulful Northern Soul Crossover at it’s most moving!

Flawless and still in birth sleeve is this 1977 Canadian only PROMO. Of this superior Soulful dancer with a huge reputation, gained from exclusive exposure at the world’s most discerning events. Soul Essence, Just Soul, etc. etc.

Zippy strings melt into the dreamy horns, the perfect introduction to a beseeching from the heart vocal. Norris’s delivery just full of emotion, but retaining a seamless flow, enriched by his versatile male-backing group who serve up an impressive Doo-Wop style Bass interlude, followed by sweet soul driven harmony choruses, cradling that phenomenal vopice.

Classy, does not go anywhere near to describing this session, as Jazzy riffs gatecrash, to taking the recording to yet another level..

Big Guys

Hang My Head And Cry / Mr. Cupid (don't You Call On Me)

Something’s stirring in a few high-profile DJ boxes, a gentle rumbling, as murmurs of how darn good this 45 is, are starting to get noticed. This top-quality vocal group Northern Soul dance experience has slept for far too long.

New Jersey collaborates with New York’s relentless production team as “Bright Tunes” again show their prowess for crafting uplifting Soul Music; as they consistently did girl group “The Chiffons”. But this time it a mysterious male gathering that catches the ear, silky smooth delivery with lyrics from some-time Northern Soul provider “Keith Ruffin” of Carnival & Smoke Records fame. Whether he is part of those seamless vocals on this dancer, we are not certain, but he could possibly be.

Listen and melt as The Big Guys do-it-up perfectly, you’ll hear why a few have started to drop the needle on this utterly infectious stroller, already.

Flip it over, you will not be disappointed with The Chiffons chief-providers as “Phil Margo, Mitch Margo use all their experience with vocal group harmony as “The Tokens” crafting an fine NS soul group screamer..aided as always by Jay Siegal & Henry Medress.

Some highly talented people met to forge this 1967 winner.. that as we noted at the beginning has overslept, it’s stirring people..a stretch, a yawn and this winner will be entering your life..

With Robert Thomas’s version, currently rattling the walls of every Northern Soul club every weekend.

We thought, a finely crafted alternative “Sister” take would suit the DJ that likes ‘em rare and decidedly different.

So why follow the crowd…?

Huge tune for “Butch” of course..

Come Go With Me C/w How Do You Tell An Angel

The fraudulent 70s counterfeit has littered the Northern Soul scene for decades, with hardly ever even a glimpse of the genuine original press.

But her’s a copy, in stunning condition in it’s company sleeve, sporting smooth finish label, sharp solid silver text and all the correct matrix markings in the deadwax.

One of, if not THE greatest girl vocal Northern Soul experience you could ever wish to dance to as the oh so seldom-seen ORIGINAL !

Albert Washington

I'm The Man / These Arms Of Mine

Visiting to a Lincolnshire village fete, will never be the same. Because last month I found this UK Trophy on a street stall in remoteness of Castle Bytham.

Don’t get me wrong this was no bargain find, I knew that when I picked it out of a box and asked “How Much?” and the sharp reply was “Manship, ain’t never even seen one of them”

I had to buy it after that comment, didn’t I. Ouch! That Manship bloke has a few things to answer for “Price Guides” un’all. But no way, was I gonna leave this eye-popping DEMO, in an “American Werewolf In London” isolated village , not going home without it and I needed to get out of there before the sun set.

I did escape alive, without becoming the main attraction in some local fertility ritual, there were too many local folk carrying bundles of sticks for my liking. Although much poorer, I was delighted with my find a UK Trophy in the weirdest of circumstances; so very unexpected.

A 1968 DEMO Sunday find that has given me many hours of self-satisfaction since.. I got a feeling the same level of pleasure will be experienced by who ever wins this head-turner or indeed those who dance to an unparalleled surge of R&B Northern Soul if a DJ becomes the proud owner.

A few light surface blemish on the vinyl - but plays perfectly. Both labels are flaw-free as you can see.

Lee Mckinney & The Magnetics

I'll Keep Holding On / Jackie Baby (can You Doit)

What a huge privilege to be able to offer this remarkable example of Chicago street-level group harmony Northern Soul for auction today.

Few recordings open up your mind and soul leaving you overwhelmed like this ghostly flowing strolling dance groove does. Only the very most-haunting productions can achieve that effect.

Wanna hear a production build from a mere trickle into a rolling tsumai of soulfulness..Richard Evans creates just that…..as he brandishes his almost super-natural skills twisting, elevating the flow with tight harmonies, then when least expected, an electrifying burst of a soaring girl vocal choir, mingle with the beautifully under-stated horns.

Truly moving…

These are the skills that took him to the top at Cadet Records, as his wicked ways were ultized steering the likes of Ramsey Lewis’s & Marlena Shaw to stand-out recordings, making him their preferred arranger.

Straight from the neighborhood, drenched in commoradary, togetherness and friendship, making this one of the tighest small label productions ever constructed.

Flip it over and it’s Go-Go Cool Jerk style Northern Soul, that makes you realize just how ahead of it’s time “Holding On” is, as it glides to a crescendo and gloriousness!

This is Nortern Soul at it’s most-accomplished and indeed it’s rarest. In fact total Brilliance by ever member in the studio that day…

VInyl is play graded as it has some mild surface marks.. as you can hear both sides play totally clean ..you’ll find it impossible not to listen again

Brenda Holloway

A Favor For A Girl / When I'm Gone

Every other country in the world could only have hope to hear Brenda Holloway at her exquisite best from the ownership of this lady’s “Every Little Bit Hurts” Album

But Argentina recognized this track, as one of Los Angeles Angel’s very finest recordings. Releasing it on the flipside of “When I’m Gone” the 1965 33RPM 7”.

Why Motown in Detroit didn’t acknowledge this Billy Brown and Clarence Paul collaboration as a must hear for the American public is something of a mystery. Listen to this highly accomplished songstress serve lyrics with beautifully moving twists and turns in her voice, divine!

For me, this is Brenda at her best, it is certainly her rarest 7” recording and totally fabulous Northern Soul.

Vinyl is still house in it’s Argentine house-sleeve, has some light surface marks but as you can hear both sides flow, loud and clean.

This is Northern Soul Motown collecting at its most-challenging

James Fountain

Seven Day Lover

Back in 1974 some over enthusiastic young aspiring Cleethorpes DJ, allegedly paid £170 to become the owner of this Northern Soul prize!

I do dispute that piece of NS folklore, as no cash changed hands, it was all trades. The fact that just one record within the toppling vinyl tower was “Billy Harner’s - What About the Music - instrumetal on UK Kama Sutra and all the other 40 / 50 45 were very collectable NS classics.. I believe that legendary £170 would today be valued at nearer £20,000.

I should have know better, the scene’s-sharks hooked into my desperation to own my favourite Northern Soul current spin, that I needed the punters of The Pier to experience.

Imagine when “Seven Day Lover” was reissued by Manchester based “Cream Records” only 3 weeks later.. my first experience of Northern Soul “insider dealing” crushed me.

The charismatic Dave Withers on the “This England Wigan Casino” TV documentary told of how, the buyer was not brokenhearted because he still had the genuine original press.. . Dave I was suicidal.. and still weep inside at what was in that trading deal.

Anyhow, putting my grief to one side for a fleeting moment. Here is small window of opportunity to own this legendary disc, at far less than the “body-parts” that I gave up for ownership.

Both labels & vinyls are flawless and I was very tempted to keep it, but I don’t want to live with a constant reminder of my glaring naivety.

Andy Fisher & The Encores

My Heart's Beating Stronger / A Wee Bit Longer

So utterly delicious Soulful Stroller from Los Angeles..influenced by Andy Fishers time served with New Orleans group “THe Barons”

On this session Cliff Goldstein & Arthur Wright are at the controls, a collaboration that so often sets the standard for Los Angeles 60’s Soul. We have grown to expect something special from this pairing, but when that work is done with members from New Orleans premier Soul Group “The Barons” then you just know something “special” would emerge from this days work.

Andy himself teams up with prolific Capitol lyricist Lester “House Next Door” Carr to craft a mid-tempo groove that matches up to, such magnificent NS floaters as Buddy Smith, Chuck Holiday, Lee McKinney and the like. A rich atmospheric session with few equals… as Andrew Fishers seasoned gravel-coated vocal is softly cradled by “the Encores” who most like have been former members of The Barons also.

Flip it over Mr. Fisher and Barons team mate George Bonney write the lyrics for a bold brass driven Northern Soul stomper - again enriched by slick vocal-group backing and Goldsmith boosted blaring horns! Terrific stuff! Two awesome examples of perhaps a “moonlighting” session, crafting a pair of Northern Soul belters sitting here in that standard of condition you’ve always dreamed of owning…

Clyde Allens

That's Alright Part 1 & 2

R&B fans hang on to your hats.. !

Clyde Allens is gonna take you on one crazy journey into the Ghetto R&B of Los Angeles with Fats Washington at the wheel anything can happen!

Clyde’s follow up release on the same label “Lil Sister” is a well regarded slab of California R&B enjoying a strong following but is no where near as rare as his first 45 for “Fats”

Click the soundfile and unleash an uncompromising R&B Stomper with Fats Washington’s band furiously pumping away in the background and a delinquent Saxophonist breaking all the rules and doing totally his own thing, pushing all aside whilst lifting this recording from a thumpin’ dancer into an utterly insane one.. as his Saxie Russell final blow pulls Clyde’s vocal back into the fray..

MONSTER R&B recording, but then again this is what “Fats” did.. ne rocked every joint, every studio, every dancehall he ever appear in.

This session captured forever on vinyl…if you have the strength have a listen to te instrumental flip.. that really needs calming down to 40 rpm for a real-ripping instrumental floor-destroyer with that Sax-Man really letting lose..

It just don’t get any more in-ya-face than this imposing R&B bomb!

Vinyl is close to Mint minus with one mild scuff not affecting play, both labels are perfect.

Dave Hall

Look At Me

I’ve not seen or heard this Detroit rarity is quite some time, so imagine my delight when I recently dropped the needle on it and it sounds massively better than I ever remember it.

The record engineering skills of Johnny Powers had already paid dividends with the “Sound” label’s only creditable hit with The Capreez. Now Mr. Powers guides the mysterious Dave Hall through a seriously captivating Motor City mid-tempo which takes you straight into “Beat Ballad Heaven!”

From the very first single note “Doorbell” ring, it glides into Motor City mode, Softly caressed horns are knitted together by Angelic sweet girl choruses, encouraging Mr. Hall to sink to his knees with pleading with ever despairing words…

I recently sold my over exposured Buddy Smith on the strength that this neglected masterpiece would be an equal replacement..for that soulfully beseeching part of my DJ set.

Strong words? I think one listen will confirm “Look At Me” has those same heart-stirring lyrics that build into a gut-twisting dance-experience..

We predict in the right hands, this will return and conquer the void Buddy left..

Some light surface blemishes - plays a inspirational clean and true.

No One There / (i've Given You ) The Best Years Of My Life

Hey John, did you know this is the 7th. copy of TMG 843 you’ve sold this week..?

That was Stella’s observation one day, years and years ago, as she was pulling orders..Oh I thought there must be something going on with that disc. Better get the price adjusted to match the demand,

“how may we got left?” was my first question, expecting a reply of near 20. I knew I had accumulated a bundle of them over the years.

But those dreaded words of “NONE” “THIS IS THE LAST COPY” charged into my despairing ears. The last thing a record dealer ever wants to hear “so I suppose £8 was too cheap”. Those stealthy Northern Soul locusts had gilded in unnoticed and hijacked my lowly priced mistake… and stripped us bare.

Yep when this 45 “Took Off” it did so, without me noticing.. and the sharper NS collector laid us bare..

Before you today is the Green & White DEMO of that most-popular Northern Soul Anthem and thankfully we never had a copy of this when it was launched by some enterprising Jock north of here.

It became an instant NS Monster and is still sparking the Dance-Floor-Dash today..

Gotta be the only-way-to-own-it, a beautiful thing isn’t it…

Leno Philips

Confusion / Beautiful World

I was torn between which side to lead with, on this pre-Disco era double helping from the vibrant early 70s Miami Soul scene.

Two Willie’s are better than one!

As Willie “Beaver” Hale & Willie Clarke team up with Philip Wright to construct two real winners, that instantly become ear-worms of the day. We shall lead with the more in-vogue side spiced up with the FUNKIER production.

“Confusion” bristles to the sound of a skillfully plucked guitar.. then that highly pitched vocal buries itself right into the heart of the rhythm with a classy soulful Leno-wailings. This is a seamless Jazz / Soul fusion dripping with emotion..

On the other side, Leno gets upbeat, cheerfully delivering Miami-dance 1972 style, again benefiting from conspicuous guitar skills, as his penetrating vocal pierces the air on a raft of rhythm. Breezing in and making the listener feel that so much better..

Two great sides on one record, making this another one of those Miami “impossibles” that make this collecting of 70’s Soulful dance, so tantalizingly satisfying…

Hank And Rover

A Lot To Be Done

The irresistible lure of the Okeh PROMO, this time offers up stunning Deep Soul duet - a European cult item that sparked a horrid bootleg to meet the demand from the Dutch Deep Soul extremists.

The busy office in Jackson, Mississippi occupied by brothers Clifton & Eddie Tomas with Bob McCree always on hand, spawned so many fabulous “Soul” recordings covering all genres and released on a mountain of labels. As this determined trio spread their licencing talents far and wide.

There is very little known of their identity of Hank and Rover on this their lone 45 release. What we do know is Hank & Rover were the perfect foil for each others imploring vocals, as they send the message “There’s a Lot To Be Done” before we can be “free”. The beseeching vocal driven by a simplistic guitar and piano arrangement with timely horns & shrill girls punctuating the proceedings..

These vocals are special, perfectly timed & delivered.. leaving us at the end wondering just who Hank & Rover actually were as they lifted their pitch to falsetto at the end, just superb.

Benice Swanson

Lying Awake / Baby I'm Yours

Our century long, sales data categorically reveals of all the UK Northern Soul black Chess 45’s. This golden beauty is the rarest, we too are amazed, this is our first STOCK copy this century.

Single release artist Benice Swanson was a head-turning blonde making ripples as a movie blonde bombshell starlet. Something of a Marilyn Monroe hopeful and when you listen to those sultry tones enticing you in, you can understand why. She did have all the credentials, including the voice.

A few ear-grabbing guitar plucks, Don Paul & Kenny Paul’s writings come to life as the provocative Benice purrs the lyrics.. then BOOM! crashing drums, full bank of strings and a fabulous girly Northern Soul tunes hits the air.

The USA press is no easy find, the UK PROMO release is absurdly easier to find that this disc of “gold”.

This is a crucial 45 for those many old-school soul-boys running the labels.. Sue, Stateside, Tamla Motown, Chess etc. I’m sure that dedicated band of vinyl-addicts, will confirm this is a frustrating void in the British Chess run.

and this copy is a spectacular MINT - in every way..

Johnny Sayles

I Can't Get Enouigh / Hold On Own Baby

Those “Catacombs Club” Blues & Soul adverts that captivated the young British Soul-Boy in the early 70s, with claims of spinning, the then unheard of tunes of Richard Temple, Mamie Galore, Dynamics, Cigarette Ashes, Johnny Sayles etc. Drew in “Crews” from all over England.

Even prompting envious snide comments like “Richard Temple” doesn’t exist as The Catacombs is on “Temple Street” etc. Those adverts did ruffle a few outside DJ’s feathers. But the Clubbers would treat “The Cats” as their Saturday night shrine!

I can remember the first time I heard “Johnny Sayles” being totally ignorant of his cool UK Liberty release “Anything For You” I had never heard of him; I’d also never experienced a vocal quiet like it. A Goose-pimple-inducing snarl matching the power of a Monk Higgins kitchen-sink production.

Silky Hargraves

Love, Let's Try It Again / I'll Keep On Trying

The head-turning labels are matched by the eye-popping vinyl condition. But overshadowed by the two almighty William Garrett productions stamped into one stand-out disc.

It matters not a jot which side you dropped the arm on, as both will send shivers up your spine, transporting you back to mid-60s Detroit; into the very heart of those who dared to ignore all the “Motown” influences swamping the Motor City at the time.

This Detroit masterpiece was a shot-across-the-Bows of New York’s Brill Building’s domination of the full orchestra Beat Ballad. As if that warning-blast wasn’t enough Mr. Garrett gives New York the old one-two, with a flipside that”ll also knock you dead, as the sax-God joins the proceedings with subtle precisely-timed baritone-trumps, authenticating the city of origin.

Mid-tempo Motor City 60s Soul does NOT get any better than this - and you get it full- not once but TWICE over.

We repeat condition could hardly be better and indeed the two songs couldn’t either!

Little Oscar

Empty Bottles

In memory of Joe Torquay and his essential Saturday afternoons with best-buddy Lawrence Preston, as the Welsh Northern Soul boys got together for a vinyl critique of each others offerings..

Northern Soul is not just a dancehall thing or a club on a weekend experience. It can also be a few beers in, playing records with mates and building up lifelong friendships.. maybe by the end of the day, surrounded by “Empty Bottles” and warming yourself upon mutual “Huge Respect” and good music.

Sadly Joe left us unexpectedly recently, he was an orphan who was transported from Torquay to his adoptive Mother in Wrexham at the age of 15. That was rather lucky for Joe, as within a very short time he had hooked up with the neighborhood Soul-Gang and became a regular at Manchester’s Twisted Wheel.

When he died, the local council announced Joe had left “no family”. But unknowing to Wrexham’s Jobs-worths; Joe belonged to a massive family, “The Northern Soul” family which was validated by the throng of “Family” that attended the graveside, on a torrential pouring wet Friday for his emotional farewell.

This is in remembrance of Joe Torquay, and his pal Lawrence who spent Saturday afternoons together spinning records like this.. a top-fave of Lawrence he tells me..

NOTING; This copy is MINT! still sitting inside it’s birth-sleeve. again NOTING the other very few copies I’ve encountered over the decades have been OFF-CENTER, this listing is perfectly centered and flawless..

Four Tracks

Like My Love For You / Voodoo Man

The insatiable machine of Northern Soul vinyl-devourers didn’t take long to swallow up the “find” of this sensational vocal-group NS creation.

The whole-lot have long since disappeared and this beauty is on the way back up, with a queue of serious collectors still unable to boast ownership. With now an estimated 100,000+ Northern Soul collectors it is no surprise demand for this top-drawer tune has no wavered one little bit over the last decade.

The A-side of course is saturated in class. Real-deal premiership harmony Northern Soul at it’s finest, a hugely popular dancerfloor-detonator for more years than we care to remember. Real-Class never fades..

But in more recent times it’s the dropping of the flipside “Voodoo Man” that has rekindled frantic demand, as the grittier delivered side is becoming just as requested as the timeless.

Not too often does a top-flight 45 offer two fabulous sides on one disc. This one being one of the very best in that rather exclusive DBL club.

Condition is just perfect !

Soul Communicaters

Those Lonely Nights / Please Don't Go

Drop the needle - stand back - the bar to floor stampede is about to begin!

The most perfect Northern Soul creation to ever emerge from that fruitful city of Pittsburgh. Son of The Steel City, Chuck Corby leads his friends into a soulful delight that belies his Italian roots, as he supremely sings killer Northern Soul delivering Doo Wop/Soul like he was born to it.

Signed as a teenager to Joe Averbach’s iconic Fee Bee label. Chuck bristling with all the influences of the Del Vikings, El Capris, 5 Playboys bestowed upon him was an instant “find”

Top side is total Killer Northern Soul, A Monster in it’s own right. But to appreciate Chuck Corby at his utmost brilliant, listen to the flipside, as he gives up one of the most moving Soul vocal performances you could ever wish to encounter.

Forget the record.. get this guy over here to a weekender, I was informed by one of the greatest critics of Doo Wop the sadly missed Jerry Braverman that Mr. Corby is utterly sensational in the flesh. “Please Don ‘t Go” just validates that statement; as my minds-eye envisages him singing this tune.. to 3,000 British Soul fans… AWESOME.

So carried away with the music - I forgot to mention the condition is impeccable, a mild light blemish on the a-side run-in, otherwise MINT!

Alice Clark

Alice Clark

A legendary album, from a Sister who know exactly who to make herself noticed. Sister Soul singing at it’s most spectacular.

This is of course the authentic original first press. Note the ring 15.00mm in from the perimeter of the richly coloured label, unmistakably the first press living inside the 1.8mm thick gatefold card sleeve.

No mistaking - this is the highly coveted and annoyingly elusive real-deal.

Seldom does an album get decorated with such quality and never having singles released from it. Only Baby Washington’s Veep album is comparable. This LP also has top quality rare soul dance hiding in almost every groove..

Take a listen to.

  1. Don’t You Care

  2. Hard Hard Promises

  3. Never Did I Stop Loving You

  4. Hey Girl

then ask would you be elated to have such brilliance at your fingertips, with this iconic album close to your turntable..

Eddie & Ernie

I Can't Do It (i Just Can't Leave You) / Lost Friends

another beautiful “Bluesman’s” flawless reject

For the white demo Northern Soul classic 45 stalker, he will be willing to pursue to the end if those addictive labels are perfect, on this listing the vinyl is “as new” also.

Before you today is the winter of 1966 Los Angeles press of this highly regarded Northern Soul veteran, which was a floor-pleaser with its distinctive harp stroked intro.

Eddie & Ernie were a Soul partnership made in Heaven with Eddie Campbell & Ernie Johnson playing verbal-volleyball better than any other male duo of their time. Not to mention the poetic lyrical prowess ,which made them the most widely traveled guys in Soul. Phoenix, New York, California coast to coast artists at the top-of-their-game, performing, writing and releasing records in all four corners of the Union .

Underlined with the Campbell / Johnson Deep Soul masterpiece hidden away on the flipside of an inventive Northern Soul dance production.. Two outstanding tunes offered here in it’s most gratifying format. WHITE/MINT and irresistible.

Jack Montgomery

Don't Turn Your Back On Me / Never In A Million Years

Listen and swoon!

This is Northern Soul at it’s dreamiest!

Delivered by one of the most-conclusive vocals Detroit had to offer. The under-recording Marvin Jones guided by the shrewd Don Mancha, never one to overlook a real talent; as he pulls in two of Detroit top arrangers to polish this strolling Soul outing, adding a blend mystique and despair; Jack has the ideal vocal to deliver Don Mancha’s somber lyrics.

The Dennis Coffey & Mike Theodore ingenious arrangement includes subtly shrill Sisters wailing the chorus, whilst seemingly floating aloft over a bed of strings, low blow horns and a haunting piccolo knitting to concept together.

Marvin Jones had one of the richest vocals ever to record Soul, but sadly just like his Chicago counterpart Walter Jackson his remarkable voice ceased to be heard, as he died at the tender age of 40.

Every Soul fan, would just adore to have heard more… this is arguably his finest moment. Offered here today as a totally flawless copy.

Not forgetting (like I did) the slick archetypal Motor City instrumental on the flipside, which many aficionados like just as much..

Mel Smith & The Nite Riders

Chicken Backs / Love Is Gone

Seriously RARE Connecticut R&B / Popcorn shaker.

Migrating north from Philly, this gathering of Soul Men made Hartford, Connecticut their home. Gaining a strong local following as a must-see live act. Melvin Smith was the snarling lead vocalist on this 1964 recording, on a street-level two release only, local label.

This man knew how to deliver the lyrics, just as the Nite Riders knew how to subtly back up a vocalist as the group whip up a controlled storm of 60s’s dance, leaving that wicked vocal as the main feature.

This rarity is currently enjoying enviable British turntable action from those few exclusive Jocks lucky enough to own a copy. Infectious R&B groove that grows into a tune you just can’t ignore.. the tinkling keyboard work is in total contrast to the growling tones of Mel Smith’s vocal as the bass plucks away at the dance rhythm, you can’t help but move.

From the streets and I love it! Raw, naive and absolutely unmissable for today’s UK club scene.

The vinyl is neat, clean and plays perfectly. The “Courtesy” dark green label has had some h2o stains over the years (see scans), as this is likely to be the only copy you will ever see, in the flesh.

You Don't Even Know My Name

Silly Rare !

Smooth as silk, seamless Robert Holmes session. A man who has contributed more than most to the rare Northern Soul scene from his Nashville base; with countless 45’s bearing his credits, a name that virtually guarantees quality on so many different 60’s labels. Robert Holmes must be regarded as one of Northern Soul great producers.

With this vocal-group harmony example, being his most-wanted. Blessed with that essential “Glide” for easy-peazy Northern Soul dance, to immerse yourself in. Always a crowd pleaser, but certainly not a collectors pleaser as this an annoying elusive rarity to find.. so elusive it’s been a FULL 15 years since we last sold it..

I was astonished with that fact, but over the years we have seen less Bell examples than the “Southern Artists”.

We have no hesitation today in nominating this Bell 45 into the Northern Soul “Rarest OF THE RARE” category.

Vinyl has a few mild blemishes but as you can hear, none affect play.

Something Keeps Calling Me Back / Come On Home

For those forum spokesman, devoid of retailing skills. We may have to repeat MANSHIP AUCTIONS are not only about value of the listing.

Every week we try and make the auction, informative, interesting to read, colourful and widely affordable to as many of near 20,000 members as it is possible. So here is this week’s.. Northern Soul classic oddity for consideration.

1966 Philippine PROMO of Wayne’s finest Northern Soul offering, with a different flipside to other issues worldwide. In comparison, you don’t see the USA MGM Demo very often, do we?

But in this astonishing attire we think it is and stop and think twice offering. RARE in the extreme, interesting to the point of discussion, and a listing for those of you dedicated to acquiring the NS classics in their rarest, weirdest form.
